a clip from the movie crossroads portraying Ralph Macchio (the karate kid) playing a badass guitar solo. Info from IMDB.com "Though the blues guitar sounds aren't truly coming from Ralph Macchio's fingers, the actor is actually playing note for note the music of Steve Vai and Ry Cooder. His fingering, slides and bends are precise until the "main" solo, which incorporates Paganini's 5th Caprice, in which it is obvious he is not fingering the correct location on the guitar, as well with the patterns, this can be seen since he uses mainly the same pattern (scale on the top frets, then another one in the bottom frets) and all the scale portion of it, the scales are shifting and changing sound, but his patterns remain the same." and "Steve Vai played both sides of the guitar duel, while acting as Jack Butler, the devil's guitarist. Ry Cooder recorded the slide parts and produced the soundtrack."

Bingo. Nobody's solos hit me like Gilmore's.

Comfortably Numb jumped right up to me. But, I really enjoyed his solo work on "The Final Cut" also.

The song The Fletcher Memorial Home by Pink Floyd off of their CD The Final Cut. Circa 1983, remastered 2004. I do not own any of this content. Sorry, it's just this picture. Volume increased 20%. Get CD here: http://www.amazon.com/Final-Cut-Pink-Floyd/dp/B0001KZM3O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1229910774&sr=1-1 Lyrics: Take all your overgrown infants away somewhere And build them a home, a little place of their own. The Fletcher Memorial Home for Incurable Tyrants and Kings. And they can appear to themselves every day On closed circuit T.V. To make sure they're still real. It's the only connection they feel. "Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome, Reagan and Haig, Mr. Begin and friend, Mrs. Thatcher, and Paisly, "Hello Maggie!" Mr. Brezhnev and party. "Scusi dov'è il bar?" The ghost of McCarthy, The memories of Nixon. "Who's the bald chap?" "Good-bye!" And now, adding colour, a group of anonymous latin- American meat packing glitterati. Did they expect us to treat them with any respect? They can polish their medals and sharpen their Smiles, and amuse themselves playing games for awhile. Boom boom, bang bang, lie down you're dead. Safe in the permanent gaze of a cold glass eye With their favorite toys They'll be good girls and boys In the Fletcher Memorial Home for colonial Wasters of life and limb. Is everyone in? Are you having a nice time? Now the final solution can be applied.

  • Although I favor the improvised jam band stuff, to me the most memorable and melodic solos belong to David Gilmour. Just throw on the solo to Shine On You Crazy Diamond right now, and try not to marvel at it. So note perfect. No big splashy moves. Sonic art. Or the acoustic solo on Wish You Were Here. It's like someone is singing it. Just blows me away. But also love me some Time and Comfortably numb as such pure rock beauty. He tops the list for me of all album rock guitarists, by a pretty wide margin.

And here's one you might not have heard: Trey Anastasio on the song Horn. Very Gilmore like. Restrained but builds and pays real attention to notes and technique.

  • FranK Zappa on "Hungry Freaks, Daddy," - two short tasty blasts totally devoid of bombast. A guitartist I have rediscovered lately is Gary Quackenbush of SRC and particularly his solo on "Onesimpletask" - raw, jagged and emotional. And speaking of Michigan guitarists, Fred Smith and Wayne Kramer exchanging licks on "Looking At You" - both on the early A-square single on which their guitars sound like barely contained rocket engines and on the later version from the "Back In The USA" album in which Chuck Berry inspired riffs are perfectly framed by thin extended sheets of feedback.

It's the mellow outro with the slight delay that makes that solo for me. The pinch harmonics in the beginning and the shredding in the middle are great, but the outro completes it.
