Best route from Lansing to Traverse City?

  • klm said...

When you leave has much more impact than which route you take. We have family in northern Michigan. The delays and stress of a Friday drive are not worth watching a Friday evening sunset up north. Get up early on Saturday, grab a donut and a cup of coffee, and sail to wherever you are going. Catch the sunrise instead.

    Right.

Great idea. What time do you have to start driving early Saturday morning so you can catch the sunrise in northern Michigan?

  • I actually watch the sunrise on my way up. It's very relaxing.

Keep your eyes on the road.

And...no posting on tRCMB while driving!!!

  • The real pros go on Thursday night, and then wake up early on Monday morning (on a non-Memorial Weekend) and drive home.

Not everyone can take off Friday to go up north. Also, driving 3 hours home and then going to work on Monday sounds awful.

    Step 3: Hike.

I've done that before here in DC on my way back from Ocean City, MD. Get up, shower and put on the work clothes at the hotel, check out and do the drive to my office. It's really not that bad.

Wait, that sounds terrible. You can't take Friday off? That makes me want to have a beer.....

Route 1 is your quickest option. Watch out for speed traps on 115.

I swear, 75% of the drivers on m115 follow this plan:

    - Drive ~ 54-57mph while it's one lane
    - Speed up to 70mph during the passing lanes so you can't get around them
    - Slow back down when the passing lane ends; repeat

My favorite is when they pass you at the passing lanes - slow down directly after the passing lane - stop to turn left when there is a line of cars coming in the opposite direction.

I've made that drive probably 1000 times. Out of those options, option 1 is best.

But where in TC are you going? If you're heading toward the Resort side/Acme, then option 3 is the best. You're only on I75 for like 5 miles.

I usually was headed right for the middle of town. So a variation of option 1 would be:

    US-10
    M-115
    US-131
    M-113
Turn right on Garfield Rd in Kingsley.

All of those times you've listed are about 1 hour longer than it actually takes.

The route through grayling / kalkaska is the quickest if you're going to the east bay. My family lives in acme so that's the route I took prob 100s times

Keep your eyes on the road.

Why? There's no one else around.

Observing the detritus from the previous evening helps to pass the time. The broken down cars, boat trailers with flat tires, coolers and luggage with their contents strewn along the highway. The tales of woe that accompany these sights I can only imagine.

  • I like the guy that gets pissed that he's eight cars deep in a caravan going about 50 mph and decides to pass everyone just as a semi comes rolling around a curve right at him. Keeps me entertained during the drive.

Plus you get to spend another night up north (without packing up the car and fighting traffic on the way home...which is ALWAYS worse than the drive up).

Yeah. I heard AAA doesn't work on Friday nights.

Yes, that's what I tried to convey. While TC isn't the biggest place, it has grown quite a bit and there is no easy route. It all depends on which side of town you are headed.

    Incorrect. They work.

    Eventually.

Meanwhile, you get to watch the sunset from the edge of the highway as everyone who passes you thinks "It sucks to be you."

    I know, right?

It would be much better for those people to have their cars break down on Saturday morning.
