Bicyclers in vehicle lanes

  • Phil McCrackin said...

I see motorists roll through stop signs and run red lights every day.

Right. And they do it with the exact same frequency as cyclists, right? Just stop. 99% of cyclists in major cities never stop for red lights or stop signs.

Recently I have noticed that road cyclists are merging into vehicle lanes, especially at intersections. Not on the side of the road, in the lanes. The other day one was right behind me in the lane where I was making a big left turn at a major intersection. Dude acted like he was on a motorcycle. I am not anti bicycler, I have mountain bike myself. I get it, I'm down. But when did they start doing this all the sudden? Just like that? Thats how its going to be from now on?

It's so we don't get murdered by you on your cell phone and your giant cage on wheels.

There is no other situation on earth where one civilian can kill another civilian and get off scott free.

Oh I don't know about that. It's very possible someone on the Spartan D may kill Shoelaces this fall.

When some road rager or texting teenager runs you over I'm not gonna feel bad at all.

Car vs. bike, the car will win every single collision, every single time, no matter what you think your rights are.

Exactly. That's why taking the lane is safe for a cyclist to do at an intersection.

The anti-bike idiots in this thread are incredibly short sighted.

  • Nuts, as our resident two wheeled expert, can you please explain why cyclists feel they get to weave all the way up front at a traffic back up and blow through red lights and stop signs, yet still feel entitled to all the other rules of the road?

I'm 100% cool with giving them all kinds of leeway on the road. But seeing them ignore so many other rules pisses me off to no end. They all want to have their cake and eat it too.

    Mmmmmm, delicious, delicious cake.

Yeah, i only get frustrated when they blow through lights and stop signs. I came to a four way stop and went to turn left...cyclist came flying through his stop sign and he would have splattered all over the side of my car if tWife hadn't yelled at me to stop.

I have no problems with cyclists using lanes of traffic like they're supposed to (meaning following the laws of traffic). Here in Cincinnati it is illegal to ride your bike on the sidewalk if you are older than 15.

Motorists disobey the rules of the road all the time, it pisses me off to no end. A pedestrian was hit on my block a few weeks ago by some jack hole in an SUV who ran a stop sign. The person is lucky to be alive after that, and the driver never even stopped.

I don't use the negative experiences I've had with motorists to assume that 99% of them all drive like that though.

  • When bicyclists pay what I do for vehicle registration and license I will (maybe) give them some room on the road.

I would guess that most cyclists also own cars and pay the same taxes that you do.

I'm sorry, but you are totally and completely missing the point in my opinion. Yes, the occasional motorist runs a light or stop sign. But virtually every single cyclist bores through intersections. In Philly, I'd put my life on it that virtually every single cyclist does not come to a stop at stop signs or red lights.

You're taking a few examples of motorists not coming to a complete stop or running a light and trying to justify every single cyclist not having to observe red lights or stop signs.

Two wrongs do not make a right.

Just sack up and say you don't think cyclists should have to stop at red lights or stop signs.

Why will no cyclists in this thread admit that it is a problem with cyclists refusing to stop at stop signs and red lights? It's a problem, and it's the fault of cyclists. Stop making excuses about motorists instead of actually answering my questions.

It is the American way, I am in a car and you on a little bike. If we hit you are going to get hurt, not me. So just get out of my way.explode

This whole thing has bothered me quite a bit. I wish bikers would USE THE GOD DAMN SIDE WALK WHEREVER POSSIBLE!!!! They are more of nuisance to drivers than they are to pedestrians.

    Jesus Christ. NO.

You people CLEARLY do not live in major cities. Cyclists on a sidewalk are a severe danger to pedestrians on the sideWALK. And sidewalks in suburbia are not usually safe or convenient for cyclists.

Cyclists belong on the road. And they need to follow the RULES of the road.

I'm not justifying anything, just pointing out that the focus is always on the idiots, and most people don't notice the cyclists that aren't a problem.

Wrong. Thankfully this is illegal in most places too.

Bike around the pedestrians, find a trail, just get off the road. Have any of you ever been ticketed for biking on a sidewalk?

Living in a major city, I'm always aware of cyclists because I know of the issue and I ride from time to time myself.

But see, here's the thing - a cyclist screwing up is just as dangerous as a motorist screwing up. Because the end result is still the same - a two ton object hitting a very small object. I get that cyclists are angry about drivers that run a red light to beat it (as someone who runs in a city, I've had multiple close calls and was actually hit once by someone trying to beat a light) or otherwise don't pay attention.

But what about the cyclist that goes on the inside when I have my right turn blinker on and then gets shitty with me when I almost hit them because they try to pass me on the right? What about the cyclists (and in my experience in Philly, it really and truly is almost all) that absolutely refuse to stop at stop signs and red lights and expect motorists to just stay out of their way? I almost creamed a guy in a bike that blew through a stop sign at 20+ MPH. He started screaming at me like I was the asshole when he absolutely sailed through an intersection.

Cyclists tend to put all the blame on motorists. That just simply isn't the case. I get that it's far more catastrophic for the cyclist in the case of an accident. But that also means that cyclists should be just as aware as motorists. Cyclists should not get any special consideration or treatment. They should be very aware of the inherent risks they are taking on the road.

And once again, why will no cyclists answer my question about the utter refusal by cyclists to stop at red lights and stop signs and the constant weaving to the front of back ups?

  • This argument pops up every couple months and it really boils down to this:

Bikers, you're harder to see, usually unexpected, slow as hell, and sometimes unpredictable, and if a car touches you in any way, you're hitting the pavement and we're getting our asses sued. You're a burden on every single motorist and motorists will always despise you because you make them nervous and their commute more difficult.

Then, I assume many of you went to MSU? Bikers are a damn plague on campus. I pretty quickly was forced to adopt the habit of having to look over my shoulder any time i wanted to turn or take a step to the side when walking down the sidewalk or risk getting run the fuck over by lance armstrong. I must have seen about 20 bike/pedestrian collisions in my time at MSU. I mean, shit, I have been clipped from behind several times when just walking straight! You're all terrible and I hate you.

  • First of all I bicycle about 300 miles a year April-0ct.but I use common sense.

We know it is legal to ride a bike in the streets!!
    When it is DARK....or RAINING...or FOGGY...or SNOWING...or 10 DEGREES.
WHEN IT IS TOTALLY UNEXPECTED BY MOTORISTS.
I have a right..I am not polluting..I am reducing traffic..and obeying the law!
I am doing something good for my health..and I enjoy it!!
and then the crash happens.....He is dead or a quadraplegic!!
Now it is no longer about I.
His childrens tears and sobs show they miss their daddy so much.
His wife cannot go to work, cannot see the bills thru her tears.
His parents try to help, but they border on depression.
and his relatives?? his friends?? They look for him..but he is not there.
    THE GUY WHO HIT HIM???
His life is changed forever....his children and wife will suffer forever
and so will his parents and friends and relatives....FOREVER!!!
So much unnecessary suffering....because of .....It's all about ME attitude

Is it really all about YOU??
epitaph..."I had no common sense".............ME... even unto death.

False. Cars pulling in/out of driveways, alleys and approaching intersections are not looking for bikes on sidewalks. Riding a bike on a sidewalk is way more dangerous than riding in the road.

    WRONG

  • Its even more annoying when in a smaller city (E.L.) you see a guy riding his bike in the middle of the road holding up traffic, when there is a clear sidewalk right next to him. Get on the SIDEWALK!!! dummies will cry about it to if they get hit.
