Big 12\SEC form alliance. Champions meet in bowl game.

  • Checkmate Big East and ACC.

SEC, Big 12 champions will play in bowl if both miss playoff

Five-year agreement will start in 2014 to coincide with implementation of the new postseason model to decide a national champion.

Why is it a checkmate to the Big East and ACC?

This will only happen if neither the SEC or Big 12 champs dont make the top 4, which will probably never happen.

Once the 4 game playoff format is revealed, the major conferences need to grab the major bowls and leave out ND. That will force them into a conference.

  • People are going to care even less about the "major" bowls once the playoff is started. Orange bowl: who gives a shit? Cap One bowl: yawn. The public has already started to show that they don't care about meaningless games, that will only increase now that there will 3 meaningful games.

  • "A new January bowl tradition is born," SEC Commissioner Mike Slive in a statement. "This new game will provide a great matchup between the two most successful conferences in the BCS era and will complement the exciting postseason atmosphere created by the new four-team model. Most importantly, it will provide our student-athletes, coaches and fans with an outstanding bowl experience."

How can you create a bowl tradition for a game that may only be played once every 5 years?

Which will lead to more and more teams in a playoff. Nobody wants to go to a consolation game, but a quarterfinal would be great.

    1. Bleast/ACC will rarely make the playoff
    2. B10/P10 champ/runner-up occupy Rose
    3. SEC/B12 champ/runner-up occupy Sugar
    4. Orange & Fiesta scramble for remaining B10/SEC/P10/B12 matchups, which are far more desirable than anything the Bleast/ACC can offer.
    5. Bleast/ACC on outside looking in
    6. Difference between "haves" & "have nots" re: bowl revenue increases. Road to "super conferences" continues.

I'll just throw out a random prediction of this falls out with some of the major bowls:

    4-team playoff

    Rose Bowl- Big Ten/Pac-12: Duh
Sugar Bowl- Becomes the "new" SEC/Big 12 partnership bowl

Here's where it gets a little trickier...

Fiesta Bowl- left without an anchor conference, it wants the best matchup available. Big East? lol ACC? lolPac-12? Definite geographic fit and it's a solid conference. Second tie-in? Pac-12 "partnership" + Great relationship with Fiesta Bowl committee + programs with great following and tradition = B1G tie-in. We have Pac-12 vs. B1G. There's also the Capital One Bowl stadium issue for the B1G that factors into this.

Orange Bowl- The SEC, tired of waiting for the Capital One Bowl to improve their stadium, happily bolts for Miami. SEC's opponent? I'll go out on a limb here and say they keep the ACC tie-in.

    Cotton Bowl- stays SEC/Big-12.

Capital One Bowl- Sorry C1B, your dilapidating stadium finally bites you in the ass in the New World Order of college football. You lose your B1G/SEC tie-ins. As a consolation prize, you get the ACC #2. Their matchup? I'll go with the Big East Champion which will likely be Boise State every damn year.

    In summary:

Rose: Pac-12 Champion vs. B1G Champion
Sugar: SEC Champion vs. Big 12 Champion
    Fiesta: B1G #2 vs. Pac-12 #2
Orange: SEC #2 vs. ACC Champion
Cotton: SEC #3 or #4 vs. Big 12 #2 (basically the status quo here)
Capital One: Big East Champion vs. ACC #2
    Four-team playoff

The game will be played every year.If one of the SEC or BIG12 champs is in the MNC the runner-up will play in the bowl.So good bye ACC and hello FSU and Clemnson to the Big 12.The game is gonna be bid out to the highest bidder to televise.Money will be spread out among the conf. members.

  • The thing I find interesting about this is the $$$. Under the BCS, the 6 major conferences were guaranteed one $17 million payout. A second BCS berth from any conference only got them an additional $4.5 million. If the ACC/Bleast are regularly shutout of the playoff, I think they are looking at a significant payout reduction every year.

Couple this with their lower TV deals, and over time a significant gap should emerge between the "Big 4" & the "Little 2" conferences. The lesser bowls are also likely to pay more for B10/P12/B12/SEC than ACC/Bleast teams. They might even pay more to one than the other for the same game. shrug

The P12 & B12 should be on their knees giving thanks that tB10 & SEC have agreed to hook up with them.

Regardless, I think the B1G ends up with a tie-in in the Orange or Fiesta...my guess at this point is the Fiesta.

I'll pray for Orange Bowl since I live here. I think folks here are overestimating people's willingness to travel to AZ. The cost difference is significant compared to FL. Also, there's the recruiting angle. B10 schools benefit much more from FL bowls than West coast bowls IMHO. How many SE kids on B10 rosters vs. West coast kids?

  • There's a lot of hubris coming from Big 12/SEC country about how this bowl will surpass the Rose Bowl. Sorry SEC/Big 12 fans, but you just can't manufacture a competitor for Pasadena, San Gabriel Mountains, the Rose Bowl, Pac-12/B1G, the Rose Parade and NINETY-EIGHT YEARS OF HISTORY AND TRADITION. The Rose Bowl is synonymous with New Year's Day and it is going to take a lot more than a new manufactured bowl to surpass the Rose Bowl.

It's not just traveling fans. You also have to take into account local B1G alumni.

Believe me, I would have zero problem with the B1G getting an Orange Bowl tie-in. I'm just looking at things the way they are falling. The Orange Bowl can still have an ACC anchor. The Fiesta Bowl is looking at being left high and dry...possibly the Sugar Bowl too but I bet the SEC keeps a tie-in there as well regardless of where this new Champions Bowl takes place.

I believe there are more B10 alumni in FL than any other state outside of the B10 footprint.

The Orange Bowl's original anchor was tB8 (now the B12).

The only thing that matters is the payout. I presume the Rose will bring it strong in this department. I bet Jerry World or tSugar Bowl will too.
