Big Ten - 1 overrated/1 underrated

  • DilMeister269 said...

Again, I can't call them underrated anymore after years of this "Look out for Purdue" crap. Hell, even the OP pointed this out. I've seen too many writers/bloggers claim Purdue could surprise people for me to call them "underrated". They'll go 5-7, maybe 6-6, beat another MAC team in their bowl game, then people associated with the B1G will once again wonder if Purdue is due for a "break-out year". Enough's enough already

What are all these outlets picking Purdue as underrated? Just curious.

Numerous people on the tRCMB have claimed Purdue is a sleeper, Briant Bennet/Adam Rittenberg from ESPN have expressed similar mindsets, and I remember seeing an article on the BTN website but I'm sorry to say I don't remember who wrote it

  • Ever since the end of last season, all I've been hearing on tRCMB is that Purdue will miraculously rise up and compete with Ohio State in the Leaders. I don't see it.

Both my rags (Lindy's and Phil Steele) pick Purdue to finish 4th in their division.

I've been consistently unimpressed with Danny Hope, and while he's had to deal with a spat of injuries, I think he's in over his head, a la Tim Brewster.

    Just consider a couple things:

    1) I already said a team like Iowa is a good pick, but that I wanted to go out on a limb a little bit. I haven't seen this huge uprising of support for Purdue that allegedly exists. By your own admission two major college football publications picked them to finish fourth. I really don't care what some random podunk final four u type blog says.

    2) It's not like I'm picking Purdue to go to the Rose Bowl. I think Wisconsin is the clear favorite to win the Leaders division. The fact I think Purdue *might* contend for second place in their division isn't THAT insane.

This is the make or break year for Hope. If he doesn't put it all together, I think he gets the axe.

That's where we differ, I'd put money on Hope being fired after this season

  • Dude, did you walk in on Danny Hope boning your sister or something? I could very well be wrong about Purdue, it's just a prediction.

Wasn't poo-pooing your pick or addressing you specifically, but simply noting that it's been trendy on this board the past year to pick Purdue as the sleeper.

  • Underrated- Purdue simply because i can't think of any other team. I think iowa is going to be sub par this season. I guess i could go with northwestern but I don't see them competing for the division that much. Another choice in Minnesota but I still believe they are a year or two away from making a big impact. That is, if Jerry Kill can stay healthy.

Overrated- Toss-up between Michigan and Ohio State. The general feel I get from the media is that Ohio State would win the conference if not for probation. I just don't buy that. An entire team adjusting to a new system takes time to work out kinks and I have seen nothing from Braxton Miller that shows me he will be successful at OSU. That being said there defense will be pretty good. I honestly see the ceiling for Michigan 8-4 this year. And that is if they stay healthy like last year. I wouldn't be that surprised if they didn't make a bowl game this year if they lose linemen to injury. Frankly, at least from on the offense, I don't see them improving at all as long as they have Denard at QB. He prevent their entire offense from moving forward to a more pro style and improving as a unit.

Definitely this. I wouldn't mind all the Purdue speculation (I'm mostly referring to ESPN) if they gave actual reasons for their coming resurgence. But mostly they just seem to be picking the name by default because Wisky's replacing a QB, PSU's a shambles, and OSU's ineligible. I suspect another 7-5 (4-4) season is probably their ceiling. Bet the farm on them blowing a terrible nonconference game, too.

Well, Purdue has 2 of the Big 10's best at their respective positions in Short(DT) and Allen(CB). Either one can change a game almost by themselves. They host WI and PSU, not to mention Michigan. Their cross-divisional opponents are UM, Minny and Iowa. That's not a murder's row.

Also, Wisky, probably the #1 team in that division, has to play MSU and @Nebraska. WI could go 1-2 vs. the Legends while Purdue goes 2-1 or even 3-0.

A few lucky bounces and I could see Purdue at 9-3 (6-2) and in the CCG.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

    SpartanRocky

  • UM and OSU as a whole is obvious, but that's every year.

    I'm going to go Rush/Roh.

What in the world are you basing the "Either one can change a game almost by themselves" comment on? Again, here are the points per game Purdue's defenses under Coach Hope have given up against FBS competition...

    2009 - 29.08
    2010 - 29.45
    2011 - 29.08 Again

Where is this supposed improvement? I mean, they had Ryan Kerrigan during the 2009/2010 seasons and they still sucked, so why should I believe it'll be any different this year?

  • Everybody forgets that with one of the worst offenses in the country, Penn State went 9-3 last year and 6-2 in Conference play. They lost Devon Still but we all know damn well somebody can replace the impact he made on that D line, they do it every single year. I think if the new coach can make the offense play effectively, they can contend in that division. It's a three team race between Wiscy Purdue and PSU, and PSU doesn't have to play us.
