Big Ten, Jim Delany routed by SEC (complete w/ Civil War ref.)

  • "At least Grant let Lee's men keep their horses after Appomattox. Delany was picked so clean by SEC boss Mike Slive he probably needed to borrow a horse to ride home in shame on."

Big Ten, Jim Delany routed by SEC in college football playoff maneuvering

The Big Ten Commissioner got very little of what he wanted in the negotiations that led to the proposed four-team playoff.

  • Not only did the SEC gang bang Delany...Notre Dame got in on it and made it a b*****.

The SEC has been the smartest in the room this entire time.

  • The Sugar and Fiesta Bowls are as corrupt as the $EC. I would have loved to see a 4 team playoff after the bowls but money talks and the Rose Bowl/Big Ten/PacTen didn't stand a chance.

sure will...but that just goes to show that the Rose Bowl doesn't really matter to how well the B1G does.

The Rose Bowl has never had to be greasy and play the games/bribes/politics the other major bowls have seen.

I remember when the Rose Bowl has had teams outside the B1G and Pac10/12. Empty seats

How so? The B1G didn't get ANYTHING it was asking for heading into this. Not even the Rose is protected. We went from being a conference that almost always got 2 BCS bids to being a conference that dating back to 1998 would have only had 8 or so teams in a 4-team playoff.

9 of the past 14 seasons, there wouldn't have even been a B1G team involved in a four team playoff.

SEC still favored in (past) four-team playoffs - College Football Nation Blog - ESPN

Now that we are really getting closer to a playoff in college football, we here at the SEC blog thought it would be interesting to take a look at past

That's the talk of a disgruntled fan...bottom line is that Delany was taken to the wood shed by the SEC because their commissioner is smarter and better.

  • The south can have their way. It's all they have. Outside of Florida and New Orleans what else is there to do down there? Talk football, inbreed, wave their confederate flags, talk how good they have it compared to us 'Yankee' states up north, and Jeff Foxworthy circa 1997. Just listen to the Finebaum show on XM radio if you think otherwise.

I was on a cruise with a bunch of people from the south, and I wouldn't care to associate myself with a bunch of hillbillies ever again.

  • I'd rather have a playoff. Step up and win games.

  • Delany shining through for us again. lol

  • I think Delany really screwed up when he didn't insist that the 4 team playoff should include the 4 conference champions. He should have aligned with the PAC12 on that issue. I think that should have been his TOP priority.

Having the conference champs in the playoffs would eliminate any bias from voters. I really think that the SEC and the south in general really have the leverage with poll voters and they will be sure to get the benefit of any doubt when it comes to getting teams into the playoffs.

I think that's a valid point. The bowl games haven't been the same or meant as much to me for a long time. Delany shouldn't have made the bowls an issue. He should have focused on making sure no conference had an advantage of another.

So true, but for some reason no matter how many times you give the facts there are people arguing that this is a good thing. Hell no it's not, this hurts MSU, get it knuckleheads? It's now easy to see a scenario where we win the BTC and get left out of the BCS final 4 AND the Rose Bowl. Awesome.

Why on earth would the b10 Presidents agree to this? It will surely result in a massive decline in $.

Delany was right. Academics do matter. Tradition and the regular season matter. The Rose Bowl matters. He had logic and facts on his side and no one listened.
The SEC is bad for college sports. I think money ruled. Delany got what he deserved. If we didn't know he was a clown after the Gholston matter we know it now.

This is what I don't get, the B10 and Pac10 could have insisted on conference champs and the SEC would have no choice.

I have to wonder if the SEC said they would bolt from the NCAA and play NAIA schools OOC. The B1G and Pac12 had to agree to keep the FBS alive.

  • The curent system is so rigged against us anyways this has to be an improvement. I'm fine with a system in which people are held accountable, you know their names, and there is transparency in the process. Being in the Rose is not the end all, be all if the goals are bigger and like it or not the SEC has the more intellectually honest position. It may favor them now but it may not in the future. It should be the top 4.

Sadly I think that's what would have happened...a splintered college football world with some schools/conferences separating from the NCAA and operating (even more) by their own set of rules.
