Big announcement at WMU?

  • I like that they are building more Med schools..it opens the door for more competition and it puts the Carribean and other foreign countries out of business.

Not really too many schools. The country is facing a shortage which will only be greatly raised if Obamacare isn't reversed. Along with the disincentives of becoming a Dr. under Obamacare, many individual states have not taken measures to limit frivolous malpractice lawsuits, so some states are/will be hit harder than ever due to outrageous malpractice insurance rates.

Med school is not the new law school because we actually need more Dr's and we have an excess of lawyers right now. Just talk to some of the recent law school grads- too few jobs for too many lawyers.

Let me guess...you learned these "facts" while watching Fox News?

Look for MSU to get a boat load of new donations.

There was a real fear among those in Kalamazoo that with the Pfizier evaporation Kalamazoo was going to suffer with GR being the beneficiary of so many "Medical Mile" related donations from DeVos, VanAndel, Meijer and Sechia families. Sechia spearheading the MSU Medical School move to GR scared the hell out of Kalmazoo planners.

    They have answered back.

Perhaps that would have been a good idea.

I'm curious if there's even really room in the state for another medical school. The number is residency programs is limited and I had thought that with the expansion of both MSU medical schools they were pretty much at the limit.

The most accurate thing said in this entire thread. They can build a hundred medical schools, but unless more residency slots are created, it won't have the desired effect on physician supply.

My question is how many med schools is too many? We already have UM, MSU and now Oakland is building a school on the corner of Squirrel and University.

That is a weird place to build one...

What is that, a Titleist? A hole in one...

medical school is the new law school.

This. I seriously hope not though since you can usually check up on lawyers before you hire them and make sure they know what they're doing, but that's not really the case with doctors. Can you imagine being operated on by a doctor that went to the Cooley version of med school? scared

Well there are a ton of Carribean doctors..I see your point. But there is just not enough doctors in the field.

Upjohn money I see. Pfzier money is guilt money as they continue to leave town.

Its a new medical school to counter MSU's Medical School moving to GR and to announce earlier than CMU where there has been talk about a new medical school. That cuts CMU's off at the pass.

I would never send a child to WMU. They have whipsawed students with eliminating programs with little warning due to poor budget planning. A new medical school, along with a PA program and nursing will give them the only school in the state offering all three. Downside is a Medical school can gobbled up $100 million pretty quick (staffing isn't cheap) and it will bleed resources from other WMU programs.

Actually CMU's school is further along than WMU's. CMU has a dean in place already (I should know as he's my uncle) and have faculty lined up.

WMU has just begun the search process.

that's not going to happen, law schools sprung up to meet the huge demand of people that wanted to go to law school. Medical schools are highly regulated and keep schools at a low number even when demand is always high. There are easy law schools, there is no such thing as an easy med school (and residency) for a reason.

WMU has a dean in place as well.

Do you know how CMU is funding the medical school? I don't recall hearing any funding donations or initiatives.

Has CMU lined up $100 million in start up costs yet? If not naming the dean is the comparitively cheap part.

Well a simple search of CMU's med school site shows they're building a $24MM building, and do have fund raising campaigns going. So they've obviously got money. Now I didn't see anything about $100MM donation but they don't seem to be doing too bad.

(Also, from what I gather, CMU is focusing more on Mid-Michigan and Northern Michigan, which is probably there isn't as much press south of the I-96 Corridor.)

Well according to this video, their Fundraising Goal is $25 mm. Not really sure how you can build a medical school with only $25 mm, but I digress

  • IMHO it sounds like WMU is just trying to keep up and go step for step with the other big Universities in the state. They seem to be the little brother who wants to do the things his bigger siblings do but doesn't do them well. WMU needs to just know its place, both academically and athletically.

nope, born and raised in Kalamazoo. been here for almost 30 years now. Married to a WMU alum. I've been thinking this about Western for years.

They currently have a building they tore down without having the money to replace it.

their dorms are shit, they keep taking away parking for signs and novelties, they are full of frivolous spending then bitch about less state funding without cutting the budget.

But they spend as fast as possible for athletics that can't fill half the seats, I could go on and on.

They don't have the money to replace it because the State reneged and gave them 1/4 of the money they were suppose to.

The dorms are shit, but what college doesn't have crappy dorms? The dorms at WMU are the same as MSU.

The parking lot thing was under the previous President, who by all accounts, set the University back numerous years because she was incompetent.

I don't understand your last part about spending fast for athletics? Football is almost always in the top 3 of the MAC for attendance (not saying much, but they draw well for their league), basketball hasn't drawn well since 2005 (but they're still upper tier for MAC), and hockey sold out almost half their games this year
