Bourbon Appreciation Thread

  • Interesting night, had to babysit a drunk friend. Just got home, and poured myself a glass of Jack Daniels Single Barrel. Nothing like ending a night with some good bourbon. I'm partial to Basil Hayden's, but I'm certainly not complaining about what's in front of me. Happy holidays everyone.

  • I had a Christmas party last Saturday called "Bourbon and Bowties" at my house. Everyone dressed up formal and there was quite a bit of top shelf bourbon drinking. It was a blast. Now there is a lot of "left over" bourbon at the house. Bonus.

    Jack isn't bourbon.

  • I just recently purchased my first bottle of bourbon (I don't know what took so long) and went with Maker's Mark 46. I must say it is awfully good ... nice and smooth. I have also heard that Santa is putting a bottle of Basil Hayden under the tree, and since Hayden is my last name, I look forward to getting together with a long lost relative every soon.

  • Making a line of bourbon for/through Michigan States distillery as we speak
Come to Mi Brewing Co and see it, I'd be happy to share some baby bourbon with you while we wait about a half-dozen more years for it to become grown-up bourbon...
    Cheers!

    P.s. - I go Woodfordthumbsup

  • You will enjoy your Basil Hayden's. I'm partial to Irish whiskey, but that should be obvious. Woodford is good, too. Had some Jefferson's Reserve this past summer. That was pretty good, too.

Lots of good choices out there.

  • I'm giving my brother one of these for Christmas. Spartan version of Makers Mark! The other two have been consumed already. One went on the road trip from East Lansing to Penn State and the other was consumed at my Christmas party. I'll probably refill one of them for my house.

Thank God you didn't put the 'e' in there.

    Laphroaig for me.

  • A friend of ours soaked maraschino cherries in bourbon for about a month, then made chocolate covered cherries with them --- whoa! A bit strong for my tastes

It won't be bourbon and you won't be able to call it that commercially

    According to Wikipedia,

On May 4, 1964, the United States Congress recognized Bourbon Whiskey as a "distinctive product of the United States." The Federal Standards of Identity for Distilled Spirits (27 C.F.R. 5.22) state that bourbon must meet these requirements:

    * Bourbon must be made of a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn (maize).[1]
    * Bourbon must be distilled to no more than 160 (U.S.) proof (80% alcohol by volume).
    * Neither coloring nor flavoring may be added.
    * Bourbon must be aged in new, charred oak barrels.[1]
    * Bourbon must be entered into the barrel at no more than 125 proof (62.5% alcohol by volume).
    * Bourbon, like other whiskeys, must be bottled at not less than 80 proof (40% alcohol by volume.)
    * Bourbon that meets the above requirements and has been aged for a minimum of two years may (but is not required to) be called Straight Bourbon.[2]
    * Straight Bourbon aged for a period less than four years must be labeled with the duration of its aging.
    * If an age is stated on the label, it must be the age of the youngest whiskey in the bottle.
    * Only whiskey produced in the United States can be called bourbon.[3]

So yes, they will be able to call it that. Also, I was wrong in starting the thread in the first place because, as someone pointed out, Jack isn't bourbon. Oh well, I still love both. Woodford is great too, I picked up a liter of that last time I was at the duty free store. It didn't last very long once I got to Montreal.

  • I should have said it won't be "Kentucky Bourbon and they won't be able to call it that".......hence it ain't bourbon.

  • I love me some Woodford Reserve and am currently drinking through a bottle of Basil Hayden's. I bought a bottle of Eagle Rare but Snake "accidentally" put it in his cooler during the ND game and drank it at his house after that.

PS Technically not bourbon but I did buy a bottle of Crown Royal Special Reserve for my friends wedding in Europe a few years ago. Pretty good stuff and it turns out Russian's think it is too harsh. They were taking chugs out of some super strength Vodka that I couldn't handle.

Rob, dude... you're just plain flat-out wrong.
Kentucky has purposely created that notion that they are the only place in the world that makes bourbon... just... not... so. If I were Kentucky, I'd want to perpetuate that rumor, too... but it's false.
Tennessee and Kentucky got famous and are home to all of the famous places for insanely simple reasons: climate and water. Hot summers, cool winters, ideal for barrel aging over a long period of time, and the water is all mountain spring clean yada yada yada... That's it.
We have people come through all the time that maybe had a bottle of Rip Van Winkle one time, consider themselves experts all the sudden, and say that same crap about Kentucky... nonsense. They are the same people that think whiskey comes off the still brown...
While were at it, Glenmorangie & Laphroaig are not bourbon, but very damn good and major props for correctly using "whisky" and not "whiskey!" Good taste.

  • I usually drink Makers or Knob Creek. My father-in-law introduced me to Buffalo Trace, which is pretty good for the price.

Edit to add. Thanks to the google, I just discovered that Texas has one distillery making bourbon. I'm going to have to find a bottle.

Well, I like it. I poured it over a couple of ice cubes. It has a very nice taste and aroma to it.

Haha, the only time I had Knob Creek was after watching the CMU debacle in NYC while visiting our friend out there. We decided we needed some bourbon to drown our sorrows (we were already lit) and made it halfway through the bottle passing it around taking swigs before figuring out finishing the bottle was probably a horrible idea. I thought it was pretty good, but at that point I would have thought gasoline was acceptable.
