Good value for the cost? The old grandad 114

    Yes, IMHO.

Nice spicy front end but very drinkable for a 100+

If you're at the bar or a party and somebody's offering...take the Woodford and drink it neat, with a little ice, or a tiny splash of soda.

But I find Old Charter 8 is smooth and delicious enough to drink neat and is sold at a good price for every day sipping. shrug

If you're going to mix with anything thicker than sweet vermouth I'd go for cheaper on the bourbon scale, but the other RCMB high rollers might mix good stuff with anything. To each their own.

Evan Williams is a good choice for a high ball.

Old Charter 8-10 is one of the best buys for the money no question. I believe the finer barrels become Eagle Rare. If you can find Old Charter 10 Year/Ancient Age 10 Year(not to be confused with "10 Star!"), buy it every time. You're drinking older Buffalo Trace for half the price...

Ancient Ancient Age is what you are looking for.

    Ancient Age - 3 years
    Ancient 10 star - 6 years
Ancient ancient Age - 10 years

  • This "Gasoline Shortage" is getting serious. Maybe the folks at Maker's Mark can come up with an innovative solution.

Had some over the weekend. It's hotter than the 90 proof would indicate. Very dry and lacked that hint of sweetness that I like in bourbon. Added a splash of water to the second glass which I felt made it more enjoyable. It did have a nice lingering finish. Probably wouldn't buy again. What did you think of it?

  • It's ok, I agree on adding a bit of water to it not sure I would get again

edit: that was for Isdaddy up a ways, I love Blantons very good stuff

  • My current line up of Bourbon is: Hayden's, Blanton's Buffalo Trace, and Hancock's President's Reserve and Booker's.

I think the best bang for the buck was the Hancock's.

Try Clontarf if you like a tad bit of peat, Knappogue if not.

I've got Johns Lane, Yellow Spot, Middletons & Writers Tears on hand at all times. Cheers

    Too Easy

  • If anyone is heading down to Indy for the game, Kahn's Fine Wine and Spirits has a nice selection of bourbons at a better price than you would likely pay in Michigan. Can't go wrong with "Old Pogue Masters Select".

I've been waiting for you to check back in and gloat some more. You had quite the itinerary. So how did it go? Of the bourbon's you tasted what stood out the most?

    Isdaddy

  • On the road back right now. Hit all the places on the itinerary. Ill do a full summary and post pics tomorrow.

Met Jimmy Russell (wd turkey master distiller) and got a signed bottle of Russell's reserve single barrel so that was pretty cool.

Also, every stripper in Lexington has had a c section. Fact.

Ok - So I made it back alive and with everyone in bed I'll give you my thoughts from the itinerary:

    Day 1

    1. Alltech. I love their bourbon barrel ale, but they are definitely an afterthought brewery/distillery. They have 2 other beers that are not good. Main focus of the company is that they are a yeast manufacturer, so beer and spirits make sense but they seem to do these things for show not quality. One of the distillers in our group noticed "NGS" schedules on their clipboards which apparently means the add "Neutral Grain Spirits" to their whiskey to bump up alcohol/production without having to produce more. Kicked the trip off well, but left plenty of room to improve as we went.

    2. Country Boy Brewing. Fantastic. Barrel Aged Brown Ale and Barrel Aged Imperial Red were great. The whole beer lineup was solid and the service atmosphere was great. Its a smallish industrial type unit but they are all about the beer. No food and you'll have to go there to get their beer, but worth the trip if you're in the area.

  • Day 2:

    3. Four Roses: Tour was pretty good, the guy was knowledgeable, but nothing remarkable. It was my first realization of how commercialized these places are when they were selling Four Roses iPhone cases. The tasting room was very nice. I bought a bottle of their Single Barrel which was significantly better than the others (had more spice/pepper to it which you will see is my style). Overall impression was that it was good being the first stop, but once we had finished it was clear that this experience was middle of the pack.

    4. Wild Turkey: I love the old visitor center, but its being replaced by an eyesore of a building. The tour was below average. Impressive, but questions we had got answers like "They don't have that in our tour script". The fermentation room was pretty cool. They only gave 2 samples per person, but with a big group we are able to try them all. The Russell's Reserve 10 is really good. I've had it before, so I got a bottle of the Single Barrell RR this time. I don't think I liked it significantly more than the 10 for the price, but I wanted something different this time. Heavier char character. The 6 year old RR Rye was also really good.

The highlight was meeting Jimmy Russell who is the Master Distiller and has been there 59 years. He was so cool. Chatted with us about Chicago and how he was just up here drinking at Delilah's and some other place that does a burlesque show. Then he proceeded to bust my balls when I asked him what his favorites were outside of WT. Really good sport and he signed about 15 things for us.

    5. Buffalo Trace: Its not really fair to compare this to the others, but I will. Far and away the best spot, but with the barrel selection process they serve us lunch, give us a much more in depth tour and then we get to hand select. The tour did NOT have a video to kick it off (most did), which in my opinion is way better. Our tour guide had been there for 2 years, but he knew everything and we had professional distillers asking him questions. The history and look to BT is awesome and they aren't trying to make it into some modern warehouse looking place like Alltech, WT, etc. We tasted 9 barrels - 3 Wellers (6.5 yrs), 3 BT (8 yrs), and 3 Elmer T Lee's (9 yrs).

If you ever get the chance to do this, grab it. Its my second and it gets better each time. To compare the differences in two exact recipes right next to each other is challenging, but I accept. The downside was the lack of product to buy onsite, but it didn't matter since I'll get a bottle of each of what we selected when they are done being bottled and the stuff I really want comes out in October (Stagg, Handy, PvW).

    6. Barrel House Distillery: When they say Micro, they mean Micro. These guys are ridiculously nice. They let us sleep in a rental house one of them owns for free. Their operation is tiny and very pieced together, but they are operating this as a passion project/second jobs. It looks like my homebrew operation. Their bourbon isn't ready yet (its been barreled for 3.5 yrs) but they have a couple of other spirits. They do a rum in bourbon barrels which imparts a nice bourbon flavor into the rum which I like, because I'm not a big rum fan. If I liked rum, this may not be my cup of tea. Its really refreshing to see such a ground floor project. Worth the trip to shoot the shit with Jeff and Pete, but your expectations should be in line.

  • Day 3:

    7. Independent Stave Company: This was really cool. They had videos at every station, which were a waste of time in my opinion, but really cool to see the process in person. The demonstration of repairing a damaged barrel was badass. This guy could take apart and fix this barrel in about 2 minutes. I'm fairly strong, but this guys hammer was like picking up a cinderblock. Highly recommended but leaves you thirsty.

    8. Makers Mark: Full disclosure - I don't like their bourbon. No rye in the bill, its too sweet for my taste and not enough character. The sweeter mash appeals to a lot more people and it shows. The place was packed. Fox Chicago was actually there filming a segment for our tour too. Bourbon flavor/review aside here is my big take away. They went to the Disney school of tours. The tour guide was fantastic. Trained well, excitable, very well done. The grounds are beautiful. But the love for me stopped there. I like there personal touches and uniqueness. This place was Disneyland. Everything was staged and gimmicky. They tell you how they protect the recipe and won't change it in one breath, and in the next how they are going to water it down to meet demand but how that doesn't really change the recipe. But at least they listened to the feedback and didn't do it. They hang signs about how billboards are ugly and distracting, but theirs are great. Yes, its popular and I get why people love it, but too touristy.

As for the whisky - there's just the 46 and the standard MM to taste. The 46 was slightly better as you could tell the difference in the french oak finishing. Funnily, they also give you a sample of what they say is "over-matured" MM. Every single person in our group (7 - 6 of whom are in the booze/distilling) said the over-matured was their best product.

    9. Heaven Hill: We didn't do the tour as we ran out of time, but they have a front end historical museum section that you can peruse. It was pretty interesting. I was able to find a bottle of a bourbon I have been trying to chase down so that was worth it, but we didn't do a tasting either as they would only do it for the people on the tour (down votes for them).

10: West 6th Brewery. Their IPA was ok, but the rest were not great. Their Saison was confused. Not quite French, not quite Belgian, too American. Their English IPA was off. Had Acetylaldehyde flavors and it tasted nothing like it was an English Style IPA, just another version of an American. I didn't try the Brown Ale but the consensus on that was it was "just ok".

10 1/2: Bluegrass Tavern: Not a distillery, but a fantastic selection of Bourbons. One of the crew got Jefferson's 18 yr and it was fantastic. Next time I am down there I will pick up their 21. I had a Stagg which is consistently my favorite.
