  • Jeremiah Weed is awful but has an interesting aviation connection ; Angel's Envy is really good but very expensive (>$40)

  • i have found Ezra Brooks to be the closest comparison to JD for half of the price. its a nice buy if you are on a budget

  • Bourbon is my favorite, but she's a selfless whore. As much as I have appreciated her, I fear she has depreciated me.

  • Has anyone tried the Costco Kirkland small batch bourbon? 20 bucks is a great price for a full liter. My Google search came up with mixed reviews.

I was just about to post, "no other Ezra Brooks fans, huh?"

It's def. no Knob Creek, but it makes for an okay everyday whiskey. Also, surprised that no one has mentioned Weller.

  • I tend bar at a spot in Memphis that has a great bourbon selection. We're one of two bars in town that carry Pappy Van Winkles 20yr. Right now we're doing a bourbon flight with Eagle Rare 10yr, Buffalo Trace and Pappy Van Winkles 15yr.

Right now I'm really enjoying Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr Old Fashioned Sour Mash. It's made by Buffalo Trace, recreating a sour mash technique by the good Colonel in the late 19th century. It's a limited edition run and I highly recommend it.

I vote Excellenceade as we have a limited time to get absolutely trashed due to the early gametime.

  • Bourbon has always been a cold weather - football day type of booze for me; and I'm partial to variations of Manhattans. I recently had a great drink at the Oyster Bar in Philly called a "Rhino Tooth". Here's the recipe: 4 parts 1792 bourbon, 2 parts Bonal Quina and 1 part Benedictine. The glass rim is rubbed with a grapefruit wedge. A little sweeter than a VO Manhattan; but a great cocktail.

    You'll thank me later.

  • Had a tough night last night. Had a sampling to see which to buy. Heres the final list:

    Stagg 15yr
    Pappy 15
    Sazerac 18
Van winkle family rye 12 yr
Buffalo trace single oak ($90 for a half 5th)
    colonel taylor sour mash
Old rip van winkle 10 yr

My thoughts - the stagg is awesome. Its 71.5% so its perfect to cut with 1 cube of ice or a nip of water. Pappy was smoother but i like a bit of a bite. Plus at the same price if you cut the stagg you end up with more for your buck. The pappy rye was delicious. Sazerac was great flavor but very very dry finish.

I have a bottle of stagg on reserve that im picking up tuesday.

The trace single oak didnt do much for me but maybe because i had higher expectations.

Have a photo ill post when not on mobile

    That's some good drinking, sir.

I posted earlier about the EH Taylor. Curious what you thought about that? I really dig it.

  • By brother in law owns a wine and spirits shop so he has quite a collection.

I liked tha Taylor sour mash a lot. Well rounded spice/sweetness, but honestly that was one of the later ones where my palate was slightly drunk.

  • I'm drinking the Eagle Rare 10 year right now. It's a little sweet for me. I'm definitely enjoying it but it might be awhile before I put it in my purchasing rotation.

  • honestly though,
Bourbon is pretty amazing. It's the only booze that can be corn, salt, peat, chalk, starch, and honey all at once.
I'm nibbling a bit right now--gently on the rocks, of course.
