Brandon Inge Death Watch - 4/26/2012 R.I.P.

I'd switch Tom Brookens over from 1st base coach before B. Inge got another start at 3rd

Tom Brookens?! It's all about Gene Lamont!

Why do people try so hard to squeeze this turd into a position? He is a club house distraction, can't hit, has no power, and his defense has fallen off so much it's not funny. Magllio was ten times the tiger this guy was and people couldn't see him off fast enough.

Hey - I'm all for releasing Inge immediately. I'm just pointing out that there is one other player on the roster who is even a worse hitter. I just can't wait for the Marlboro Man's Sunday day game roster where he bats Laird and Inge in the 8 and 9 hole and the opposing pitcher throws underhand to both of them to keep his pitch count down.

Don't bother. While I'm tired of Inge myself, trying to argue the fact that he's had a decent MLB career with some of the "experts" on here is fruitless.

Looking back at his batting and fielding stats over his career, he was a serviceable player for the tigers from 2004 to 2010, never really more than serviceable. The fact that he is/was scrappy, perceived as good in the community/locker room, and is white are why he was a local star. He was a good fielder, but never won a gold glove. He used to have a decent but below average on base percentage, but no longer does. He has over a 100 more strikouts than hits for his career. He no longer is viewed as a good club house guy. Leaving out all that other local hero crap, what about that description makes anyone want him to win an every day starter spot, or at his age even a backup role?

Easy answer: He's buddies with the "boss".

Curtis Granderson was beloved by Tigers fans and he's not white. He was scrappy. He is perceived as good in the community and locker room. He is a good fielder, but never won a gold glove. He used to have a decent but below average OBP. He has close to as many strikeouts as hits for his career.

Feel free to compare their career stats, Grandy was and more importantly still his performing at or above a serviceable level, Inge is not. I get it you like Inge, I can't fault you for that, but he no longer is useful for this team, period.

Grandy was a whole different ball of wax. If he were white, no one would miss him. I don't mean this as a cut against him because by all accounts he's a good dude, but he's the type of black person most white people think of when they say "hey I have black friends!"

    2004: 2.3 WAR
    2005: 3.6 WAR
    2006: 5.8 WAR
    2007: 2.8 WAR
    2008: 1.3 WAR
    2009: 1.1 WAR
    2010: 2.4 WAR

Pretty decent. I'm not an Inge dude really, but to act like he's just been a ho-hum player is not really fair. He's had a solid career for the most part.

  • not sure if this article was written by an actual sports writer or Inge's PR firm:

"Not every major leaguer worked harder than 90% of his peers, by his trainer's estimation, during the off-season.

Not every major leaguer gained 18 pounds of muscle, while getting leaner.

Not every major leaguer had thick enough skin or a mind focused enough to see that he could control only what he did, how hard he worked.

    Brandon Inge did."

You asked "what about that description makes anyone want him to win an every day starter spot". All I'm saying is those descriptions that you used also described another player who I would want as an every day starter, as would most others on here.

As far as Inge, if Leyland feels he is good enough to help the team, that's fine. If he doesn't, that's fine also. Inge isn't going to make or break this team's chances to win a World Series. Too many, including you, think that even having Inge on the bench (or even as a starter if he beats our a few players) will kill the Tigers chances of winning it all.

Not every major leaguer stayed on a roster after hitting under .200 last season.

    Brandon Inge did.

So did Chone Figgins, Adam Dunn, Mike Cameron, Kelly Shoppach, Russell Branyon and about 30 other players in the AL. What's your point?

It's great that he works hard, it's great that he gained 18 pounds of muscle and it's great that he's got thick skin, but at the end of the day he still hit under .200 with very little power. That's terrible. There's no way to spin that.

I like Inge, I want to see him do well, but he has to hit better than that. On top of that, you can't hit .197 and then start pouting when the team replaces you.

Figgins has a $9M contract for '12 and $8M contract for '13 option year is '14

Dunn's contract runs through 2014 and he's scheduled to get $14M this season and $15M for the next 2 seasons

The Tigers on on the hook for Inge's $5.5M this season and have a $500K opt out

So Inge stays since he's going to get paid anyway and he's just an expensive insurance policy for '12.

The Tigers still have VMart contracted through 2014 when he's 35 and he's on the books for $13M this year, $13M for '13 and $12M for 2014.

A steaming pile of crap isn't a bargain just because it costs so much less than an ounce of gold.

    LoneWolfSparty

  • The way Leland manages, he will use Inge as that late inning defensive specialist. As stated, the Tigers are on the hook for him anyway financially. I realize they also have Kelly, but this will enable Leland to use multiple defensive specialists to close out games (and as a side note, I'm not sure how I feel about that late inning defensive specialist philosophy). $0.02

    Its five o'clock somewhere.

Inge can 'stay' in Toledo and be helpful to young prospects on their way up. He doesn't need to 'stay' in Detroit because we owe him $$$. He can be a farmhand 'player/coach since he's so popular.moon

A solid career? He has been serviceable in the field, yes. So I guess defensively if serviceable is cryptic for solid, so be it. But unfortunately , baseball also calls for the player to be able to hit the ball. And Inge makes everyone yearn for the Tommy Veryzer days.........
