Breaking Jim Bollman as new OC

  • A Jim Bollman google image search does not inspire confidence.

    Can he recruit?

No. He was arguably the worst recruiter on JT's staff. He's a lazy recruiter and does not enjoy doing it.

  • Sounds like we got what we paid for. When the teams we are trying to compete with are paying their coordinators 2-3 times what we can pay ours, well, you know it's going to be tough.

That being said, I trust MD, and maybe he knows a lot more about this guy's potential than anyone else does.

    Can he recruit?

No. Recruiting is one of his biggest weaknesses and one of the key reasons Meyer fired him immediately when he came on board as our head coach. The most common word I used to hear from program insiders to describe his recruiting and overall work ethic was "lazy".

I'm absolutely appalled that Dantonio hired the guy. The only year at Ohio State where he was actually the play-caller was 2011 (prior to that Tressel was our offensive coordinator & playcaller in reality). Look up our offensive statistics that year if you dare -- in fact you guys probably remember the game where you beat us 10-7 where you guys probably set a sack record against us. Aside from his incompetence as an OC / Playcaller, his OL development is almost as bad. I've never seen a coach take more talent and do less with it than Jim Bollman. I'm sorry that you guys will now have to deal with him eating into your overhead. He was fired from Ohio State, went to Boston College where their run game actually got worse under his tutelage than it was before he was hired, and then he was fired following that single season (2012), hired at Purdue briefly and now moving to Michigan State.

    Good luck guys.

As an OSU fan, I have to say have fun running it up the middle for 1 yard, then again for 2 yards, then either throwing an incompletion on 3rd and 7 or completing a 4 yards pass...

    So Roushar didn't actually leave?

  • He has a lot of rings to wear on recruiting visits. shrug

    He'll fit right in, then.

  • Sorry guys, from an OSU perspective. Bollman was a great coach fundamentally, however he really lacked in talent evaluation and doesn't enjoy recruiting. Our fans really were frustrated with his tendencies to run on 1st and 2nd and then be forced into an obvious passing down. I think his last season here we went whole games without passing/only passing once on first down. That said, he did put together a pretty good showing vs scum that year that surprised most all of the fans

I'm not blowing sunshine. If Tressel had this guy on staff, he must have talent.

Fire Bollman. Lol this is disappointing. However we must give the guy a season to show us what he has up his sleeve before we run him out of town like Roushar. To be completely honest I think I want Roushar back he was fine in 2011, last year was due to personnel.

We're only two pages in and this line has already been tossed out a few times.

How do you know how much MSU is paying Bollman? How do you know it doesn't compare favorably with other programs?

What we do know is that this is someone Dantonio has personal ties with and has worked with before. He has consistently made coaching selections based on that criteria.

I'm not advocating one way or another for the hire, but I think it's silly to assume Dantonio didn't get exactly who he wanted because of salary issues.

I just read on Twitter (so it must be true) that the 2010 team set OSU offensive records. Is that inaccurate?

Seems like last season we went entire games without picking up a first down.

I'm going to withhold judgment until the first time we go three and out. Then I'll be calling for his head.

In 2011, your program was in disarray due to scandal. I don't think it's really fair to judge him on that season alone.

Jim Bollman to Michigan State as offensive coordinator? Come on, it's not even March 1st, let alone April 1st.

Jim Bollman? MSU fans should be picking up their torches and pitchforks. LOL, what a disaster.

In his only OC season Jim Bollman took Braxton Miller, a veteran line he hand-picked, NFL talent at RB/WR & finished 107th in total offense.

Maybe, but that was with Pryor and JT calling the plays. Most years the O worked despite Bollman.
