I design logos as well as websites and publications for a living and am the resident typography expert at work. I've done designs for major college programs. I can spot amateur work. Quote from Sports Illustrated with link attached:
"The Nets say the logo and color scheme were designed by minority owner Jay-Z and inspired by the New York City Transit Authority subway signs from 1957."
Shocker! Amateur work from Jay-Z just as I predicted above! I can spot it.
This "design" is Adobe Illustrator type on a path tool and warp arc filter using Akzidenz Grotesque Condensed paired with, for some inexplicable reason, Gill Sans Light. It's ironic because Gill Sans was inspired by Johsnton, the official typeface of the London Underground. But this design is inspired by the New York subway system signs? Right.
