Bruce Weber Pure Class

So we should just tolerate mediocrity? If MSU had that attitude John L Smith would still be in East Lansing. The Glen Mason comparison is insane because Mason actually improved Minnesota football from where they were under the previous regime. Illinois had clearly slipped under Weber, and the arrow was pointed downwards. There is no disputing that. I'm sure if the eventual replacement for Izzo took MSU down a level you guys wouldn't want him sticking around no matter how "classy" he might be.

That's the thing. If Tom izzo himself, final fours and all, just went through the 6 year stretch of Bruce weber at least 1/2 this board would be calling for izzo to go.

But when another school does it they "lack class." Shoot, we had an AD hire a coach while the coach's current team was at halftime of a bowl game.

  • Bruce is definitely a great guy but come on, its not like he got a raw deal here. The Ilini lost like 12 of their last 14 games. thats awful. Plus after 2005 he had little to no success in March. he deserved to get fired.

They were spoiled by their stretch from 2000-2005 -- a national title game, four Sweet Sixteens, multiple conference championships. They thought that could continue, but that was pretty much the best they could expect to do in any given 5-year period.

They think they are a better basketball school than they really are because they tasted elite-level success for a small period of time. I'm not saying they aren't better than many other programs, but they just aren't as great as they think they are.

They were spoiled, but they missed the obvious point.

When you have an A+ coach, you lock him down and give him whatever the hell he wants. If Bill Self were still at Illinois, they would have a national championship by now.

Blame the administration for this one

And I thought the "go cats" was for Northwestern when first reading it, but a excellent subtle dig by Weber

  • I feel like this ad has a bit of FU to it. I think he's genuine about thanking everyone who supported him, but he's giving the finger to the haters. To me the message is you fired a perfectly good coach and getting hired so quickly elsewhere validates that.

  • I always enjoy the goofs who think their tolerance or intolerance of less than championship/deep NCAA tournament runs makes them important in decisions to change coaches. Its donors who call the shots and administrators listen to them with a keen ear.

If the word mediocrity was banned from sports message boards at least 25% of posters whould have nothing to complain about.

Weber was a decent coach whose teams gave MSU fits, especially at home. He did things above board. Might be why Self succeeded at IL and now at KU while Weber didn't have similar experiences. More than a few writers and coaches say the Big Ten has been squeaky clean since Self left for Kansas.

  • Illinois is not going to win until they start spending some $$$$ on their facilities....they are turning into the joke of the Big Whatever conference...

  • Weber seems like a good guy, but he also refuses to take any blame for what's happened to the program over the past 6 seasons. Nice gesture with the ad, now he needs to move on.

They've hired AECOM and should be receiving the plans to renovate tAH this summer. It is long overdue, I agree.

Though that has very little to do with winning or losing.

  • Weber never tried to keep up with the Jones' - he tried to drag them down to his level.

It seems like recruiting clean with shitty facilities would be a challenging task. Which would seem to affect winning.

Doesn't seem to affect Duke, does it? The facilities at Illinois aren't THAT bad, the practice facility is fine and the improvements needed at Assembly Hall impact the fans far more than the players. It needs more restrooms, better concessions and some luxury boxes. Why would recruits care about that?

Also, recruiting wasn't the problem, Weber had more top 100 recruits on his roster last season than Illinois has ever had. The problem was signing a grand total of one decent PG from 2004-2011.

Duke has just a tad bit more lore than the speed of Dee Brown.

No kidding. The pity party on this board for "poor classy Bruce" is really strange. Dude is a multimillionaire who got 3.5 million to stop working. And all people talk about is how he got screwed.

    Dear Illinois, please screw me.

Ahh gee, poor Bruce. Why do such horrible things happen to such wonderful people? Why? WHY??!!

    FTR, JLS improved the program.

We did go through that stretch - 2002 - 2008

I always laugh when people think "mediocre" means "not as good as we think they out to be." It means "average" or "middle of the pack." As in "median."
