Burn In Problems on my Plasma

  • I have had my plasma for about a little over 2 years now. Right now when I first turn it on I get ghosting from the Dish Network Ad thing that tells you what movies are avialble it also happens if I am using my X Box I get ghosting of the ittle box that says I am logged in. After about 5 minutes the ghosting goes away and it is not much of a problem. What I am wondering is if it will become a bigger problem and making the TV unwatchable and if ithere is anything I can do to prevent it or remove it at this point.

  • I've had some issues with mine, the most notable was a couple days after the NBA draft I still had the ghosting from their on screen graphic (one more way the NBA teams drafting Day Day later than advertised fucked us)... I also get it when my daughter's been watching shitty letterbox SD shows for too long.

I've found by running full screen high def content for about a half an hour (with no on screen watermarks) gets rid of it. If you want to prevent it? See if you have a pixel oscillator option in your settings.

  • I bought my Plasma this spring with the assurance from articles I read that burn in is no longe a problem with plasmas. I am startiing to see some issues after watching news programs.

I was aware of running a program when you 1st get the TV to avoid this problem, can I still use something or is it too late now?

I did the 100 hours of slide... I don't know that it had much impact, the idea is more for color stabilization not burn in prevention... helps "age" the pixels and phosphors at the same rate in the early going... but once you hit that 100 hours it probably doesn't help to run it.

  • My nephew who worked in Best Buy home electronics told me that simply running a pure white screen for a couple hours should remove the burn-in. Best way would be to create a slide in PowerPoint then run it off an SD or through a computer link to your TV.

SD? Like standard definition. I have my laptop connected to my TV threw an HDMI cord that will still work correct?

  • ghosting is a nartural phenomena if you have a static image on the screen for more than an hour or so. It always goes away. Burn in is permanent, and that will take 24 hours or more with most plasmas.

The only way to prevent some ghosting is some plasmas have the ability to move the screen around a little bit every so often. Not sure if your tv has it or not.

In the end, I get ghosting on my plasma since I use it as a HTPC and for video games. I have had images ghost, but they always go away.

You're talking about image retention. Burn in is permanent.

Most plasmas exhibit some degree of image retention. It's nothing to worry about, assuming you're not doing it in the early life of the TV when burn in is more possible.

Just set pixel shift to the max possible right when you get the tv, and use the break in slides for 100 hours or so if you're really worried.

I am pretty sure he means SD card (secure digital card).

In the end, like I mentioned, you don't really have anything to worry about. If you play video games or watch something with a ticker more than an hour or two, you will probably see some minor ghosting that will go away in a few minutes.

Isn't it too late for that or will it keepm things getting worse? That is my main concern at this point. I dont want to lose a $600 TV after 2 years.

Like I said...if it goes away after a few minutes, it's not burn in. It's image retention which is not permanent, nor is it a big problem (I believe scott also said this).
