CFN - Michigan State Preview - Respect Due

short answer... Yes. Yes it is. The game against UGA went a long way as far as the national perception of the defense. Living on the East Coast, it gets talked about when the top D's in the country are discussed.

I knew they'd be pretty damn tough... and luckily i have a new main cfb team so i cant get too upset when the hawks lose... haha

i think these predictions are insane... 6 or 7 wins? as much as i might like that, i see no way that happens

    Honest question...

I know the defense was great last year and returns most of the starters but is it really regarded by most as being the best in the nation. Just hard to believe the way people talk about Alabama, LSU, etc.

    Furthermore:

MSU joins Alabama and LSU as the only programs to have four players listed on the Bednarik Award (Defensive Player of the Year) watch list.

Uhh, Phil? Greeks won that war buddy.

Phil must have took journalism classes with Steve Helwegan. Notice how his other predictions have equally shitty analogies w/ Axl Rose and the Tom Cruise divorce. And there is a subtle food theme too like he ate a bucket of hot wings before writing this garbage.

    From last October:

Bart Doan – Michigan will win

There are two reasons Michigan ends the hex against State: Denard 2.0 and Greg Mattison.

Look, college football isn’t quantum physics, nor is it the NFL. When you have the best player on the field it means a lot. Denard is just that. The old mantra of “give it to our best player and let him run around the corner” applies here. I don’t want to hear about Jerel Worthy. He has as good of a chance of catching Shoelace as I do of shooting a 57 tomorrow at the local links. Yes, MSU has handled Robinson thus far, but that was with elementary coaching.

This year, the aforementioned Mattison is in the fold, leading a once sieve like Michigan defense to top 10 in the nation in total scoring D. That doesn’t just happen with improvement. It happens with firing Greg Robinson, whose coaching past includes absolutely nothing inspiring.

Mattison, on the other hand, is bringing these Michigan players knowledge of how to play like Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, and Ed Reed. Michigan State hasn’t seen this group. They fly to the ball. They move all over the place pre-snap. They adjust by the possession, instead of by the season.

People have been skeptical of the Wolves all season, mostly because of Rich Rod’s routine 5-0 starts turned disappearing acts. That’s fair. It doesn’t mean it’s an iron clad argument. Michigan this year is different.

Statistically, which is more tangible, the Spartans are masters of giving up the short field. Being 112 in punting nationally isn’t exactly something inspiring against a team that moves the ball like a nail through drywall. On top of that, their vaunted rushing attack is 83rd in the country, which isn’t always an indictment on their backs or line as much as it is the inability of the passing game to scare anyone. Man coverage is en vogue against Michigan State. Just ask Notre Dame, who took them out back and read them their rights.

Michigan State has two things going for them: home field and a bye week. Little brother needs it. They look like a team that peaked last year, and is already losing ground in the recruiting battle to Michigan yet again in-state. Shoelace is too good at pulling the Wolves out of jams. And this year, the defense is too NFL for MSU to run away with it when things get tough. They struggle with defenses capable of giving them multiple looks pre-snap…such as Ohio State…and look terminally hung over, from the time they limped by Youngstown State to now.

Time to go get your shine box again, Sparty.

This post is straight out of bleacher report. College football isn't the nfl, but then mentions Mattison and his 'knowledge of coaching players how to play like Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, etc.

MSU hasn't seen this group? How the hell would they see them on the field? On tv?

I realize authors write this garbage just to get a stir out of MSU ppl, hits for their site, but at least make the article somewhat credible. "A harder than appears game at CMU", does this guy watch college football? Or just goes by all time series record?

Yeah, 2012 recruits will really help them on the field in October of 2011.

  • What do you think about the comments on the depth of the secondary?

My impression is that the 2s do not see the field much because of the high level of 1s. Who is going to sit Adams? Clearly no credit for incoming freshmen.

We don't have much proven depth back there, that's for sure. The LB's and DL rotate much more so the backups are proven. I'm not too worries about the secondary.

Hahaha, that is literally the worst write-up I have seen by sports writer ever...well maybe other than the infamous tide has turned in hoops article.

This is a real gem: "And this year, the defense is too NFL for MSU to run away with it when things get tough." Defense is "too NFL"....hahahah, who Kovacs?

  • My only issue with the write-up is this :

"The season will be a success if … Michigan State goes to the Rose Bowl. Enough is enough. Yeah there are concerns on offense, and yeah there are consistency problems, and yeah the three game stretch at Michigan, at Wisconsin and Nebraska is a killer, but it’s time to get to California already. It’s easier to do now, needing to win a six-team division to get to the title game rather than win an eleven-team conference, and after coming achingly close to beating Wisconsin in the inaugural Big Ten championship, a better Spartan team needs to finish the drill"

If the big ten were under the old rules, we would have gone to the rose bowl the last two years. We would have won the tie-breaker in 2010, and last year, we had the outright best record.

You have to love that he mentions MSU loses because they contained shoelaces due to "elementary coaching," then goes on to mention Mattison, not borges. Hhhmmm...Mattisson coaches the O? borges is better using shoelaces then rich rod? And yeah, Robinson has had a dud of an entire coaching career...it was all him, not the type of recruits they brought in.

  • This is what happens when sportswriters have to produce summaries for the 120 plus Division I college football teams within a relatively short period of time, and they haven't probably seen more than a few minutes of film of the team they are evaluating. They know nothing about Maxwell other than he is the new QB replacing KC. They know nothing about the backup receivers other than DA because he is a hardship transfer from Tennessee. Their is also nothing in it for them commercially since MSU is small market team compared to OSU, Notre Dame, Penn State, or Michigan. And after all who is going to remember their predictions. . . no name sportswriters from CFN.

The upside is hopefully some of our opponents takes CFN seriously in preparation for MSU game day this fall.

Kind of sounds like he thinks every team used to play each other or something. Neat trick with 8 conference games. And now the "easy" way has to win a ninth conference opponent against one of the 2-3 best teams -- maybe for the second time.

    Garbage.

Probably not at Bama or LSU's level but just below it, elite for sure.

Ill be honest, I think at least early while the young replacements are being broken in and learning the system, MSU might have a better D than Alabama.

In terms of potential, I would take Bama. If I had to win my season opener, I'm not sure I wouldn't take Gholston and crew.

    Michigan Bold Predictions-

    Phil Harrison:

Unless you are an Ohio State or Michigan State homer, you have to like the chances of the returning talent and coaching staff to give things a good run. But that’s not the spicy prediction with an aftertaste kick we’re after. Nope. Michigan will lose at least three games. The schedule is tough as nails on the road with a game in Dallas against Alabama to open the season, and tilts at Notre Dame, at Nebraska, and in the ‘Shoe. That’s before we even factor in games at home with Sparty and Iowa. Factor that in with all of the breaks Denard and Co. got a lot of breaks last year to win almost every close game, and it’s not hard to imagine a fall-off. Don’t get me wrong--the Wolverines are a talented team. It’s just hard to see them making it through the minefield of the 2012 season without a few missteps.

    Bart Doan:

Bold? Call me crazy, but I don’t really think beating Alabama is a bold prediction. Michigan is a top 10 team at a neutral site against a club that lost a substantial amount off their defense. Actual bold prediction? B1G championship, 0-1 loss is where I’m going, (@ Nebraska is their toughest tilt) and depending on how everyone else does, perhaps even a national title berth. And oh yeah, Denard Robinson will win the Heisman. What, am I only allowed one?

    Terry Johnson:

The Wolverines will make a return visit to a BCS bowl. They will not beat Alabama in the opener, but will win every game after that until the Big Ten Championship Game (sorry, Phil!). Despite a close loss to Wisconsin in the league title game, BCS bowls will salivate over the prospect of an 11-2 Michigan team with Heisman Trophy finalist Denard Robinson playing in his final college game

I agree with this. Bama has loads of talent but in the terms of game experience, MSU has the upper edge returning 18 of 22 in the defensive 2-deeps.

Saban is a great coach but a byproduct of that is that his system is pretty complicated as well, making it slightly harder for inexperienced players.

Just keep looking for BTN football replays. That's MATTISON on the sidelines for ND when they give up the 68 yard lightning strike, Smoker to Haygood. He's got a huge reputation with reporters. He's got a lousy record against MSU, and not just the current Spartan coaching staff.
