CHN: Versus/NBCSN close to college hockey broadcast deal...

  • Skip Berry, the director of media relations for the Tri-City Storm in the USHL, drafted a few interesting tweets today regarding an impending deal between the NCAA and NBC/Versus. Essentially, Berry says Versus will air a college hockey game-of-the-week every Friday starting in January, and the network will feature all five college hockey conferences at least twice.

Now, take note: Though Berry says some sort of official release will be published soon, nothing official is out yet.

The link below is to the dude's Twitter account.

  • I guess I'll have to wait and see. CBS College Sports channel and the Fox College Sports channels in Comcast's sports tier show plenty of college hockey already. I know Versus is more readily available, but I also have a feeling it'll have a big East Coast bias. The only question is, will this deal end up with the Frozen Four on Versus instead of ESPN? If so, this isn't good for college hockey as even fewer people will be exposed to it.

I forget the frozen four is on on ESPN half the time (they barely even care to cover it). At least NBC would make it a big deal, instead of a wicked stepsister.

Regardless, we'll be seeing MSU plenty on FSD and BTN in the future.

  • If it's off of ESPN then that would be the very last that we hear of Gary Thorne broadcasting hockey. Bummer.

  • Update: They're close. All five current conferences will be involved, and games will air on Friday and Saturday nights according to the contract that's currently being drafted.

  • Sounds like the Frozen Four isn't included in this deal, as it's just a deal with each individual conference to show some Friday and Saturday night games (will we get regional coverage or will it be a national game each night??). It'll be interesting to see how it's executed.

Also, I like the news of them rebranding Versus as NBC Sports Network.
