Cabin in the Woods

  • So, I rarely tout myself as anything, but if I am one thing besides a Michigan State graduate/fan, I am a horror movie buff. With that said, this is the best horror movie to come out since 2009 which was a very good year for horror and had a few classics (quick caveat, I have not yet seen Troll Hunter, and I have heard that is incredible, so maybe its the best since that). Its a great mix of suspense, humor, and original story telling. I wouldn't go so far as to say its scary, but it has an element of fear, especially in the early stages of the buildup. Definitely worth seeing.

I'd love to chat horror movies with anyone on here who shares my passion. Any recos? Any top 10 lists? Maybe we should start my own thread titles my top 10 horrors or something.

    Glad you stopped by Binford!

I'm a horror buff too (Taught a film and literature course on it at DePaul last year. When I wrote for the Chicago Sun-Times, I interviewed a lot of big names in the genre too. One of my last horror pieces with was with Eduardo Sanchez, who wrote and directed the Blair Witch Project.)

I'm glad you mentioned 2009. "House of the Devil" was my favorite horror film from that year.....by far.

    Yours?

Also house of the Devil. An instant classic. The setting and camera work, making it feel like an old 70's exploitation film was incredible. Truly suspenseful, creepy, and scary. Best horror of the year and 2009 had a good number as I'm sure you know.

A better question is whats your favorite of the 2000's. Mine is The Descent. I felt like it was the perfect mix of build up, suspense (both created and suspense from the environment itself), horror, and gore. The camera work and the ability of the film to make you feel trapped was amazing. My only real complaint about the film was the final little scare at the end; too easy of a trick.

The Descent had some excellent and memorable components but for whatever reason it tends to fall off my radar. I enjoy monster horror, but I usually am drawn more to human monsters instead. I know it has a devoted following and I respect that. It's a strong film, no doubt. The last scene takes place in the parked car, right?

I'm gonna throw you a curve ball which very well may have you rolling your eyes. While I think that The Strangers
was overall a blown opportunity, I strongly believe that the first 30 minutes (before all hell breaks loose) was the best horror filmmaking of the 2000s. Utterly pitch-perfect and terrifying. The latter being something completely absent in Cabin in the Woods.

I find that I like horror with fresh concepts more than a distinction between Monster/Supernatural/Psycho killer. So as an example, even though the movie Hostile is flawed, I found the concept very interesting so I enjoyed it. My favorites typically end up being those interesting/fresh concepts of horror that are also incredibly well made.

I agree that the Strangers has a great build up. Its unfortunate that it fell into the typical traps of a procedural and treated the audience like fools. Don't get me wrong, I can enjoy a well made procedural, but Strangers could have been more and they blew it. A movie like My Bloody Valentine comes to mind. Total procedural, dumb and gory, but it was well made and gave me some fun on a Saturday afternoon. Its not a masterpiece, but I'd give it a positive review.

Totally agree on Hostile and the idea of fresh concepts crossing boundaries, whatever the genre. For some reason it became hip to hate on Eli Roth and the Hostile franchise, but the films' concept awakened a very primal fear within me.

One thing I'd like to note about this film. I didnt like how the Hellraiser guy was killing the random guards at the facility at the end. The cool thing about Hellraiser is how its really a question of personal desire, and because its about desire, Pinhead (or whoever) only tortures (gratifies) and eventually kills people who choose to open pandoras box. He wouldnt have killed the guards unless they summoned him.

I liked it a lot. Very original and entertaining.

    SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

Anyone else thing the "ancient ones" were some sort of metaphor as in us, the audience? Like the the whole point was to please the horror movie audience with sex and gore? Or something smoke

I thought it was a reference to much of HP Lovecraft's writings.

This was a great movie, I loved it and have seen it twice. It's pretty freakin awesome. Funny and original, it doesn't take itself too seriously and delivers some decent scares, but overall it's just a cool twist.

The very ending was bad, should have been a monster hand. I am recommending this to everyone right now. I loved it 9.5 out of 10.

    Yup, was funny as hell.

This movie was actually a little cerebral at times too though.

  • didn't read this entire thread... but watched the movie last night with the wyff.

absolutely fantastic film experience... the acting wasn't necessarily great, but the creativity in the script was refreshing on nearly every level. 9/10 easy.

I bought some batteries, but they weren't included... so I had to buy them again. What do batteries run on?

  • Fuckin awesome. Saw it last night with a group of like 15. Only me and 1 other person liked it. All my friends and their girls are retarded confirmed?

  • Overall, I really liked the movie but the line seems to be drawn - hipsters love it and the boners, angry suburban chain restaurant types hate it

How am I on page 4 and you're the first person to recognize this (referring to the Lovecraft inspiration). No wonder some of you didn't like this movie, you had no idea what you were watching.

This movie was extremely good, and I honestly think they did themselves a disservice by showing mostly the cliche beginning parts, because on the surface, it's a very stupid horror flick. However, once you get past that (after the first 20 minutes or so), it unravels into an extremely cool take on the genre.

I'd easily give this movie an 8/10 and it's probably the best horror (if you can call it that) movie I've watched in the last few years.

Yup. Still love it. Wife still doesn't get it. She didn't even laugh at the "fuck you. Fuck you. Fuck you. " part. How is that possible.

  • Finally got around to seeing this. Entertaining, with a twist at the end, but not the slightest bit scary...which should be the ultimate goal of any horror flick. The suspense was completely taken out of the movie since you knew what was happening and who was controlling it. I did appreciate the humor though.

  • I heard this movie was good, but I thought it sucked. It is kind of in my alley becasue I loved Cabin Fever, but this movie was just kind of boring and stpuid. I did win 5 Bucks calling the slut to be the first death though.

  • i watched it on OnDemand the other night for the second time... while it didn't have the same level of "wow, didn't see that plot twist coming," it was still very good. i would still consider one of the most ingenious suspense/horror movies of the past 20 years, along with the first Scream, Saw and Funny Games.

I bought some batteries, but they weren't included... so I had to buy them again. What do batteries run on?
