Canyonlands/Arches National Park

  • Going to Moab for Canyonland/Arches for 4 days in July. Yep, know it will be blistering hot but only time we can go.Plan for lots of morning hikes. Any advice or suggestions for good hikes, bars, etc? In Canyonland, what sections do you like? Needles? Island in the Sky?
    Thanks!

  • There is a pretty extensive Moab thread already posted. Lots of great info on everything you're looking for. Have fun--it's an amazing place.

  • Although the attached link is to a video of a motorcycle cruise in the Moab area, there is a lot of good info re: Canyonlands.

  • Sign up for the fiery furnace ranger lead hike in arches...its 10 bucks a person as I recall.... takes about 3 hours...some climbing and tight areas, nothing too wierd but you should be in pretty good shape.
Arches hikes: double O hike; delicate arch hike.
    Canyonlands: upheavel dome hike

    Moab brewpubs are good.

Enjoy, was just there in late March....bring lots of water.

I can't give you any great hiking advice, but I was out there four or five years ago. Out of all the national parks I've been to, I actually thought that Canyonlands was the most underrated (the views from Island In The Sky are incredible) and that Arches was the most overrated.

  • If you are in Moab I would highly suggest that you don't miss Dead Horse State Park, very close by and well worth the time.

We did a float trip down the river that was pretty cool too.

  • Roger that/ Arches overrated. I have heard other people complement Canyonlands as well. Will make sure I spend more time there. I feel Zion is underrated by some as well.

  • If you've never been to Monument Valley, and you have time, make the trip. But Arches is great.

  • We were there a few years ago and really enjoyed both parks. Agree with the comment on the float trip (it was a nice change of pace from the hiking). I also agree with your comments on Zion. The Narrows hike at Zion was amazing. We also enjoyed Bryce ... very unique.

I "third" the float trip. I did some mildly aggressive rafting down the Colorado River and really enjoyed it. We took a break midway through and had lunch with the guide. Just some sandwiches and stuff. But it was a perfect memory.

Yeah, there are quite a few national parks in that area. Zion is awesome and Bryce Canyon is pretty cool as well. We also went to Capitol Reef and it was ok...but nothing to go out of the way for.
