Caper Healthy, Pushing For Reps

MSU running back Larry Caper's career has been marred by several injuries, but the senior is 100-percent healthy and looking for significant playing time entering 2012.

  • A healthy Caper would be a great starting RB for any Big Ten team. I hope he stays healthy and gets his carries. The kid is talented and deserves to get reps.

He definitely has a different persona about him this season. Caper is clearly very focused and mentioned a new dedication to the Bible after suffering his concussion at Nebraska. Seems like a man on a mission and I wouldn't leave him out of the running back picture at this point. Hill & Langford have been good, but Caper really hasn't been healthy enough to determine how large a role he can play.

  • I'm a huge Bell fan, but he can't have all the carries. A healthy Caper would be an excellent compliment to Bell. Both guys can run, block and receive out of the back field. We'll be able to run our whole offense when either one of those guys is in the game.

  • I'm a huge LC fan. . . he has done everything asked of him. . . he has been a clutch player, a good teammate, and a great Spartan. It's time for him to have some good health and good luck. Go to it LC.

  • Dan:

Any idea why Caper wasn't redshirted two years ago when he had the hand issues? He was rarely used and if so virtually on 3rd downs only. Bell was pretty capable and as we remember the Rock was running rampant that year.

Was it a case of him not wanting to sit out or the staff feeling they didn't have the luxury due to needs?

Caper is a better pass-protection guy than Baker was and with the amount of distribution in the backfield there will be plenty of packages where Caper can make an impact. Many wondered if he might transfer after losing the starting job to Baker and then Bell, and it would have been hard to blame him. But the fact that he stayed and continues to work is a testament to Caper's character.

Agreed, I love having these two RBs that can be competent receivers down the field. Was it the Iowa game last year where Roushar kept putting the RBs on routes that the linebackers couldn't handle?

  • Love Caper and his work ethic... but man, I wanna see Nick Hill's speedy ass breaking off 80 yard rushes. Again, though... Caper is very deserving of a spot.

Hill will certainly have his chances on special teams and I think he gets at least one return TD this season. Came very close on a number of occasions last year and has very impressive speed. Really interested to see how he handles the job at RB, especially during the spring game and in the nonconference schedule. Plenty of ways to use a guy like that and it may turn out that he ultimately earns the No. 2 RB job.

ya pretty much this. I was pissed all last season when we had Caper who seemed healthy and had positive impact just about every time we got him the ball yet we kept force feeding Baker who had fumble issues and was just not being really productive outside of the Michigan game.

Hope LC has a huge year.

The first time MSU basketball aired in France the French surrendered to Tom Izzo just to be safe.

    Speaking of Hill...

...If Bell and Caper are both gone after this season (or even just Caper), do you think he'll still do kickoffs? Or will that get relegated to another speedster? (looking at you, Nick Tompkins...)

Think that would probably go to another guy on the team should Hill become the starter. Too much wear and tear with X amount of touches per game at RB plus kickoff duties. Tompkins is a good candidate, Macgarret Kings Jr. was a stellar return man in high school and other receivers could emerge as well. Dantonio likes to have as many players as possible with a specific niche or role as long as it's in the best interest of the team.

And since you brought it up along with many others over the past few months, I don't see Bell leaving early. He should put up some big numbers with his talent and what figures to be a great offensive line, but didn't display that truly breakaway speed last season. He's a very well-rounded back with good NFL potential. I just think he's a four-year college player.

Hope he goes for 1000. He and LeVeon may be able to both do it this year.

Bible. Really. Sorry but I give no creedence to that. Who cares?

If he's healthy that matters. If he's ready to hit the hole hard. If he's ready to catch 3rd down passes from backfield? Yes.

If he's reading a book about spirituality? Nice. But not relevant to FOOTBALL.

The Christian aspect of our football team is starting to bother me. Saw a report that Maxwell was a "man of faith". Good for you but I don't care.

Play well. Be cool and have fun. Win games. Your religion is your business..not mine. Enjoy it.

But please don't sell me on this team or coach D on religion.....It's a public institution where we respect other faiths other than our own. Please don't champion yours.

Notre Dame is down the road if you want that...but a lot of born-agains probably don't want to go Catholic. See how this works?

Leave it out of football....now and forever.

    Amen.

Man you atheist are insufferable. Sorry that hearing some of the football players believe in God and faith bother you.

Maybe you should find a team that has only athiests.

good point. thoughtful response. But you know it's true. This team and coach are somehow valuing religion as part of being the team. I don't like it. Roll your eyes.....but make a point next time brother. It's a f/in state (STATE) university and that should be religion independent.

If you have another opinion let me hear it.

I know the school is not responsible for what writers put out there - and this is minor. But, CoachD, Cousins, Maxwell and now Caper....it's too much. Stop it. Drop it.

Talk about skills and health and teamwork, not religion.

If you have a point that this religious focus is somehow good, make it.

    I don't think it is.

There is nothing wrong with the players and coaches being gungho about their faith. They are free and entitled to do so.

Your problem should not be with the players. If you don't like the media including it in their story. Fine. We all see things in the media we dont want to hear about.
