Caper Healthy, Pushing For Reps

  • SilverSpartan said...

good point. thoughtful response. But you know it's true. This team and coach are somehow valuing religion as part of being the team. I don't like it. Roll your eyes.....but make a point next time brother. It's a f/in state (STATE) university and that should be religion independent.

If you have another opinion let me hear it.

I know the school is not responsible for what writers put out there - and this is minor. But, CoachD, Cousins, Maxwell and now Caper....it's too much. Stop it. Drop it.

Talk about skills and health and teamwork, not religion.

If you have a point that this religious focus is somehow good, make it.

    I don't think it is.

Yep, it's official. Spartan fans will piss and moan about everything and anything. Holy shit! (no pun intended)

Man you atheist are insufferable. Sorry that hearing some of the football players believe in God and faith bother you.

Maybe you should find a team that has only athiests.

Terribly off topic, but I am atheist and don't really care when guys talk religion, as long as it isn't pushed on me. Sure, it can get annoying sometimes, but so does Anthony Davis' unibrow... and I won't be telling him to shave it. Whatever floats your boat or finds your lost remote. Guys need something to get right on the field or court and if it's legal... I don't mind. I'll even be silent while Maxwell prays if it helps him get us the W.

Bible. Really. Sorry but I give no creedence to that. Who cares?

If he's healthy that matters. If he's ready to hit the hole hard. If he's ready to catch 3rd down passes from backfield? Yes.

If he's reading a book about spirituality? Nice. But not relevant to FOOTBALL.

The Christian aspect of our football team is starting to bother me. Saw a report that Maxwell was a "man of faith". Good for you but I don't care.

Play well. Be cool and have fun. Win games. Your religion is your business..not mine. Enjoy it.

But please don't sell me on this team or coach D on religion.....It's a public institution where we respect other faiths other than our own. Please don't champion yours.

Notre Dame is down the road if you want that...but a lot of born-agains probably don't want to go Catholic. See how this works?

Leave it out of football....now and forever.

    Amen.

i firmly believe all organized religion is a crock of shit, but this post is terrible. I don't have to believe it to appreciate what it can mean to others. Just a terrible post. Judge not lest ye be judged.

Part of the beauty of America is the idea of free speech and freedom to express religion. If you don't like it, don't listen to it and don't read it. Regardless of what you choose to believe (faith) you have to respect someone elses right to believe different. I am all for whatever helps to motivate someone, steer them in the direction, down the right path and walk the straight and narrow. The people who denounce religion and make it a point to speak out against it are just as bad as the ones who push it hard.

You only care to hear about the football aspect of the team, and I respect that. However, their team unity goes much deeper than the ON field facets of football and I enjoy reading about it. And yes, it is relevant to football and the on field success. If you don't want to hear about it, don't read it. But, if you don't believe that there is more to college sports, football, and X's and O's, ask Tom Izzo about his 2011-2012 basketball team and their success.

And, by the way, the bible portion was not even part of the original story. Dan mentioned it in the comments section after the story was posted. You are really just going out of your way to make it an issue.

OK fine you want independence why shouldnt these guys be able to independently express their religion? You ever thought that maybe, just maybe religion is important to these kids, and they think that God is helping them be the players that they are? If they talked about how much Coach D or Coach Mannie have helped them throughout their career nobody would have an issue with it, but since its God that is helping them everyone gets pissed about it.

There are certainly aspects of the contemporary Christian faith that can help pull together a football team, or any group of people who are working towards the completion of a common task. They happen to be the aspects of religion that can benefit society - a common moral code, allegories that are known to the team members and can be used to illustrate lessons, a sense of common purpose, etc. The aspects of religion that can damage society - abandonment of critical thinking, adherence to irrational dogma, mindless following - generally do not interfere with the mission of a football team. It's often not easy for a kid from the poor areas of Detroit and a kid from the middle of nowhere in Ohio to find common ground, but if they both were raised in Church, that can be a good starting point for them to build a relationship.

Like SilverSpartan, I've had some moments of 'Jesus Overload' with MSU football. I don't agree with him, though, that the religious talk should be cut off - the kids should say whatever they want, whenever they want. Now, if the religion gets too heavy from the coaching staff, that can create a problem - like he said, the University is a state institution, and there's a strange, blurry line that needs to be walked. The team can be full of Christians, but it cannot be a Christian team.

rhodesj5 - No one is going to tell you that there isn't more to college sports than X's and O's, sports wouldn't be interesting if it was just about schematics. It's a false argument to say that if you don't want religion to drive the team, then you must think it's all about X's and O's. If a player is an atheist, he can be just as inspired, just as dedicated, and just as good of a person as any Christian player. You're right to say the bond goes deeper, but it's more about common ground than actual faith in the God of Abraham.

It's peculiar that most people view "Man of Faith" as a great compliment. Christopher Hitchens used to say that calling someone a man of faith simply meant that they were willing to accept absolutely HUGE claims without requiring that they be supported by evidence. People read other attributes into "Man of Faith," such as morality, work ethic, etc., but some very awful people were men of faith as well. Faith isn't a positive trait on its own.

Hahah, that may be because it's kinda hard to prove that god is helping them to be the players they are. How often does he/she/it meet with them to workout, go over film, or break down defenses?
