This. I live in Detroit, and I've seen maybe 6 people walking around wearing OSU gear in the past three years.

    sorry mr professor!

i never use caps (or very rarely)...

now we can debate football or grammar/punctuation, ur choice?

This is the RCMB. Your grammar is worse then mines, and that is saying something. You will get flamed often if you keep doing that.

Don't question people not taking your opinions seriously then.

You're right about that, at least in the short term. But things evolve. The Rose Bowl is no longer the "grandaddy of them all," a thought at one time that would have been scoffed at.

jek, you're a good guy and i always respect your opinion...

that post was meant for someone who clearly didn't want to discuss the topic....

my point was not meant to dog msu in any way...

we (osu and msu) really only have 1 rival (altho, nd is a big one for u guys)...

but the t.v networks plan yrs in advance for the big games and they will play the odds (look at nbc giving nd that contract and they lost)...they just want to ensure the most viewers possible

Ironic? Or intentional comedy? Ill go with the former.

Meh. Mileage between campuses is irrelevant. I'm talking about the states as a whole. State of Alabama is split between Bama and Auburn fans...duh. State of Michigan might have a smattering of OSU fan, but it's basically UM vs MSU.

Yeah, but most bama and auburn fans didn't go to school there, so they don't count.

I agree the rivalry is a bigger deal to Ohioans. I still think the rivalry, on both sides, is bigger in their heads than what it actually is. Nothing beats a competitive in-state rivalry, because of the reasons I mentioned: because dealing with your scUM friends, family members, co-workers, neighbors, etc., transcends the game...it's 365 days a year.

On the basketball court is Michigan really our biggest game? Are they really our biggest rival in the conference?

    ok, rpmadmsu...

    forget about my opinions...

ask the networks or fans from other conferences who they would rather tune into (osu/um) or (msu/msu)...

not saying things won't change, but for now, it is what it is for a reason....

Not quite. Having grown up in Ohio and still close to many there, the UM game is THE game for them. Everything you said about being ingrained since youth is true there also. When i moved to Michigan, it was clear the intensity of the rivalry by people in this state is MUCH LESS than is the intensity in Ohio.

Of course it's bigger in ohio...who else would O$U consider a rival? PSU has never been a rival, they don't even play Notre Dame which would seem like a perfect rivaly given the proximity of the two schools and God forbid if the state of ohio would ever consider allowing another D-1 university within the state to threaten the instate talent pool running to Columbus.

If you think scUM's dirty little legal battle to keep MSU from becoming a threat within the state was ugly, one can only imagine what o$U would do if a school like UC would ever try to do the same.

Who the hell would those poor bastards in Ohio pull for if OSU had serious instate competition for their recruits - it's not like they have professional sports teams in Ohio. lol

    we're torn....

hate the thought of our game meaning nothing (hypothetically we both clinched our divisions and would meet again in the ccg)...

could u imagine 2006 and most of our star players sitting out so to avoid injury in the ccg?

i'm old school, and would prefer osu/um in the same division so we only meet once a yr!!!!!

How many times has Michigan State clung to our "rivalry" with Michigan after they have smashed us year after year?

Losing to them so many years in a row increased our hate for them if nothing else...

Not true at all. The game was borne out of the yearly battles between Bo and Woody which, more times than not, decided the Big Ten and sent the winner to the Rose Bowl. This concluded through the 90's with Carr owning and ruining the seasons of Cooper's top 5 teams and into the 2000's with Tressell owning Carr and RichRod. It has nothing to do with demeaning MSU.

Dantonio has morphed it into a game that might effect us--- maybe. And that's a fact that many um and OSU fans hate.

It won't be the same and in the highly unlikely event thiose two win their division and it effects the conference, delany and the boys at the admin building fucked that up big time with two games in a row. This isn't Bo and Woddy's big ten anymore. It's different. Those days are left for romantic look backs. A thing many wolverine fans do regularly lately.

Agreed, lets keep it where it's at so MSU can keep that storied rivalry game irrelevant.

  • at the end of the day msu/um is and will be a great rivalry!

with the new divisions, i will admit, it will be a much, much more important game in determining who goes to the ccg...

so i will say best of luck to all and hope for some great games this yr

and i hope um and msu represent the big ten well in whichever bowl games they are invited to (i know what we will be doing this bowl season, ughhh)
