How can you tell which draft picks are truly valuable? - Grantland

In Part 1 of his NFL draft preview, Bill Barnwell has a new approach to measuring the success (and failure) of the picks.

Williams has become a productive WR for the Seahawks whereas Rogers isn't even a productive member of society.

  • Ehh there is a big difference between busting when you're the #2 overall pick & busting when you are the #10 overall pick. Plus like others have said, Williams has become productive under Pete Carroll.

Remind yourself. Nobody built like you, you design yourself.

  • End of the day production, taking into account injuries, then flake out, makes Rogers a legitimate pick.

However, the more esoteric items, like it took the NFL about a quarter into his 1st game to realize they need to double team him, makes it a little harder for me to say he's the worst WR pick ever.

As I recall from The Lockerroom in preseason before the 2nd collarbone break, Danielson talked up Roy Williams big time, then said Rogers was better, and it wasn't close.

Splitting hairs on the definition I suppose.

  • He had 68 catches and 13 touchdowns

This. The shake out after the injuries makes it hard to defend him, but Mike Williams was a horrible pick right out of the gate.
Since its based on drafts since '97, and regarding wideouts, the Lions have to be on the list a few times, not just with CRog....Except for Calvin, our picks have collectively been horrible at that position.

  • I'm not suggesting he wasn't a total bust (he was), but didn't Rogers lead the team in receptions prior to his first injury? Had he not been injury prone, he might have had a decent career (even with the pot issues, how many players in pro sports smoke up the chronic?!?).

And that was with Joey Harrington throwing to him.

Pretty much nailed it, it's easy to remember sometimes, but Rogers was great in September 2003. That Charles Rogers/Anquan Boldin duel was something else. No doubt in my mind he would have had a pretty good career had it not been for the injuries. Not saying he would have been a perennial pro-bowler, but he would have been solid.

  • So we now have the worst WR draft pick to go along with with worst OT draft pick. The good side of this is that Rogers and Mandarich had awesome college careers which is what we care about. Let's hope Maxwell surpasses Leaf as the worst QB draft pick ever.

  • David Terrell and Troy Williamson could certainly challenge for the WR spot as well.

Terrell hung on for more years but certainly never had a DC give him a 2nd thought. Williamson couldn't catch water if he fell out of a freakin boat.

Final numbers would suggest they were better than Rogers, which is what the article is after.

I have an idea, how about he has an outstanding college and pro career? You people wish for weird things sometimes.

    this plus the injuries.

he admitted that the collarbone injuries really got to him, and i know he smoked plenty of weed while he was in EL, but i honestly think the injuries made it a lot worse. exhibit B as far as that go is Mikel Leshoure. young guys who suffer devastating injuries like that kinda spiral down.

although i still feel like he was a waste of amazing talent. sometimes i do wonder if someone like coach D coulda straightened him out a little better before the NFL

  • Mr. Rogers, in his last year at MSU, wasn't working all that hard. Detroit made a dumb pick.

No they didn't. He was the best WR in the draft. He fucked up after his injuries but that on him not the lions.

  • Barnwell is a great football writer. I was actually shocked that someone (Jamal Reynolds) was a worse pick. I also did not know that Bennie Joppru never caught a pass in the NFL.

'We'? Are you french, or are misconstruing this list from '97 to also include '89? If you want to make absolute comments, then you need to expand your 'history' and there are hundreds of draft disappointments from a multitude of colleges besides msu.

Well, I thought it was a dumb pick, even before the injuries and I'm as green and white as you can get. I thought he loafed a lot in his last year where he hadn't the previous year.

If you think that then that should tell you how incredibly talented he was. Lacking effort and he put together 68 catches, 13 tds and 1,200+ yards and the Beletnikoff.
