Chicago peeps: chicago foods.

  • Went to Tango Sur this weekend which is BYOB Argentinian Steakhouse.

The steaks will not blow you away, but it is about $22-$25/steak and fills you up. Great atmosphere for 20-somethings as well.

Exactly what I was here to say. Get the vacio and enjoy. It's a little more upscale than the other places mentioned, but since it's byob you're looking at $30 each max. My girlfriend and I went there a few weeks ago and get great cuts, and they're huge. Just be prepared to wait if you show up after 5:30, especially on a weekend.

  • Fiore's Deli on the 2200 block of West Erie is the best kept secret in the city; I only know about it because I lived around the corner for years. Better than any deli in Little Italy, and cheaper too.

It's Lent. Get a pepper & sandwich (best I ever had), fresh mozz, and chocolate cake.

My brother is coming into town for a long weekend and he's a college kid, so he doesn't have a bunch of money to blow on expensive food (I don't know if he'd appreciate it anyway). But I want to give him some new food experiences that he can't get in East Lansing.

We're going to pilsen to go get tacos near my work, and we're doing Bacino's for pizza. I don't think we can make it to hot doug's, but we'll do either the weiner's circle of flub a dub chubs for a dog. But I need about 3-4 other places.

I'd like some other small/cheap/BYOB joints to get some good, unique eats...polish, italian, asian...etc. What have you got? Where have you been?

    TIA.

Ringo Sushi at Altgeld (between Wrightwood and Fullerton) on Lincoln.

Good, cheap BYOB sushi with a large menu.

  • Tango Sur has lost it's appeal to me. Way too crowded, way too dark, steaks aren't that great. Yeah, it's cheap and BYOB is awesome, but that's about it for me.

I'd rather pay another $10/ea and go someplace with better cuts of meat, and not have to ask other diners to get out of their seats so I can get to my table.

I can see the appeal for the 20-something crowd though.

  • This thread is making me a bit sad that I no longer live in Chicago. (Though if I left Portland I know I'd miss Lilikoi, Tienda Santa Cruz, and Salt & Straw as much as I miss the places I used to go in West Town and Logan Square).

Been there. Steak wasn't worth the wait. People love the shit out of that place, though.

I haven't been to perry's in over a year. That is on the list.

I've gotten a bad cut of meat there before, but it's very rare (no pun intended). I don't know what they marinate them in, but it's good, and I was going through that chimichurri like someone who goes through a lot of something in a short period of time!

How do you get overpriced? It's $25 for two big filets. You can't get a petit filet at most restaurants for that price.

  • We used to eat out every day for lunch, at least when it was above 40 degrees.

Anyone ever eat at burrito buggy, I think on van buren in the loop? The only place you can get seafood, burritos and 5 different kinds of curry (well, curry like slurry). Awesome, except there are like vertebrae bones in the lamb vindaloo. Also good is the indian place in the amtrak garage, babas village - get the chili chicken and pray to god you can make it home after work without pooping yourself on the el.

We moved back to metro detroit a year ago, I work in southfield now. I very much miss chicago, especially working in the loop.

Maybe it was just our experience. we ate there 3 times, each time the beef we had, i think we always got some type of combo sharing grill plate, was terribly overcooked and super grisly.

My wife loved it though, so i guess thats all that matters in the end.

But obviously a lot of people think it tastes pretty damn good, otherwise the waits wouldn't be what they are. This place makes sense as well because the OP was looking for places that are not going to break the bank...and the traditional steak places are going to run $42 just for the steak, with no sides, and a cash bar.

It's weird that it was overcooked. My girlfriend was going to get her filet medium rare, and both the server and I said that medium would be good, because they really do cook it to what you order, and it definitely was.

I don't dispute it's popularity. The place is always packed and people love cheap steak.
It's just not for me. I've had two bad experiences there recently, both involving questionable cuts of meat that were poorly prepared.

  • Im sticking with my statement that tango sur serves very low quality crappy cuts of meat

As our responses were directed at the OP, I mainly was going with the OP's comment of

"...he's a college kid, so he doesn't have a bunch of money to blow on expensive food (I don't know if he'd appreciate it anyway)."

Tango Sur I believe would make the cut for a college kid who can bring 2 bottles of wine and walk away with a bill under $30/person.

Anyway, back to the original point of the thread - Weiner's Circle, Pequod's, Al's Beef are all good options for quick bites/meals. There are also a lot of BYOB sushi places like Butterfly, Ukai.

One of the best BYOBs I've been to in Chicago is HB Home Bistro. Fairly small place. Great value and some different ingredients/items on the menu.

Never understood the cult of Bari. I thought it was more expensive than Fiore's, and not nearly as good.

  • Take the kid to Smoque BBQ on Pulaski just south of Irving Park. Real good, pretty cheap, BYOB.
Wiener Circle is famous, but not that good. I like caramelized onions on my dog though.
