Chicagoans: Good news. Maybe the Greatest News.

  • Maid-Rite, the 86-year old Iowa fastfood chain, is opening its first location in Lincoln Park next to the Biograph theater.

    Un. Real.

Ever had a loose meat sandwich? When I lived in Chicago between '05 and '11, I would get a hankering so bad for a loose-meat that I once drove all the way to Muscatine, Iowa on a random Saturday to get one.

I now live in Texas, but I still have my apartment at Diversey and Clark, so this is great news.

That said, I don't think the restaurant will last very long.

If you've spent any time in Iowa, chances are you've eaten ata Maid-Rite. Come June, you won't have to travel across state lines as Maid-Rite is...

    lol

I never knew Maid-Rite was such a big deal until I moved to MI and there weren't any but there were people who would say things like "Have you ever had Maid-Rite? OMG its so good. I get it every time I'm in Iowa."

Same can be said of Kum & Go though.

  • I completely understand if outsiders think a Maid-Rite sounds conceptually gross. But give 'er a try: it's delish.

Didn't Roseanne start a loose-meat diner in her show? The Lunch Box or something.

This is true as a kid I hated it. Havent had it much as an adult but it's really not bad. I prefer an actual burger but that's my personal preference not an indictment of Maid-Rite.

  • dammit all to hell, its right next to hi-tops :)

In all fairness, its a pretty damn good sandwich, though if I want wacky midwest food, I'd prefer Runza

To be fair, a loose-meat is a different taste aesthetic than a burger. Burgers are heavier, and while they may be superior overall, with loose-meats you get that nice moist bun, beef that melts in your mouth, all accentuated by onions, pickles and ketchup/mustard.

For Lansing-area people, I would satisfy my loose-meat craving at Kewpees. They will make you a loose-meat sandwich, but they really don't know how to prepare the beef.

Haha! Pork tenderloin might actually be more popular than loose-meats in Iowa. Never was a huge fan, but that's all my mom orders when we visit home.

  • My dad loved Maid-Rites, but I have never been much of a mustard and onion fan. Always ordered mine plain added ketchup, salt, & pepper. Good fries & homemade pies though.

That was my issue. I hate onions and don't like mustard. So as a kid that was like a nuclear bomb of flavors I hated.

  • Speaking of zany midwest foods, has anyone ever had a Quad City style pizza?

I haven't had one in Iowa (I accidentally/unknowingly ordered one in Germany, its a long story) in a long time but I remember in HS I liked them and would drive to the East Side with my friends on weekends to get George the Chili King tenderloins once in a while. Whenever people from the East Coast visit Iowa and ask what if there's anything they should do I always recommend trying a Pork Tenderloin.

  • I thought Leo's Coney Island was a great idea for Chicago too. Hopefullly this place fares better.

Also, Maid-Rite is going to have some competition from Edzo's which is opening up a few blocks south of Fullerton on Lincoln. If you haven't been to Edzo's in Evanston, you are missing out.

Is Edzo's the former location of the Hoagie Hut? I've heard mixed things on that place, especially since they seem to be overpriced as hell.

Its a convenience store and gas station but thats the spelling. The company that builds them is Krause and Gentle so...I guess that's where it comes from but...yeah people get a huge kick out of it. Which is funny because growing up I never thought anything was weird about it. Then did a roadtrip to an Iowa bball game and when the bus passed one people flipped out and I was like "What? It's just a kum and go....oh WAIT..."

The guy selling it to you is some white bread Iowan vs. some euro-trash Greek?

  • Edit: Meant to quote howler....

No, you are thinking of Etno's Village Grill? Wrightwood and Lincoln? I've never been.

Edzo's is like $4 for a burger. It isn't open in Lincoln Park yet, only Evanston.
It's not for everyone, but I don't think anyone would describe Edzo's as overpriced unless your barometer for burgers and fries is something with a drive-thru.
They make really good burgers, fries and shakes.

Leo's got boned in that location, I think the rent in the southport corridor is insane
