I think the principals will translate, though you can't run the QB that much. Seattle and Washington are running modified college spreads with running QBs (I'm legitimately excited for that game) , and New England, New Orleans, Detroit and Green Bay essentially run shotgun-spread attacks. The "pro-style" offense isn't necessarily the I-formation with a tight end and 2 WRs anymore.
The most legit question raised by that article is one of competition, and why it's hard to judge college coaches' ability to jump to the pros. College recruiting combined with free market OOC scheduling allows teams to only face a couple of good teams/year. If you have a big recruiting advantage (Bama, USC under Carroll, etc.), you can get away with some sloppy coaching. If you aren't challenged in the non-conf., you can run up 9-11 W seasons without having to beat anyone decent.
Take next year for MSU. State could not beat a ranked team all year and finish 9-3 (ND, UM and Nebraska are all likely to be ranked in the pre-season . . . maybe Northwestern, but their first 2 Big 10 games are Ohio State and @Wisky; that's going to hurt). With USC down, Oregon was really only challenged by Stanford this year, and lost. They didn't play UCLA, the Pac-12 South Champ.
Basically, you judge a coach on how he does when the opposing talent is equal or better than what you have on your squad. Kirk Ferentz gets NFL looks because he's working with a low talent pool and (until the last few years) had rousing success.
Put it this way: Saban's the best CFB coach in the country, but flamed out in the NFL. He's also the best recruiter in the country, something that has no effect in the NFL. Can Chip Kelly succeed when there's little or no differential in talent? I don't think that can be answered in the affirmative, and that should make NFL teams nervous.
