Chocolate Lab Breeders-price difference

  • So my wife and I are going to each buy a chocolate lab from a breeder. She has picked out a place in PA that sells them for $2500. The place I picked out mine from sells theirs for $800. Here is the ad from the local breeder

Here at Shady Lane Labradors we strive to produce quality, healthy labs with excellent bloodlines. We produce yellow, chocolate, and black English Labrador Retriever puppies. Our labs are registered through the American Kennel Club. We certify our labs hips and elbows through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. We have a great passion for the breed. We have been raising labs since 1999. We are extremely proud of our labs excellent bloodlines, full of champions. In every litter that we produce we make sure that the sire and dam have great temperaments.

I have checked their website and they offer license #'s, and are openly honest about the mom/dad's hip problems. The parents litter I am choosing from say "excellent" hips. Yes, I know it's still a lab but being that another parents litter has "good", I know they're probably no sugar coating things.

We currently have a golden and a chocolate lab, both12 years old.

I can't see the $1800 difference plus the drive time (12 hours each way) to warrant getting a lab from PA. We're not going to show or breed the dog.

I told my wife I'd let her pick her on dog from wherever she wants and that is the place she chose so if that's what she decides, that's her choice. $2000 is a lot of extra money to spend on a dog and she is starting to have 2nd thoughts. I'd love to persuade her with some real facts, info.

Any dog experts out there that can chime in?

I would never pay over $200 for a dog. There are a lot of dogs out there who need love. No reason to support breeders and pet stores taking advantage of these animals. My jack Russell/pit/Chihuahua mut was $50. Great dog, and loves just as much as a $1000 dog.

  • You are a true moronic idiot if you pay $2500 for a fucking lab.

  • We want puppies and my wife is dead set on getting an AKC line like her/our current 12 year old chocolate lab.

As a married man, I'm learning to pick my battles and I don't think I want to fight this one too much. The question/debate is if a AKC chocolate lab can be worth that much more?
She feels strongly about this so I'm not going to fight this one. My golden is actually a mix/mutt that I got for free from an old stripper girlfriend so I'm not into buying dogs but she's giving in by letting me get 2 more dogs so I'm going to let her do her thang to an extent.

  • $1800 is a 7 day Caribbean cruise for two. Dogs are lovely animals but a $200 one will love you as much as a $2500 one. Maybe more.

This. Sorry it's not the support or info you're seeking. I'm done buying from breeders when I know there are pups already born just waiting for a home. My last two mixes have been the best dogs I've ever had.

  • I got my German Shepherd with good bloodlines for 600. 2500 for a dog is ridiculous, no matter how good the lines are, if you are not going to show it.

Also, "Excellent" and "Good" ARE distinctly different rankings, as long as they're from OFA.

  • If you do not hunt or show the dog there is no reason to pay more. My chocolate lab was 400 and is AKC. I hunt a lot and she is the best dog still at 9 years old; no hip problems either.

  • Rescue a Lab. Why does your wife think it's so vitally important to have such an expensive dog, and why is she so obsessed with bloodlines and AKC registration if you aren't breeding or showing?

  • Orthopedic Foundation for Animals???? Probably a site owned by the breeders. There is no way to justify the price of one of those puppies. Just because the parent pets have a good temper means NOTHING about the pups. Buy a pup from any local breeder - make sure he/she comes with a health certificate signed by a veterinarian that the animal was examined, vaccinated (by them, not the breeder) and check for parasites.
DO NOT take the runt. Make sure you see the entire litter. Don't take the pup cowering in the corner because your wife feels sorry for it. Take the first one that runs up and jumps into your arms.

maybe because his wife is overly concerned with what other people think. cock, have you talked to your wife and told her not to worry about this dog being some sort of a status symbol? the poorest people are the happiest inside. maybe you two could try renting a documentary called born into brothels and you could see how even these miserable little fucks, with their impossible lives are still happy people inside. get it tonight with a bottle of wine. and then try to stick it in her butt.

I'd very civilly ask her why she "has" to have a specific dog.

When I am at the dog park and people get asked where they got their dog, it's very telling that most that got them from breeders are very ashamed or embarrassed. And they should be. There are way, way too many dogs that lose their lives and have no homes because snotty wives insist on a particular dog. For hunting, showing and breeding it's a different story. But for a family dog that is going to enjoy a life of lounging around and playing with kids, it is completely unacceptable to not adopt.

I'm sorry for being so harsh, but it's an issue I'm passionate about.

    Colonel Forbin

  • Good breeders are expensive. Cheap breeders are usually puppy mills or backyard breeders, neither of which you want to support. Just rescue instead, where what you see is what you get. You can get a much better sense of the dog's personality and temperament, something you can't tell with puppies.
