Chocolate Lab Breeders-price difference

You'll need to do better than that if you want to offset this dog thing.

The photo below is Dudley, a "purebred" double dapple dachshund. He is about 8 months old, very loving, potty trained, and like any puppy, loves to play. Sleeping on my lap right now.

tMisers are fostering Dudley because his breeder dumped him at the shelter. Why? Because Dudley was born deaf and has impaired vision. Not profitable enough to bother trying to sell.

Everyone who meets him immediately falls in love with him & I'm confident he will find a loving home & be an awesome "special" dog.

EdMartin'sLoan mentioned not taking the "runt". Ask yourself what happens to the "runts" when the breeder can't sell them. They end up like Dudley & few of them get second chances.

maybe because his wife is overly concerned with what other people think. cock, have you talked to your wife and told her not to worry about this dog being some sort of a status symbol? the poorest people are the happiest inside. maybe you two could try renting a documentary called born into brothels and you could see how even these miserable little fucks, with their impossible lives are still happy people inside. get it tonight with a bottle of wine. and then try to stick it in her butt.

one thing I know about my wife is she's not concerned about the status symbol of her dog. She loves dogs and just wants them to be healthy. I think that's why she wants to have "proof" that they come from good bloodlines. Especially labs who have hip/joint problems.

I'd very civilly ask her why she "has" to have a specific dog.

When I am at the dog park and people get asked where they got their dog, it's very telling that most that got them from breeders are very ashamed or embarrassed. And they should be. There are way, way too many dogs that lose their lives and have no homes because snotty wives insist on a particular dog. For hunting, showing and breeding it's a different story. But for a family dog that is going to enjoy a life of lounging around and playing with kids, it is completely unacceptable to not adopt.

I'm sorry for being so harsh, but it's an issue I'm passionate about.

good points and this thread has opened my eyes about "my" dog that I'll adopt. Don't know if it will change my wife's mind but you guys have given me a lot to think about. I think I need to go to a strip club or go do some manly things b/c my heart is getting jerked around opening links to sad dogs with no homes and tearing up and shit. Might go do some p90x or go spank my monkey or sumthin.

Even if your chosen breeder is in fact "reputable", dogs selling for $2500 each are the reason why "backyard breeders" & "puppy mills" exist. The lure of an easy profit. You may never buy a dog from these scumbags, but you are definitely contributing to the problem.

  • The tri-colored beagle-looking dog is Molly. She's a Treeing Walker Coonhound mix who was taken to the pound after she had puppies. She spent almost 3 months in the pound before the employees begged a rescue to take her. She was next in line to be euthanized.

The black dog is Myles. His mom was a whore of a golden retriever that gave it up to the neighbor's chocolate lab.

    They are both great dogs.

This is the rescue we got Molly from. I know it won't help Davidson much, but in case anybody is interested. The owner of the rescue has placed around 70 dogs in homes since November, when she started. She even travels to Lebanon and brings dogs home from there. Strays over there are beaten in the streets and nobody really gives a shit about them.

  • Anybody who buys from a breeder rather than rescues should first be required to go to the local pound, select a dog in the breed they prefer, handed a shotgun, and forced to shoot that dog in the face. People should be made to understand the consequences of their actions.

You are a true moronic idiot if you pay $2500 for a fucking lab.

At $2500K they better be that variety of lab and they better be be good at it for several years. $2500 per means who knows how much more for insurance on each pooch plus all the vet bills no matter how little (free) to your $2500 number.

Unless you are already in the rarefied air of national champion breeder/buyer circles finding buyers for your high end pups might be tough.

We want puppies and my wife is dead set on getting an AKC line like her/our current 12 year old chocolate lab.

As a married man, I'm learning to pick my battles and I don't think I want to fight this one too much. The question/debate is if a AKC chocolate lab can be worth that much more? She feels strongly about this so I'm not going to fight this one. My golden is actually a mix/mutt that I got for free from an old stripper girlfriend so I'm not into buying dogs but she's giving in by letting me get 2 more dogs so I'm going to let her do her thang to an extent.

as a married guy I understand picking battles but this one you need to stand your ground on considering the $1800 difference. Hell, I think you're overspending for your $600 option but if you spend $2500 it better shit gold every few months.

If you want it as a show dog, multiple litter breeder or for competitive hunting then I could begin to consider possibly justifying that amount of money but if it's just a pet then hell no. My parents got 2 labs from families to bred them, had the papers and all, and they were excellent pets and terrific hunting dogs that my dad trained himself, one for $200 the other for $300 (a fox red, which is harder to find, thus the higher price). One lived to 14, the other still alive at 13.

I too am passionate about going the rescue route - my wife and I donate to many rescue orgs and our cat is a rescue and if we could get a dog it would also be a rescue, there are too many good animals who got into bad situations and deserve a good home. Many get into rescue organizations because of impuse buys, like after movies come out featuring a dog and idiots run out to buy them, e.g. pugs after Men in Black, then realize they have no clue how to care for them and think pets are disposable creatures. Give a dog like that a chance.

Stand your ground here, for the love of Kate Upton!

  • Wow. $2500 is a hell of a lot of money - even for a purebred. My pure bred Golden cost me $1100, and I thought I over paid. You're going to get 2 at $2500 a piece?!!! If you're spending that much, don't come to a message board asking for advice.

no, her is $2500 from a place in PA, mine is $800 from a place in NC

update: her mom and brother have also told her that the price is ridiculous and she will not be getting a lab from that place.

  • I've had a pound puppy, we've rescued a pup that was abandoned....but we elected to go with a breeder for our current dog (a chocolate).

The breeder is local, about twenty miles from our house.

We spent $500. The breeder asked us some questions about what kind of dog we wanted, (in house, no hunting, three active young boys)....he offered to pick for us and we agreed.

Suki (named after Datsuk by my 8 year old)...has been wonderful, not overly barky, content to be inside most of the day, great in the water when we make it to the cottage, and great around the kids.

Chocolates are common enough that you shouldn't have to spend $2,500 to get a great dog.

  • I wouldn't pay more than $200 or so for a dog and it would always be a rescue dog. Even if I wanted a purebred, no way in hell I'd pay $2500. Just watch your local shelters, the type of dog you want will turn up soon enough.

our chocolate barked a lot, but that was our fault. My mom had the brilliant idea to teach her "speak" as her first trick and well, she spoke alright! My parents wised up with the red, he does not bark much at all. It's all how you train it as a pup.
