College Football Playoff

  • For those college football nutjobs like me who can’t stand the offseason, this might be for you. With all the talk of a college football playoff in the news lately I decided to get creative with the only simulation tools I have: a PS3 and NCAA 12. Using the final BCS regular season standings for seeding; I have created a 24 team playoff (24 teams because the BCS standings doesn’t extend to 32) that I will simulate to see who virtually would have been the national champion. First off, I am in not in favor at all of a 24 team playoff. This is not conducive in reality. My playoff starts on December 17 (two weeks after the conference title games) and extends until January 14th. The Top 8 seeds all have first round byes and the higher seeded team will host until the semi-finals. The semi-finals will be played at the Orange and Sugar Bowls. The championship will be played at the Rose Bowl. I have gone to great extents to make this simulation as legitimate as possible including roster changes due to injury or suspension and even accurate weather conditions at the site where the games would have been played. Check it out here: http://short-sideoption.blogspot.com/ , it’s a good source of entertainment in the off-season! Michigan State is the #17 seed and will travel to Athens to take on #16 Georgia in the first round.

  • @SpartanBaller: Well, I am a lead aircraft simulation design engineer for the United States Military. Is that enough? Stay classy.

@Misterray: Exactly, this was just something I started while my wife is watching American Idol haha...I'm not a fan. Just something for entertainment.

  • We're Michigan State - We have more than just football to enjoy.

  • @Cmdr: That's excellent. I prefer College Football, so that's why I stuck to doing a College Football simulation. Has Michigan St already held their Jr day? I think ours (Nebraska's) was last weekend. I saw where Michigan landed like 11 commits at their Jr day......yikes.

  • 16 team playoff makes more sense.

    Victory4MSU

  • @Victory: Yeah, 24 teams would be a little much in reality. Personally, I would love to see like a 6 team playoff. Give the top two teams byes (that way those top spots are still coveted through the regular season). The BCS meetings ended yesterday, and there's alot of chatter about change. The arguement seems to be now about the degree of change. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with.

  • Good God. A plus one, four-team playoff is all college football needs. I'm a diehard college football fan and actually prefer MSU football to MSU basketball. I don't like the BCS and I think I'm in the minority when I say that college football doesn't need anything past a four-team playoff. The regular season (which I love) is going to be an absolute waste of time with anything more than that and a four-teamer provides the most fluid transition from the current model.

I don't even think a four-team playoff was needed for this year. The two best teams met in the championship game and I say that with a significant amount of confidence. I'm a protectorate of the regular season. I don't want a 3-loss team playing for a national title when an undefeated team went through their regular season undefeated and their only reward is a "first round bye".

@ Lunch: I tend to agree with you, the fewer teams included in a playoff, the more important the regular season stays. One thing I love about college football is every week matters just as much as the previous, regardless of your opponent. The reason I say a 6 team playoff I guess is because the Oregon/Stanford situation this year (Oregon beat Stanford and won the Pac 12 but was ranked lower); but realistically there is always going to be a problem with who gets in over who in any format. You make a good point.
