Community college grads out-earn bachelor's degree holders

  • Nearly 30% of Americans with associate's degrees now make more than those with bachelor's degrees, according to Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce. In fact, other recent research in several states shows that, on average, community college graduates right out of school make more than graduates of four-year universities.

  • I wonder how much of that is affected by the number of older graduates of CC who are doing it for the purpose of furthering their careers..there are a lot of people already in the workforce who do night school, etc..

    A little bit, and there are a lot of four year degrees that never pretend to want to make you a ton of money whereas community colleges give useful trades. A lot of friends of mine who graduated with human biology, psychology etc. and didn't get into med school did a quick nursing program at LCC and made around 40k while they retook the MCATs and whatnot, much better than what their four year.

  • Some CC grads deserve to make more because they made better choices. I know several people with bachelor degrees working in production roles at factories. Hell, one place I worked for had an assembly temp bid on an internal Financial Analyst position that was posted. He had an MBA from a private college and turns out life just kicked him in the ass too many times, so he had to take the work he could find. My fuckwad boss ended up giving the job to another manager's daughter who has an associates degree. So Mr. MBA got it in the ass once again.

  • This should not surprise anyone. What exactly did you think people with a BA in English, liberal studies, history, social studies, gender studies, music performance and so on were earning fresh out of college? Big bucks? Hardly.

  • Title seems ridiculous since it states 30% do. I would have guessed it was like 25%. So 70% of bachelors holders make more money. And I'm pretty sure the acreage lifetime discrepancy is still hundreds of thousands of dollars on average.

    But yeah don't go into liberal arts if you want any $$$

    This. What are the lifetime earnings. I didn't go to college to make money in my twenties, could have done anything else for the last four years and had way more money than I do now 6 months into the workforce, I want to make it down the road.

    Thats sick for the guy who makes 75k fresh out, I'd love that, but what about in 10, 15, 20 years?

    Pretty much this, lots of CCs offer direct entry programs for police, firefighter, EMT (need more training for full I think), dental hygienist, medical billing, etc which can be pretty good paying jobs 2 years out of high school.

    They might out-earn them initially because of the technical skills they have (and there are a lot of crappy 4-year universities), but their opportunities are limited over the course of their career.

  • The great thing about those reports is that they only count the people who actually have a job. If you factor in the fact that people with college degrees have a much lower unemployment rate then the 4 year degree blows away an associates. Look at the link - says associated degree holders have a much higher unemployment rate than college degree holders.

    And a lot of those former 2-year degrees are going to 4-year degrees - like RNs for example. I believe police and firefighters are also going to 4-year degrees as well.

    And then there is the fact that I bet people with a 4-year degree are much better and managing the money they do make versus someone with a trade degree.
