Community college grads out-earn bachelor's degree holders

  • BH Spartan said...

The great thing about those reports is that they only count the people who actually have a job. If you factor in the fact that people with college degrees have a much lower unemployment rate then the 4 year degree blows away an associates. Look at the link - says associated degree holders have a much higher unemployment rate than college degree holders.

And a lot of those former 2-year degrees are going to 4-year degrees - like RNs for example. I believe police and firefighters are also going to 4-year degrees as well.

And then there is the fact that I bet people with a 4-year degree are much better and managing the money they do make versus someone with a trade degree.

4 year degrees for 2 year degree careers....that is the wrong direction.

Haha. EMT does not belong on that list.

Like I said, they are not fully trained and it is some sort of apprenticeship program. Get all the way though and those guys can make some serious bank.

I completely agree. Honestly I think it's just a way for schools to make more money. They should be trying to streamline things as much as possible.

    Serious bank?

My buddy is a paramedic and before he moved in with his nurse fiance, he was poor as shit.

  • If you can do plc programming / work with setting up manufacturing equipment you can make some good cash out of a trade school program.

What level of training and what city?

  • I have an Engineering degree from MSU so these reports are irrelevant to me and can suck my wang.

    Logik

  • Kudos to those people. I have a MS degree and they're all making more than me. Hindsight is 20/20

"In fact, other recent research in several states shows that, on average, community college graduates right out of school make more than graduates of four-year universities."

So it really is just starting out when people are like 20-22 and only in certain states...

Right. That's what I got too.

I'd look at lifetime earnings to judge the difference. Sure, maybe they occasionally make more initially, but I've got to think that the ceiling is higher for those with four year degrees.

    Training to....be a paramedic?

Classroom, clinicals, and an exam to get a licence. He worked as an EMT for a while and as a firefighter. Kalamazoo area.

  • FYI, all those that went to become nurses (R.N.), are having a real hard time finding jobs right now. Hiring is declining and employers are looking for those with experience, not new nurses.

Ok, you are the expert. Please tell me which "EMT" careers will put you in the "makes bank" category.

My friend is a Paramedic. Where does that rank on the EMT hierarchy?

The top I guess, the specialized ones look like they can clear cheddar. Flight paramedics get paid(but they are put in danger flying in those helicopters...the medical choppers crash at an alarmingly high rate).

    I'm an NREMT-B

I took the course while waiting for my respiratory care program to start.

Also have 4 years working in a level-1 trauma center.

I'm not trying to claim to be a "super expert" on all salaries in the EMS world, but I do know that my buddy make almost exactly 1/2 of what I make per year. Which is alright because his job is rewarding and mine is a pile of shit.

  • I think part of it too may be that CC students are more likely to actually have to work for it, either by working two jobs while going to school and avoiding student loan debt; this translates into a respect for a job, any job, and working hard at it to move on up. Then you compare this to our current generation of university students that had helicopter mom and dad arguing with their teacher since Pre-K about how special and gifted their kid is and had no regrets of signing away tens of thousands of dollars in student loans; these damn kids think they're entitled to high paying jobs that require them to just show up. no

    NotNuckyISwear

  • anyone else find this comparison laughable and damning to the integrity of the article????

"A two-year community college degree, at present full rates, costs about $6,262, according to the College Board. A bachelor's degree from a four-year, private residential university goes for $158,072."

Did you read the article? It says that CC grads, on average, initially out-earn bachelor's degree holders but, over the course of their careers, people with bachelor's degrees make half a million dollar more than people with CC degrees.
