Comp is Dogging Out Shane Morris on Staudt!

  • Iknowmorethanu said...

Exactly....the kid has talent no doubt, but is raw.

He really struggled big time in trying to qualify for the Elite 11 QB camp. He went to one of the southern tryout camps and stunk it up. But, better there so he can learn and develop. He has the ability to be sure. Once he learns some of the nuances, I think he will be fine. As far as losing in the playoffs and watching him cry.....lame. Pandering to the mostly MSU audience I am sure.

Agree. Even on an off day the #1 pro style QB should at least be top 5 at a regional elite 11 camp with few elite QB prospects. He also did jack squat last high school season.

Honestly. That was a show offer. The staff knew he was going to UM. Just like offering Cass kids or Wyatt shallman. You keep doing it as a sign of good faith to the high school coach. Not saying they wouldnt accept a commit but they know there is a .00001% chance of landing the kid so they throw out an offer.

You don't offer a kid in April of his sophomore year as a "show offer". Come on.

Comp's ship is sinking. The Mag is a horrible product that has gotten worse, rather than better, in the face of increased competition for online MSU information. He'll say anything to try to drive traffic to his site. (Well, anything other than basketball recruiting updates).

That is funny because the same thing is happening IMO to the Michigan site as well. Seems like both MSU and UM's Rivals sites are getting scooped a ton by 247 and Scout.

Yet if he came to MSU Comp would never say a word of that. Over the top fanboyism at its worst. Really not necessary.

Do you really think he would rip an MSU commit? Of course not. Where is that going to get him. But dont act like he pans every single one of their commits. He calls it like he sees it with their "elite" recruits.

He was just praising Pipkins the other day and said he will be the best true frosh defensive player in the BIG this year.

    This.

From a business perspective...I think Comp should get out of Rivals and change his business to be a news and blog site only. Get rid of the message boards entirely - they take too much of he and his staff's time. It's the worst message board and the members are generally mean spirited.

From a selfish perspective...I think they should not change one thing because operating that site keeps shitty posters like Ozymandious off this board.

  • Is it sadder to dog a 17 year old kid in public or via message boards/twitter?

hoke- to alter or manipulate so as to give a deceptively or superficially improved quality or value.

Yeah you do. Especially an in-state kid with tremendous early hype and good physical tools.

No one in the entire state of michigan ever thought Morris was going anywhere but UM but you have to play the game.

The MSU staff isnt going to act like UM did with Reschke and not offer because someone is a huge UM lean.

His high school coach said Morris had so few yards because the team ran the ball a lot. He said this year he expects Morris to have over 4000. The big thing for Morris is his accuracy issues.

When he is going to commit elsewhere in May of his sophomore year that's exactly what you do to try and slow down the process.

He's got a different name over there...something like Fights With Vim or Spartans Fight With Vim. Something like that...

Over 4k yards. LOL! Good luck with that. Is he throwing to to the top 3 wr in the country in a Div 8 league? He might have one solid wr in a league that is one of the toughest in the state.

If he somehow pulls that off its more than impressive .

I think it's worse on the radio. I actually kind of thought it was messed up that he caled out a high school kid for crying in the playoffs when his team lost. Comp is supposed to be a "journalist"....Or at maybe a "reporter". Either way, I don't see how it benefits him to blast Morris on a radio show other than playing to homerism.

Ok, fine. That makes zero sense to me. You don't offer a kid the Spring before his junior year because you want to look good- you offer him because you want him on your team.

Is Comp's ship sinking? I've never read Spartan Mag but I know some people enjoy it.

He is on Staudt every week which is a pretty nice platform for his website and publication. Think of all that free advertising that he gets, and all those Staudt listeners flocking over to his site.

I was a SMag subscriber for over a decade, but recently came over here exclusively. Dorsey, PK, Comp, Rico, et al offer some good insight and their actual game analysis is pretty good, but the guys over here are beating them to the punch with nearly every story and the actual message board is pretty much for shite these days. The only threads that really get any traction are those either bashing or defending Mike Valenti. Comp seems to be fostering that "controversy" in order to drive traffic. It has backfired IMO. Plus, Rivals sucks. The mainboard is a bunch of SEC fanboys stroking each other off and they barely bother to even evaluate midwest talent.

If you dont offer you look like a butt-hurt bitter school that isnt offering the supposed top QB in the country bc he is a lock to your in-state rival. That doesnt play well with high school coaches. They would never have a shot at another neutral WDS kid again.

There is no doubt that MSU wanted Morris. And Shallman. And the Cass Tech kids. Probably knew when we offered though that we had a .000001% chance of them committing to us. Doesn't hurt to take that shot, and at least let them visit and maintain a relationship with the high schools coaching staff. Don't think there were any delusions about landing them though.

First off, I do not believe De La Salle is really a Div. 1 powerhouse.

Second, like I said, MSU was the first big school to offer, before the hype machine really got going. That is why I am doubting your theory. You offer someone to avoid bad press when the kid is already getting a ton of press. MSU's offer was what put him on the map.

Of course they wanted Morris. They wouldn't offer someone they didn't want just for show. That said, Coach D offered knowing the chances he would land Morris were almost nil.

I am going to partially agree with Green Monet's rationale with the Cass Tech kids from last year- they made it known how mad they were when they did not get MSU offers initially ,and soon after Dantonio offered. I think it is plausible those offers were at least partly to ward off bad press.

Delasalle is a pretty good program. Always very solid. You also have to look at who they play. Their record is never going to be great because the catholic league beats up one another.

It put hin on the map. Not sure about that.

Interesting. I also think that the Rivals model is pretty dated. The fact that you can't view content in the threads unless you're a member is strange. How do I know that I want to be a member if I can't see the content?

I didn't know that they were milking the Valenti thing. Kind of sad that the mighty Rivals board has become that.

I never paid much attention to who was scooping who on most news. I just figure that it gets out eventually.

To be honest, the only real content worth reading on here IMO is Jack Ebling and Red Cedar Rumblings. The rest of it is pretty lackluster. They used to do video previews and recaps of the games.... They took that away without any notice to the subscribers. Other 247 sites do podcasts.....This one doesn't. The electronic/multimedia side of this site is pretty poor. Although maybe that is not their focus as much. I am also impressed by other sites game analysis and comprehensive breakdowns.... This site doesn't really do that. Kind of disappointing. I do feel like 247 is still growing though so who knows what will happen in the long run.

If MSU knew the kid preferred Michigan, which he did, and a Michigan offer was coming soon, which it was, MSU would want to get in an offer.
