Computer dorks: Is there any PC that compares to Mac Book?

  • I'm looking at the entry-level Mac Book, the 13" screen $1199 model. The reason I'm looking at the Apple is because of the quality. It's that simple. I want something that's going to last and isn't a piece of shit, like all the Dells and other PCs I've shopped. Is there anything out there, for the price, that would be similar in terms of quality? I need a small, portable laptop.

Apple has the best build quality laptops out there right now because they don't cut corners to reduce costs, but if you want something that looks like a Macbook, has better specs, and is cheaper look no farther than the company that is both supplying most of Apple's hardware AND ripping off their designs at the same time...

Same specs as the $1200 MBP for $825. Also has a better graphics card and an actual HDMI port. They look pretty similar as well.

    Interesting. How is the quality?

    LOL at Apple "quality."

As someone who's gone through 5+ macbooks/ibooks, including a ton of iPods, their quality is no better than most.

Yes, they're more stylish, and they "feel" a bit more solid, but overall, it's not like we're talking a Mercedes vs a Ford Focus.

And you better add a couple hondo onto the price of the Macbook for Applecare, otherwise you'll be treated pretty poorly if (when) something breaks.

In my experience, it's usually the keyboards, the a/c adapter, the a/c adapter connection, the battery or the display inverters that go bad (although I don't think they use the display inverters anymore on the unibody macbooks/macbook pros).

Just don't be delusional thinking you're going to be getting an insanely engineered laptop just because it's a macbook. The case is nice, but it's still got 95% of the same components inside.

Edit: I'm typing this on a 13.3" Macbook Pro aluminum unibody

I second that. When something does go wrong you're at the mercy of Apple.

Toshiba is making pretty good things these days. I still have a Dell from when they were popular, so going on 6 years now. But I got a new Toshiba last year and it's a beast! So pay $1200 for a Macbook or $800 for a PC, that was an easy choice for me...

  • Why do you need a laptop? Buy an iPad instead. All the programs are there for legal work. There's even a credit card reader program that allows you to swipe a credit card so you can collect fees from your clients. If you need a keyboard, you can buy one for $80.00.

  • If you want to pay almost twice the price for half of the speed and memory, Apple is the way to go.

  • I believe Acer just came out with a nice ultra book that might be worth looking into.

Personally I'm a huge fan of OS X which is why I'll always go with a Mac. The little things like multitouch gestures, not having to click on a window to scroll, and multiple spaces make all the difference for me.

This, I always build my home desktops myself so that limits me to PCs but I have usually two or three laptops at any one time as well. One in the garage for Service apps and what not, one as a media/data center, and one as a general around the house use. I can tell you I have had Apple laptops cycle in and out of my home PCs and they are no different than anyone elses laptops. They last about the same amount of time, have similar issues when things go wrong, and things go wrong at the same rate. The biggest difference I have noticed with Apples vs PCs is you are at the mercy of Apple if you need to get something fixed or for software support and you pay twice as much for half the machine. I am to this day completely baffeled why there is a perception that buying an apple you get a better PC. The PC is the standard for a reason, everyone uses it, and all software is designed for it out of the box. I am not saying Apples suck because they don't, there just is no real difference if you look at it objectively and not with Apple colored lenses.

I will say I have not gotten into the tablet use because I currently don't see the benefit for my personal use habits but from what I can tell the iPad looks like it might be the most user friendly but again I have not done any research so that is just a very tentative first glance.

This. I like the solid feel and consistent quality of my 13" MacBook Pro but the kicker is the OS. It's very easy to use and isn't filled with all the bloat of Windows 7 programs made for specific brands. The easy to use track pad is a great tool. Also, in my experience Windows computers tend to slow down over time even when used with Spybot and virus programs. After over the year the MacBook still flies.

Because an iPad is a walled garden. It has no file system that you can work with. It does not allow you to install applications of your choice. It has no external storage nor does it allow it.

It, simply said, is a slave to a mother ship. Useful in many ways, but not your main computer.

You need a real computer for real work.

    Your advice is ill-informed..

  • The main question...do you need a CD drive? Alot of the new ultrabook PCs don't have CD drives, but the designs are fantastic and have great battery life.

Some of the new ultrabooks you should consider:

    Acer S3
    Asus Zenbook
    HP Folio 13
Samsung has several new models that are pretty good

Never had luck with Dell products, wouldn't recommend them. As far as durability goes - if you're more likely to drop the computer buy one with an SSD. SSDs can handle obsurd amounts of Gs. Also, as far as case durability - almost every company has adopted either Apple's aluminum case design or use some type of composite material.

Might be worth waiting a little longer for the new processors before you buy a new computer (source: I work for a tech company).

Good advice. Go with a ssd for sure, and asus' ultra (zenbook) is one of the best. Very nice screen, 1600x900 if I remember right. I think I read that a new version is on it's way.

One other thing: In my experience ATI integrated graphics are better than Intel, but I may be out of the loop with the latest chipsets. I do know that I pulled the gpu out of my HTPC and the onboard ATI4200 (maybe 4250) played HD media flawlessly.

Oh, be aware of what ports you need. Ultrabooks often lack some typically standard (the zenbook does not have a ethernet port for example)
