Congratulations to Keshawn Martin - Signed 4 yr deal w/ Texans

  • Keshawn was drafted #121 overall by Houston Texans in the 4th round.

Last year, the #121 picked signed a 4-year $2.44 million contract with a signing bonus of $396k.

  • Nice....he will be very good for them if used right. From where the kid came from, it's an AMAZING achievement. Congrats!

  • These contracts are formalities and no guarantee he makes the team even this year. That said, I expect him to make their squad and make an impact if they use him right.

I don't see him not making the team. He's a 4th round pick, a great athlete, and Houston cut Jacoby Jones. In addition, they have gotten very little production out of their slot receivers lately and Martin is also an excellent returner.

For salary alone, most picks up through the 6th round make the team for at least a year.

agree. I think the fact that they cut Jacoby Jones right after they drafted Martin speaks volumes.

Jerel went to a better team, and BJ went where he should be playing from day one, the dolphins are very thin at WR. How do you define best fit? All of the above?

    Jahlil Suggs

  • He gets $396 less any agent fees.

I've heard some former players say an agent isn't really necessary in rounds 5-7

I agree. It just seems like a lot of people think he is going to definitely bank the full contract. He has a good chance of doing so but there are no guarantees in the NFL.

Worthy to GB wasn't a good fit

I'd rather he went to a team where he could be a 4-3 DT

And BJ will be catching passes from Tannehill or Matt Moore.....yikes

Keshawn is the perfect compliment to Andre Johnson

The 400k is his to keep either way. They aren't dropping that kind of coin on a guy that they plan to cut.

Who's houstons QB? Schwabb, Yates, or Leinart? Not exactly all world there either. I forgot the packers ran a 3-4, are they gonna have Rell play DE?

Jerel will be a 3-4 DE in the Packers system. HOWEVER, with the amount of attention that will be paid to Clay Matthews and most likely Nick Perry, he will get his chances.

But does he really have the speed and quickness to come off the edge?

He's more of a run stuffer

    Uh....

3-4 DEs are not light and fast like 4-3 DEs. Much different responsibilities. He will be counted on for not only stopping the run, but also to tangle up OL so the blitzing OLBs will have a free path to the QB.

That said, Jerel Worthy was probably one of the quickest DTs in the nation last year. Ask Braxton Miller how it felt to be sacked the moment he turned around to hand off.

Why is it that people think 3-4 DEs play "the edge?" They don't. If you grew up in the era of LT, Tippett, Swilling, Derrick Thomas, etc., you'd (not just you, T-Pain, there are lots like you) never forget that it's the OLBs that come off the edge in a 3-4.

Ok if they don't come off the edge then where do they come off of?

Between the tackle and guard most of the time. The OLB comes from the tackle's outside shoulder the way a 4-3 DE does. The OLB also has outside contain rather than the DE.

Still hate the Worthy selection by GB

Worthy is a prototypical 4-3 DT

They can be lined up at the 5-tech (where your DEs line up in the 4-3), or the 4 or 3, depending on the down. I think Worthy's going to get his chances; he won't be playing 2-gaps all the time in GB's scheme.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

With how often the Packers use their 2-4-5 nickle package, Worthy will be playing a ton of DT this year, as the Packers never really replaced Cullen Jenkins.

No doubt guys get moved around a lot more these days than they did going back 20 or so years. I expect him to spend most of his time in the 4 or 3 gap if they play him at DE.
