Considering moving to London - need help

I disagree, I think the reaction is just another example of the low lifes who populate this place on a regular basis, hate themselves and their stations in life, and use a message board to vent their frustrations and inner self loathing. Now, go make a fucking friend.

I've never encountered a greater collection of low self esteem misfits in my life. That's why it's so funny to watch these tools go off.

right Sooooo....Odds that "lincolnrules," who "registered today," is actually a schtick Tanfan used to get people to question the veracity of the self-reported income of a new poster? so that he could then bitch about "the low lifes who populate this place on a regular basis, hate themselves and their stations in life, and use a message board to vent their frustrations and inner self loathing {sic}"?

I'm going with 50-50. That may even be low.

Yeah. You're right. Because spending all my free time on here is my main priority in life and pointing out the insecurity of posters like you who have no life is all I live for.

Considering the cost of even "decent" housing is much higher, taxes are much higher, medical care that you can trust and don't have to wait for costs more as well as fuel if you feel compelled to own a car in London, you would need at least 300k to approach maintaining your current standard of living. Ballpark it at 186k pounds/year. Keep in mind your housing will likely be much less spacious and comfortable than what you now have. VAT is up to 20% on many items. You need to consider if having "International" experience is a key to moving up with your company. Is this part of grooming for a promotion? If so, bite the bullet and do your time over there even if the salary bump isn't much more than your getting now. It is a vibrant city and while it's no Lincoln, you should be able to find something to do. And if you go, treat yourself to a great burger and a couple of steaks prior to leaving. British beef is crap and they overcook it to boot.

But he gets to live in London and not Nebraska. My salary in Seattle would clearly go further in Lansing, but I wouldn't be living here.

If you want the exact same sized house, etc- stay where you are. If you want a more interesting life- move.

this is probably the best piece of advice in the thread..

as for having to own a car... you don't!! if you are not staying in the long term the london transport system works perfectly fine.......

  • Not to mention that as a US citizen, you are required to pay US taxes where ever you live in the world, regardless of were you earn your money. Some countries do have an income tax treaty that "might" offset some of this. I think the first $90k overseas is tax free, then after that you are likely to be paying double tax. I lived in Thailand for 4 years working for Nike - they provide tax equalization. Living overseas on a local package can appear much better than it is if you don't know all of the real costs and details. PM me with any questions.

My company offered me a lateral job outside London. I dont have the details on pay, relo etc........What would be the equivalent pay in UK to maintain same lifestyle/savings? thanks for any insight...

You need to get with someone about the tax/currency ramifications of such a move:
    1. The Euro is still stronger than the $.
    2. The COL in the metropolitan areas of Western Europe, makes living in LA or NYC feel like a bargain
    3. The Britons use that HP sauce on EVERYTHING, wtf is up with that?

London is more expensive than NYC due to VAT.

OP, are you getting an ex-pat package? I've done a lot of work in London and a number of my colleagues have spent time there on long-term assignments, so I may be able to offer some advice.

It's a great city. I'd certainly move there if the situation was right.

  • Fuck London. Move to the north - Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool...that's where it's at. Better yet, the Yorkshire Dales.

  • So it's been a few years since I've lived there, but a simple way to think about it is that the Pound to Dollar ratio is usually anywhere from 1:1.6 or even 1:1.7. However, price wise - it's 1:1. So for example, a book here in the U.S. might cost $10. In the U.K. it will cost 10 pounds. A McDonalds happy meal might be $4 here. It'll be 4 pounds there. So it's definitely more expensive to live there. In addition to housing, transportation will be a huge cost. If you live in London, you will need a tube pass. Avoid having a car, as with fuel (crazy expensive), congestion fees (ridiculous), and parking (cheaper just to abandon the car and get a new one), it makes no sense whatsoever.

We loved the city. I'd love to go back sometime. Great times.

    Question re: cars:

I've thought about an extended trip back to england and would love to drive on the "wrong" side of the road. Is renting a car feasible there? I'd live and die by public transit, but you have to do it once. Any suggestions? And please don't recommend me a GeeWhiz or anything like that.

Yeah, did it many times. If you need an automatic, be sure to request one, because they are not standard (no pun intended). Other than that, it's not a whole lot different than anywhere else. I'd recommend getting something small. A lot of the B roads are narrow and you do NOT want a people carrier or anything like that.

The first time you do it you'll be all nervous and hyper-conscious, but it's really not that bad. Rounds-a-bouts will take some concentration. Otherwise have fun with it.

  • Taxes are very high in UK and the cost of living is pretty high. Couldn't believe how expensive stuff has become over there when I visited earlier this year. Find an affordable flat. Don't need a car over there. Might be better to live out of London and commute in by train. Cheaper outside of London.

My advice is to PM me when you're going to be renting (they say 'hiring') the car here, and I'll be sure to stay off the roads on those days. scared

Seriously, though ... it's good advice to avoid anything like a full-size sedan and get something smaller (e.g., Ford Focus, VW Golf). One reason is the size of the roads and parking spaces, especially if you're going into the countryside. The other is that petrol costs the equivalent of around $11/gallon at the moment.

You'll get used to driving on the left pretty quickly, but you'll keep bashing your hand on the door while you get used to shifting gears with your left hand. It's all right, though -- it feels like someone else is driving.shake
