....and Nebraska. A quote from the Chancellor at Nebraska after they learned that the University had been bumped from AAU membership in 2011, after being admitted to the B1G.
""All the Big Ten schools are AAU members. I doubt that our application would've been accepted had we not been a member of the organization."
I hope this can put to rest the importance of AAU membership vis-a-vis B1G membership. I can almost...not fully, though....understand the exception that was made in pursuing Notre Dame. They don't pretend to be a major research institution, but are an outstanding undergraduate institution. If I recall correctly, everyone has to take Calculus as part of their bachelors program....which says a whole lot. Bet Calculus isn't part of some school's General Studies program :).
Give it a rest, dude. Football teams and television sets are pretty much all Delaney cares about in conference expansion.
I think ND is not part of AAU for religious/moral reasons, something about the type of research that AAU supports that conflicts with Cathoic doctrine. They are well qualified to be an AAU member. It is a completely different situation than Nebraska.
1. His name is Delany. Not sure why that's so hard.
2. Delany doesn't make the call. The Council of Presidents does and AAU membership is an important criteria. Notre Dame meets the standards for AAU membership, but they don't join for religious reasons, which is why there's an exception in their case.
Delany makes the call on the product on the field and how it is managed. We clearly didn't make him enough money in 10-11, so he made us pay the bill this year. I am certain of this.
