Just got back from postgame interviews and Izzo said Payne hurt his back before the team left this week. Said it happened on a tip drill while no one else was around him. He did some work in practice yesterday but not a lot.
"I didn't even know if he could play, to be very blunt and honest with you," Izzo said.
Izzo also said he thought it bothered the team because Payne was so clearly hobbled. Had to be helped by assistant video coordinator Doug Herner just to walk from the bus to the team hotel when MSU arrived Wednesday night.
"It was a poetic justice way to end a crazy year," Izzo said.

Injuries are like viet cong, they're everywhere for MSU.
Payne is a lot tougher than most give him credit for.
The RCMB...is one of the most awful, alarming, inappropriate, disgusting, and offensive msg boards in the history of the internet.
Dude is going to be a BEAST next year. BEAST.
Pretty much sums this year up. We could never get everyone healthy and clicking at once
he is going to be our Cleaves. That dude is HUNGRY. You can see it in his demeanor on the court....he was our best player down the stretch and clearly has bought in to everything about being a true Spartan. Dude is going to graduate and lead us to glory next year.
The plague of Injuries in both Football and Basketball was ridiculous.
Seriously, who hasn't been hurt at this point?
