Creighton is one of my favorite Non-MSU mid-major teams. I was looking forward to watching them play Duke Sunday night. But early on, it was easy to see the refs were going to call a tight game and it completely robbed the Blue Jays of any offensive rhythm.
I am typing this with about 4 min to go in the Puke game because you know we will foul late to put those sons of bitches on the line. But to work off my frustration, I did some research during the round of 32 and Sweet 16 rounds. (I did not do this for the first round because given the wide seeds and some games being lopsided, it would skew the research in my opinion.)
ROUND OF 32
Average Fouls per Game in Games Not Involving Duke....33
Louisville had 24 fouls called on them
Total Fouls Called.....46
Fouls Called on Creighton 26 (Highest of any team in this round)
Average Fouls per Game in Games Not Involving Duke....32.5
Oregon had 22 fouls called on them (Highest of any team in these 7 games)
Total Fouls Called....41
MSU has 24 fouls against them
WHAT A BUNCH OF FUCKING SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Creighton is a good squad. For the season, they averaged committing 16.3 fouls per game. Against Duke it jumps up by TEN.
MSU averaged 15.9. Against Duke it goes up by EIGHT.
What a fucking coincidence. In both rounds, Duke's opponents commit more fouls than any other team in the entire round. And these are teams tha tthrough the course of the season, barely average enough fouls to get into the bonus per each half. Yet against Creighton, Puke was in the bonus in the second half with 11:54 to go!!!!! Forget any chance for a comeback.
OK fine. I won't say the refs are why we lost. But let's look as these stats. And I bet you can find other correlations to support the assumption that Duke gets the calls. Why? Are the opponents so spooked they play outside themselves and just randomly foul more? Bull fucking shit.
This is why I don't care to watch Big Ten Basketball. You know most of the time the home team gets the whistle. I almost rather watch the A-10 or Missouri Valley so I can at least feel like there is some suspense.
Fuck Duke. Fuck College Basketball Officials. Fuck the NCAA. Fuck the Fellate Coach K Committee. Hey guys, isn't 4 titles enough?
I used to like Duke back during the Laettner-Hurley years. But now, the whole fucking kiss Duke's ass institution makes me sick.
Then when we should foul we did not/could not.
Nicely researched rant. +1 to you
Living A Spartan Life!
Yeah .... that's another thing. In several games this tournament, I have noticed teams that are behind trying to intentionally foul, and the refs just watch and wait until the 2nd or 3rd hack occurs before they finally blow the whistle.
Jay Bilas was right. Instead of operating as independent contractors, the NCAA needs to do something to invoke standards and improve the quality. Get rid of the old blood or at least limit their workload.
I used to ref IM games in college. I kind of wished I got started with the MHSAA back then just to be part of the game and make some cash. Argh!!!!
My kid has a stuffed zebra in her room. SInce it has stripes, I am going to grab it and choke the stuffing out of the inaminate bastard.
Eh, the other teams in the ACC have been bitching about the 'Dukie Calls' for years....
Duke wouldn't win crap if the refs weren't constantly sucking them off.
Nίκη για MSU
You mad bro.
The refs took this game over. In the last 12 minutes, there were 5 total field goals - 3 by Duke, 2 by MSU. In the same time span, there were 20 free throws shot - before MSU started fouling late.
If I was independently wealthy, I would spend my spring and summer in my man cave watching everygame with Puke and Wusconsin to see how many flops they have per game.
If I produced college basketball telecasts, I would also include a graphic showing how many flops these team have compared to others. Puke and Wusconsin make World Cup soccer teams look good in the flopping department. I can almost see one of Bo's goons go down next year, grab his leg like it got chopped off in a farm machinery accident, get wheeled off on a stetcher, then at the next whistle sub right back in the game. Just like that Brazlian chick against the US in the women's World Cup.
As much as I have a never-say-die attitude, be it in sports or in my career, when the refs had given us our 7th foul so early in the second half, it was a repeat of Creighton-Duke.
I hope every player and every coach on that team gets a raging case of syphillis.
What was your first fucking clue Sherlock?
What about the in bounding pass? Duke got 6 seconds and then was allowed to call a time out!!
In fairness to duke they put a lot of pressure on teams because they play very physical down low and take the ball to the hoop (good slashers). On top of that they also are sharpshooters.
when they jump out in front of teams they overcompensate.
The refs appeared to be favoring duke though. The non 5 second call on duke was especially bad considering they just called one on MSU minutes before.
You could see where the ref slowed down his count on the 5th second count.
Also the charging foul and appling was weak. That is at the very least a play on. Also if it isn't then they should have called plumbee on a charge when he ran over nix but they swallowed the Whistle on that one.
MSU just got real bogged down on offense and they kept trying to run the offense through nix when I would have ran it through Payne or appling.
it became patently obvious when we got to 8 with 3 minutes to go that the refs were going to seal it for Duke. every possession for the next 2.5 minutes had a foul called in their favor with the shot clock under 5 seconds (the Harris one might have been 7 or 8). Nothing changed in what we were doing defensively. We weren't trying to foul. but out of nowhere they would just whistle a foul and put them on the line rather than letting them take a contested shot at the buzzer. it was so fucking blatant I couldn't believe it. The last one on Appling was laughable.
Even worse, however, was the fact that there were no less than 6 balls out of bounds off Duke - CLEARLY - that were given to Duke. one late they said was off Harris on the sideline. Another in the corner with Harris on Curry. a few others throughout the game. but I kept track and even discounting the usual 50/50 calls that go to the defense there were SIX legitimate balls that should have been our possession and resulted in i think 10 points (2 3s and 2 2s). That is absurd.
And then Plumlee got his fourth foul and all of a sudden there are 3 offensive fouls on MSU in 90 seconds. 2 away from the ball. the one on Costello was laughable. He ran down the court, Plumlee was in the middle of the lane so Costello put his back to him and started pushing towards the block as Appling brought the ball up - NOT EVEN TO HALF COURT YET. All he was doing was being the first guy to the block to get position. ole gray hair throws an emphatic Offensive foul gesture that i'm sure made TV Teddy proud and gave the ball back to Duke. incomprehensible. Costello's first two fouls were nonsense as well. And i've been saying it for months, but for whatever reason, whether it's Gauna or Costello whenever the first of them comes in they automatically have a foul called on them within 30 seconds. EVERY TIME. Usually it's two within 2 or 3 possessions. it's bizarre and always completely contrary to how the starters were allowed to play. it makes no sense.
so yeah....all of that sucked.
In my research, (And if I had a grant from Trevor...I could do more and publish a paper about it) I noticed several times in reviewing box scores that Duke's opponents frequently would get two or three fouls called against them in a very short time span. Even is another foul isn't called for several minutes, you know the opponent is going to be off their norm. I saw that defensively in the first half when we got three fouls in 45 seconds.
Fuck you. In fairness, the average NCAA referee has about a quart of Coach K's cum in his stomach.
The game is about 3 point shooting and dunking now. The Izzo 2000 national championship blueprint no longer works anymore. We play really tough D, but we don't have the shooters on offense to stay with a team put together like Duke. We have players on scholarship who are not scholarship worthy of being on an elite program which MSU is, and while we are an elite program, we aren't going to beat thoroughbred teams like Duke scoring in the 50's. Seth Curry's shooting...along with timely help from the refs...buried the Spartans tonight.
"I love March!" - Tom Izzo
Great rant... Wish I had this at the bar as I was sputtering to friends why I frigging hate Duke. Wish I had the stats to back my arguments.
Crap.... Just hope Payne and Harris stay. We will gain redemption next year....
Spartans ...committed to bring Paul Bunyan home in 2013.
I also see that Mike Scyphers was an official in this game.
He did the Cal-Syracuse game which had 40 fouls. Second highest of all games not involving Duke in the Round of 32.
Officiating was garbage. Duke was the better team.
Guess what happened on these plays? Nothing. Just good defense by Duke. No whistle needed.
This is just what was actually caught on camera. This sport is being destroyed by this kind of incompetence.
Rants are one thing. Researched rants with the facts are another. Good for you. +1
Love the research. What it misses is stuff like a ball clearly going out of bounds off Curry's leg, yet Duke getting the ball and getting a 3 point play by Kelly seconds after the in bounds. Three points they got that they shouldn't have because it should have been MSU ball. How many times does this happen per game? How many points does Duke get per game from BS like this? That was the only time I noticed the direct correlation of points off a missed OOB call. It was so blatant it was hard not to notice.

It is ALWAYS a great day to be a Spartan!!!!
The three refs for tonight's game:
All average between 33-36 fouls per game. Yet tonight, we get 24 called on us. Smells fishy.
Vim -- noun: robust energy and enthusiasm : VITALITY
"It definitely got physical early.
Duke guard Tyler Thornton lassoed Nix around the neck as he lunged for a block and missed, knocking Nix hard to the floor. And Nix gave the referee one of those "You've got to be kidding me?" looks.
That look grew more and more familiar with each missed shot and questionable referee call as a reasonably close game grew into decisive outcome."
dook gets ensured victory by the refs, and the media spins the narrative that suits them. The AP write-up says the match-up lived up to the hype. WHAT? That game was HORRIBLE to watch, the refs absolutely ruined it.
pretty much dead on....I've said for the last 5 years or so that they have completely changed the way the game is called.....it's SO different from when we were dominating it isn't even funny. Basketball is truly a physical, grueling sport. It's also the hardest to officiate of any sport with hockey and football closely behind it. That said, if you watch an NBA game the crews ESTABLISH EARLY ON what will and won't be tolerated, the players adjust, and the game progresses from there. Last night and in MANY college games, there just isn't any consistency, flow or common sense with these turds. It's getting as bad or worse than football honestly.
Which was was he? The gray haired guy?
