If it was me, I know I would have driven down there with at least 3 of my friends. So that's four kids, you save $600 total. That $600 would pay for whatever motel the four of us would stay in together for 2 nights, gas and potentially even some of our food if we stayed at a crappy Motel 6 or managed to get a deal.
or The Rocket, Bettis, Bob Crable, Golic, Joe Theismann... or Digger & Friends (Shumate/Carr/Dantley)
actually ND gives very few academic scholarships, most of their aid is need based, much like Ivy League schools are. It isn't an issue of "slipping through the cracks" it's an issue of ND making it a priority to give the poorer kids an opportunity. When my wife's sister went to Harvard she only had to pay room and board. Meanwhile her now husband paid everything.
However, who does get screwed are the kids in the middle; those whose parents make just too much to get aid but not enough to easily afford the $57K a year all in cost that it takes to attend ND.

What did UND have to do with this?
While I believe this alum's generosity could have been better used in areas other than making life a little more confortable for those who are already very fortunate, it's kind of hard to hate on the University for this one.
A cool gesture would be for students attending the game make a donation to charity if lieu of the discounted ticket - but then they'd probably be perceived in a negative light so it's probably a "no win" situation.
"Anonymous donor" = ND, which buys zilly PR
Didn't you see Rudy? I lost count of how many times his family was at the country club..
