Just watched MSU vs. Maryland on the NCAA Vault, the game right after we shut down Roberson. Does anybody remember any details about his recruitment? I didn't follow recruiting quite as much back in 2002. I was happy to see Davis beat him out for Mr. Basketball and see us shut him out when we smoked Florida in Tampa.
Location: Mumbai, India
I remember stories of Coach Izzo going to his 8th grade football games.
MSU lock. MSU leads the whole way. Convinced Charles Rogers to go to MSU.
Tommy Ammaker gets hired at U-M, starts talking U-M.
Ultimately picks Florida.
Head scratcher all the way around.
There are no mysteries in recruiting if you assume everyone is cheating.
Yeah, that was pretty dark and depressing recruiting time for Michigan State. Roberson was plan A and appeared to be a "lock." A sudden flip for Florida was followed by a heavy recruitment of plan B Dee Brown (Illinois), followed by Plan C Jarrett Jack (Georgia Tech), which resulted in the signing of juco recruit Rashi Johnson (ungh).
With Marcus Taylor going two and out, I don't think Izzo had "his" point guard in place until Drew Neitzel.
The Roberson saga was also followed by decommitments from Wilson Chandler (DePaul) and Eric Devendorf (Syracuse), making it a truly awesome period to follow Michigan State basketball recruiting.
Of all of the guards Izzo recruited back then, I thought Jack would've been a perfect fit. Rebounded, played D, controlled. Oh well.
I thought Izzo pulled Thugendorf's offer.

It is ALWAYS a great day to be a Spartan!!!!
Between Roberson and Brown, Jack is the one getting paid to play in the NBA as well.
Interesting note about Jarrett Jack, is that his official visit was scheduled for 9/15/2001. Not sure he ever made it to campus for his visit. Not sure how much this was a factor ultimately, but it didn't help.
Devandorf and Roberson took the cash. I think that's the era when Izzo was thinking most about going pro. Sick of the shadyness.
I tend to believe this. Devendorf moved to Oak Hill and then wound up at Syracuse. Definitely something shady going on with Roberson as well.
Rexrode article that mentions Roberson some but just a good recruiting article in general.
Busy? Day 4 was supposed to be an overview of AAU basketball, its issues and the possible solutions. Then Chris Grier Luchey responded to my...
Devendorf had a problem with his high school coach prior to going to Oak Hill - IIRC, there was something of a physical altercation (push and shove) along with some other ugliness. Seemed like his recruitment was neglected/abandoned, though I can't recall if his offer was pulled or not.
Jack's visit wasscheduled really close to 9/11 - he never flew up here as a result, and we missed the window of opportunity on him. He was definitely the "one who got away."
My memory is sketchy, but there was some thinking that Taylor's presence (and success) made Roberson cool off on MSU - a potential playing time issue was rumored to bother Roberson. Then Taylor split, leaving us in a complete lurch. Again, take this with a grain of salt, because my recollections are fuzzy, but it seems like this stuff was in play.
I remember that we also struck out on Keyon Dooling...so close!! so close!!
I remember Ozzy posted about this on the old board as he had some responsibility preparing for the visit. I don't believe Jack ever rescheduled.
Not enough Dar Tucker going on in here.
Awesome contributions in this thread, thanks guys.
