Here's the skinny: I'm upgrading from my iPhone 4 (Verizon) and was wondering if I could keep using it as a iPod touch once it stops receiving service. I figured the tech savvy people of tRCMB have more experience than a few unclear answers I can find via google.
Would hate to have a fancy paperweight and thought it would be nice to use on wifi, music at the gym, etc. without a plan on the network.

Idk about on CDMA, but I have an iPhone 3G that works great without the phone capabilities. Just had to take the SIM card out.
Yes, you can do it. I'm using my old 3GS as an iPod touch. Only problem is battery life, because the damn thing is so old.

I use my old iphone4 as an ipod touch. Obviously, I can't access the interwebs without WiFi but it comes in handy as a music player and time-waster.
What questions do you have?
Yes.. My old Verizon iPhone is now functioning very well as an iPod touch. Does everything but make calls through a carrier like Verizon but it can still make emergency 911 calls. I think it can use Skype to male Internet calls over wireless too but I haven't tried.
Thanks, y'all. That's really the only question I had. I don't know a lot about phone technology and got confused when I looked online. That makes me movin on to a different phone a lot easier.
Nope. Won't work. I'll give you $10 for it.
I'm not an expert on iPhones, but I got a guy who is. Let me give him a call and see if he'll come down and take a look...
I have my 4 permanently plugged into my car. Totally worth the 200 or so I could get for it to not have to take my current phone in and out.
I did exactly the same thing and gave it to my 5yr old niece.... it will work for almost everything with the exception of "facetime"
or you can send it into amazon/gazelle/verizon, etc. and get $$$ back for it
I think this is what I'll end up doing. Just recently got a stereo that has a USB port so I'll probably just leave it all hooked up out there for my jams
My old ATT 16 gig 3G is plugged into my car all the time. Not worth a damn thing to sell since the screen is demolished but plays music just fine. Took it on a business trip to mexico last week and surprisingly got over 10 hours with the battery still half remaining. pretty impressive considering it didn't last for shit with the network turned on towards the end of when i used it.
