"FBS culture is infiltrating FCS. Appalachian State has fired legendary head football coach Jerry Moore after two eight-win seasons. The 73-year-old had led the Mountaineers to seven Southern Conference titles and eight playoff appearances the past eight seasons. The run included three-straight national titles from 2005 to 2007, six top five finishes and, yes, the win over Michigan.
After a 215-87 record, 10 Southern Conference titles and three straight national championships among 18 seasons in the playoffs on a 24-year resume that Mountaineers’ fans will likely never come close to seeing again, Moore made two mistakes — he got old and couldn’t maintain impossible expectations he created with his previous successes.
Moore, after staying for 24 years at the FCS school, had wanted one more year to go out on his own terms. Apparently, those rabid FCS boosters were concerned the Southern Conference would leave them behind."
Sad... he certainly earned the right to go out on his own terms, IMO. He obviously made ASU relevant in football, and a legitimate contender every year. The trouble with App is their Chancellor is probably their biggest fan- he seems a bit Jerry Jones-ish (again, my opinion). Even if they have slipped in the last couple of years, by firing him you miss out on the chance to celebrate the career of a coach that has done some big things and brought a lot to the university. It probably didn't help that they lost their last game (2nd round of playoffs) on a blocked extra point attempt in overtime. Still, if I were an alumni, I'd be pissed about it.
Where did you see this article, from what I've heard, they make it sound like he's "stepping down". This sounds pretty negative.
"The announcement came via e-mail and teleconference on Sunday in the politically correct language of the times, where “will not return” and “we came to the decision” supposedly creates a softer landing than “fired.”
Sorry, but when you show up for work wanting and expecting to stay employed and are told by your bosses that you are no longer welcome, that’s fired."
I like how you think Bob.

It is ALWAYS a great day to be a Spartan!!!!
Well.... If can happen to king Bobby (Bowden), it can happen to anyone!
That's why you should never show loyalty to a school when you are a coach. He should have jumped after the Michigan win to a better job.

Why? This guy was still winning football games and championships....
Bowden was hardly coaching at that point.
You've made more football related posts in the past week than you have during the rest of my tenure on this board.
tRCMB - Visit at your own risk of being disgusted.
apparently App ready to make move to FBS in the near future..that could be a consideration
So you're saying Jerry Moore is unemployed, and may need a job? Maybe a nice little OC job? In the big ten? I'll take his 105 year old play calling over our situation...
Apparently the coaching seat at Appalachian State was HOT HOT HOT
Funny promo video for Appalachian State University (ASU)

FSU hardly had a program prior to King Bobby.
I guess, but after the SEC figured out that Florida was worth recruiting, you never heard of Florida State again. The days of recruiting the best athletes i the state and having them play man coverage all damn day are long gone, and he couldn't adjust.
I don't know a single thing about this situation, but if Bowden and Paterno have taught us anything it is that when a football coach in his 70's says he just wants one more year to go out on his own terms he never actually wants that. He wants one GOOD year so that he can justify 5 more years. That way he doesn't have to retire/die.
The part not mentioned in the original post is that the AD claims that he and Moore agreed that this season was going to be his last one. People are crying over this guy not being allowed to bow out gracefully, but if you buy the AD's story, this was that season. It wouldn't be surprising if he never had real plans to leave anytime soon.
Jerry Moore said this morning that he would love to have had the opportunity to coach at Appalachian State one more season.

Exactly my point. That is what these coaches always do. They always believe they are one season away from another great one and that if they can hold on for one more they will be in a position where the AD will see that they HAVE TO keep them because they are SO DAMN good. The same ultra-high competitive drive that makes them great also makes them try to hold on longer than they should.
I saw it and I was deeply disturbed
The Internet peaked with this video.
