This is a great article from Seth Davis. He had a few coaches/assistants from each league talk anonymously about the contenders in their conference. There's a fairly interesting take on MSU in there, but the best part by far was about the Badgers:
"Wisconsin: I don't really respect the way they play. Jordan Taylor likes to run and grab you, and then throw his head back and try to get a call. If you set a pick, they take a dive. They cheat the game. Everybody raves about this defensive juggernaut, but that's bull. They dribble the clock out and mug you out of the building. Part of the reason they lost to Cornell and Davidson is because when you get into the tournament, refs outside the Big Ten don't fall for that."
You are a hardcore college basketball fan. You don't want palaver and platitudes, clichs and coachspeak. You want to know what people who are in the know really know. You want the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the hardcore truth.
Good take on the flopping vadgers and the shitty Big 10 refs that let them get away with it.
Was just going to post this. Awesome!
I would venture a guess that this mystery person's view pretty well represents how the whole conference feels about Wisky. The comment about MSU is definitely true though re: not having good enough outside shooting, teams might try some zone, etc.
Thanks for posting a great basketball article. Considering most are Freep articles that make me vomit, I loved it. I thought the truth was uncanny and I found it spot on.
+1 for everyone in the thread
"Stats are for Losers." - Pat "Nardawg" Narduzzi
Can't argue with a single thing said about MSU. Actually, it just made me proud of our staff.
"… They scout the hell out of you. If you play them you have to bring a couple of new sets, because they're going to know everything you run. They don't have a lot of tricks. If you can't stop them they're going to run that same fricking play over and over again. …"
That is a darn article article in it's entirety, pure truh about everyone, refreshing read.
And sure, it's 6 years late, but NAILED uw bb.
That section on Wisconsin should be pinned to the top of the board every November-March.
There are no words for how much this delights my minuscule black heart.
Marriage is like flying with kids, if the flight had 500 connections, never ended, Ted Striker were your pilot and you ate the fish.
Eff Bo and the goat he rode in on then sacrificed
This article is worthless because it does not cover the true powerhouse programs.
I tried to email this article to Bo Ryan. But he had his "vacation alert" set up because it's already the month of March.
From the other thread, does Seth Davis have a bow?
This article seems accurate on all of the teams that are tournament bound from the major conferences. Wisconsin obviously has a hard time if they are getting called for fouls and the offense they run this year seems to be even worse than what they have done in the past.
There was also a comment on there how scUM could beat teams if they are hot, but could also lose to inferior opponents if they are not hitting from the outside.
Everything said about MSU seemed spot on.
Remember, this is what coaches/assistants from around the league said. Not Seth Davis.
I also liked the take on Ohio State:
"I think this team became a fat cat. The Buckeyes got a little arrogant early...Jared Sullinger is a great college player, but I don't think he's a tough kid. He flops a lot."
...and then wore its face as a mask.
I hope Bo Ryan reads this article.
The RCMB...is one of the most awful, alarming, inappropriate, disgusting, and offensive msg boards in the history of the internet.
Would love to know who's comments those are. Can't imagine that it's any of the MSU coaches.
When I first read it, I skipped the introduction and started reading the Big Ten stuff. I thought maybe Seth Davis was going rogue and just laying the truth out there. I was actually a little disappointed when I found out this was not the case.
This made me laugh
"Nix has really committed himself. Last year I thought he was fat and not worth anything, but he's really in shape and running the floor."
I wanna know who said that
Me too; that's why I posted that lol. [asiansmiley]
Just to make it easier, Davis probably contacted coaches from the teams that wouldn't be critiqued.
Great read. It's like a Readers Digest media guide to the Tournament.
