His contract counted 3 1/2 million against the cap. Significant, but not a huge number.
Sacks aren't the only statistic. How many hurries did he have? How many running yards were gained over his side. Simply, he was not worth the money paid.
He was supposed to announce tomorrow but came out of his stance early.
Who scores sacks? If it was Detroit media, wouldn't be shocked if they were attributing some of his sacks to other players.
Backus was reliable, as in showed up to play each and every Sunday. Was he any good? He had a couple decent years over the course of his career, but all in all, I would say at best he was average. Lions for years have had so many holes on the OL that trying to replace him was not a major concern, and for many years that were tied to him financially. I think Backus' biggest problem was that he was drafted a 1 pick later than Steve Hutchinson. Hutch was one of the better lineman in the league during his time, and the expectation was Backus would be the same. Never happened. Never came close.
Plus, he's SCum. FJB.

The fans do it all the time.
Watching with most any Lions fan offensive plays go like this:
Pass or run?
Pass: Sack? Interception? Completion? Incomplete?
Sack: Must be Backus's fault.
Interception: Was Stafford hurried?
Yes: Must be Backus's fault
No: Man, they didn't bring much against Backus.
Incomplete: STAFFORD SUCKS!
Run: We would have gotten more if we replaced Backus.

Is this for real? Did Stafford just score on him?
Yeah people drill this offensive line a ton (and they deserve it concerning run blocking). But they were statistically the best offensive line in the league at pass protection last year (sack % )
Isn't Stafford the most hit QB over the last several years?
If you could find a link to support that then I would be very surprised.
Backus allowed 1 sack last season ONE.
A Michigan grad is really the only thing I can hold against him.
Guess I should've read this second page before I posted

It has nothing to do with Fox. If Fisher is there, you take him, period. He'll be a much better LT than either Reiff or Fox, from the looks of him, and there's no such thing as too much depth at the tackle positions.
It also wouldn't hurt to take a look at Fox's injury history with Detroit when thinking about whether the Lions should take a franchise LT if available at #5.
Thank you, Denicos.
"Average" at the most important spot on the OL is pretty damn good, especially when you've got it for 12 years. Ask any Bears fan what they would have given to have Backus over the last decade instead of Pace/Omiyale/Williams/Carimi/Webb (are you shuddering yet? you should be).
People who trash Backus couldn't name a better one at his price tag to save their lives. Guess we'll find out if Reiff is the real deal this year, unless the Lions (miracolo) somehow manage to score either Fisher or Joeckel.
Why does that make it okay for him to suck?
While this is his first retirement, he was responsible for the premature retirement of several QB's with his matador style pass blocking ability.

He didn't suck. As left tackles go, he was average. The problem is that there were, in any given season, three to four bigger problems on the o-line that didn't get called out nearly as vociferously.
they would have nothing to do with one another. right now Fox is penciled in as Gosder's replacement at RT...Fisher would take Backus's spot at LT w/ Sims at LG and Reiff at RG. That's a nice mix of young talent and experience on the OL.
Backus never sucked. He also was never great. he was a solid, dependable player who started 187 straight games in the NFL at LT. That's INSANE. I never loved the guy, but he it could always have been worse. he was never less than average and usually good. to have that at LT for 12 years is something any NFL team would take in a second.
Lots of talk he and Luke Joeckel will be gone by the 5th pick. Not having a top QB (or 2) in this year's draft is really going to screw the Lions. This is an awful draft at the top, and that makes solid left tackles the position of choice.
I would rather have Raiola retire.
+ zillys. For all the Backus haters, check his stats. He wasn't an all-pro, but he wasn't dog meat, either. Also, amazing that the guy started so many games in a row--never injured until late in his career. He was solid, for the most part, and pretty decent other times.
Solid left tackles aren't growing on trees, watch what happens in the draft. Detroit will be very lucky to land one of the top 2.
I just defended the guy, and you made me crack up.
I don't see any chance both of these guys make it to 5. KC has their QB, they SHOULD take an OL after going defense for a few years. One of the other 3 teams would have to look there as well, with the lack of big playmakers at the top. What has been the verdict with Jarvis Jones and the neck issue?
I am guessing that if one of the two top OTs is available, Det grabs him, otherwise they are good with Fox & Reiff and maybe add an OG or C in the mid-rounds.
And btw, he graded out as a left tackle in the draft.
