No one is impressed.
Yes, but only If you want a clan of inbred hillbillys. Arkansas sucks and that will never change.
Some info I've gleaned from people supposedly in the know (take it with a grain of salt, it's not verifiable at this point). BB told BA that he was considering a "couple" SEC jobs 2-3weeks ago. So, this didn't blindside BA.
Wisky big balla donors were on the outs with BB for the last couple years. Seems he burned some bridges with his "smug" and "arrogant" attitude and more than a handful of boosters were simply not going to support the program financially to the level they had previously enjoyed. BB, was not well liked, personality-wise (this can hardly come as a surprise to anyone) by many in Madison whose opinions carry weight.
BB made a couple snide comments earlier this season about the media and Wisky fan's lack of support for him as the head man in Madison. His ego (which is as large as his ass) was bruised to the point where he was then actively putting out feelers by way of his agent to gauge his perceived "value," externally in the college landscape.
All the coaches that went with Chryst et al last season had an impact as well. I exacerbated a perceived internal rift and to a large extent alienated BB and didn't do him any favors in exposing what many had assumed- he's not great fun to work with because of his demeanor.
All this really was kept under tight wrap by BA. Though he wasn't blindsided by this move, supposedly, everyone else apparently was. Even the assistant coaches.
What is great though, is how for so long we have heard nothing from Wisky fans but their defending this clown's antics and uncouth demeanor. It was so easy for them to overlook what every other fanbase could so easily see. Instead of him being a pompous buffoon they celebrated and perceived him to be full of swagger for Badger Nation, and everyone else was a hater who was simply jealous of his success. Finally, from this news we are actually seeing the scales fall off the eyes of these same fans and they are seeing there is a lot of validity to the "outside" perception.
BB is a rather poor in-game coach. He has "led" a winning program at Wisconsin though and his (in terms of record) success can't be denied. Although it can very easily be mitigated a bit, because he undeniably was the benefactor of a lot of situations that gave him rather uncommon advantage (such as finishing 3rd in his division and "winning" the B1G, etc.)
I don't like BB because he's an ass and I don't think his image and character are good for the conference as a whole. I find him very unprofessional and just flat out unpleasant (as a side note, I find Bo Ryan to be incredibly unpleasant by personality as well, but he is even more professional and respectful than BB) I simply do not much respect the man, and I'm in great company in that opinion. I won't be sad to see him go, and it's not because it gives us some perceived competitive advantage against Wisky that we lack while BB is HC. I don't think having that smug, meatheaded-baffoon on camera representing our conference on the the biggest stage is good, for it, or us.
I'm just kinda psyched that I wont have to see his fat-ass on the sidelines with his blank stares at the play clock while mouth-breathing into his headset anymore. Though watching him lose nearly all the close one's did provide some entertainment, though it seemed to do nothing to deflate his ego.
I really hope the Wisky fans jump on board finally and start seeing this guy for the clownshoes he is and has always been.
Hopefully we can now turn our attention more fully now, to why Wisky's abominable brand of basketball is also bad for our conference's perception. Hopefully 1943 calls and makes him an offer he can't refuse and he leaves the conference as well.
I think we are making progress.

+1. Exactly how I feel about the guy.
If you can do a half-assed job of anything, you're a one-eyed man in a kingdom of the blind.

Had bielema already passed alvarez for the all-time wusconsin wins record?
Vim -- noun: robust energy and enthusiasm : VITALITY
Not unless you can squeeze 119 wins into 7 years Beilema was there (17 wins per).
Beilema did win 65 games from 2006-2012
i heard half a blurb that Brett was leaving and all I could surmise was that he was fired for getting caught at something....it's inconceivable to me that another school would want him to blow games for them in crunch time
he'll be sorely missed
actually, my thought was "damn....now they might actually win."
are you likening this to a RichRod to um situation?
We are the SPARTANS and They are NOT!!! [spartan 2]
He sure didn't blow either of the only 2 Big Ten championship games that have ever existed. But I know it makes you feel better to degrade a coach that is far more successful than anyone we have had at MSU in decades.
leave moosey alone. he feels inferior every day
Had MD taken over what he took over, MD would have gotten us to a BCS bowl every year. bb has never built anything, never tore up the recruiting trail, never elevated the program any higher than what he inherited. And, in fact, he blew multiple big games and his demeanor chased off the coaches who largely gave him the success he got.
Overrated as a coach, underrated as an ass.
He should have held out for Tennessee.
Its five o'clock somewhere.
Looks like Alvarez will coach the rose bowl.
If Les Miles can win a NC at LSU, Bret can at Ark
I'm here. Was busy at work today, but when I saw the news I spent most of my time in this thread below. A lot of people surprised for the same reason you guys are. Worse program, much tougher competition (it's been said he "wants to win a championship...not sure how it's easier there), a program in shambles, etc. My thoughts are
- It's a big loss for UW, and I'm worried about what will happen with the recruits and assistants
- Those who claimed they're glad he's leaving are fucking stupid
- Those who claim he's a moron, meathead, idiot, etc are fucking stupid (including many on this board who said it)...the guy has brought a bunch of 10 win seasons and multiple B1G chapionships, and multiple Rose Bowls to Madison.
- He's got a great team coming back next year
- His next two classes are very talented (yes, the small class this year WAS due to the available schollies...not some issue with people not wanting to sign with UW...lots of recruits coming in in '13 and '14)
- I think they need to get someone signed relatively quickly, Chryst would probably be my choice
- I don't want him to coach the Rose Bowl
- I feel worst for the players
- He brought a lot of accolades to Madison, and I'm thankful for that...he took over a good program from Barry (the couple of years before Bret were not impressive) and took it to another level
- I don't really care how he does at Arkansas
- He'll have a hell of a lot harder time winning at Arkansas than he would have if he stayed at UW...those who say he was "afraid because OSU is going to be good" don't know what the hell they're talking about. Why the fuck would he leave UW if he doesn't think he can win and then go to the toughest division in all of college football?
- I doubt Barry coaches the RB, but I would be ok with it if he did. I'm sure it will be an assistant, but I expect they'll have someone in place well before the game
BB to Arkansas - confirmed
We would kill for Bielema's track record. Stop lying to yourself.
Its been confirmed that Barry will coach the Rose Bowl, how actively I don't know yet.
It aint easy bein cheesy.
What the heck are you talking about? He's been coaching there for 7 years, so the last three rose bowl teams are his guys, as are the next two talented classes coming in.
As for what he took over, yes, it was an established program, but it was hardly a juggernaut. It was on an upswing, but coming off some underwhelming years.
2001 Wisconsin 5–7 3–5 T–8th
2002 Wisconsin 8–6 2–6 T–8th W Alamo
2003 Wisconsin 7–6 4–4 T–7th L Music City
2004 Wisconsin 9–3 6–2 3rd L Outback 18 17
2005 Wisconsin 10–3 5–3 T–3rd W Capital One 15 15
No he can't.
The guy was a major tool box but you can't deny the facts. I don't know why people are so quick to discount his record at Wisconsin. It's not like he came in and went to a Rose Bowl the next year with all of Barry's players. If MD had done the same thing we would be putting a statue out in front of SS.
Source? I see nothing on Buckyville.
I wouldn't be against it, and it would be historic to see Barry take the field and if he won it it would go down in history as one of the biggest wins in UW history.
Wouldn't hurt ticket sales, that's for sure.
To the person that asked earlier, his wife is from Wisconsin.
I think it really comes down to money and opportunity. He's striking while the iron is hot.
