True to form, Rexrode with a longer article about the "fight" than the game and sure enough, it is the article on the Sports main page in freep.com, not the game recap.
The article is pathetic. It is entirely a justification for writing the article itself. Somehow the Penn State news turns out a more objective piece than Rexrode, color me surprised. Then he has the nerve to call out Izzo on whether this would be a story 10 years ago and says, unequivocally it would be. This is comical as it is widely known the fights players would get into back in Mateen's day and yet it never showed up in the paper.
Rexrode is turning into another blue wall hack.
I'm more interested in the details of the fight, particularly so we don't have to hear theories how it was actually them v civilians or whatever, than a W over hapless Penn St.
You probably watch a lot of cable news and E Hollywood Story too.
The only "news" is this: Payne and Dawson scuffled before the game so each sat first half.
After that, doesn't matter.
Sorry, but beating PSU is "dog bites man",
The players throwing a few punches is "man bites dog".
Or, maybe you're a bitch
Sorry, but for those of us who went to college, a fight with a roommate who needles us too far is not man bites dog. It is no bite at all.
Or, maybe you milk Rexrode's dick like half of the clowns around here.
Truth, he was awesome and objective at LSJ. Now he is typical Detroit sportswriter.
was his article at least easy to ready or was it in world war 2 style telegram form - one sentence paragraph at a time?
dude is one of the worst writers in journalism. I feel like I should be saying "stop!" at the end of every 1 sentence paragraph.
That's the thing, it was an easy read with real, multi-sentence paragraphs.
It was just a mistake;
I didn't mean to let them take away my soul.
Am I too old?
Is it too late?
No, you're right, this is very worrisome and certainly multiple threadworthy.
Wow! Were they fighting over a female corpse?
Michigan plays a convict - blue wall non story
MSU players/roomates/friends horse around and cause damage to hotel - 20 page article investigative report.
Nothing new here.. we are thugs
This site is pathetic. The obsession with the school in AA has reached epic proportions. Just get the hell over it and you'll lead a much happier life.
LOL. Shocker that you'd be upset about Joe's blog (by nature, an opinion piece) not being objective.
Like it or not, the pregame altercation is news, especially on a team that has not identified any leadership. ALL of the papers ran some article about the fracas. Sure, every team has fights, but not often do they result in the police being called or damage to property that needs to be paid for. If the police aren't called, this "fight" doesn't get nearly the publicity, if any. If Mateen busted MoPete's lip while slamming him against a wall, putting a whole thru a hotel wall, causing someone to call the police, it would have been news back then. Several hours passed with everyone wondering if either/both players would be arrested or have charges filed. It's news. I know you don't like it when anyone writes anything negative about the Spartans. I'm surprised you haven't called for Graham Couch's (Lansing State Journal) head for saying "Michigan State’s Adreian Payne and Branden Dawson behaved like immature knuckleheads Wednesday morning." He might as well move on to one of the Detroit newspapers.
Formally Brian T.
Yeah this guy isn't a troll..
Bottom line is that this "story" would've never gotten the run that it did if it happened at U-M, OSU, ND, Alabama or pretty much any other high-profile program. Our beat writers try so hard to be "objective" that they end up the other way.
I was annoyed by the DNews this morning because of the overwhelming negative tone of the headlines on almost every MSU story:
- MSU’s Payne, Dawson exchange punches before game at Penn State
- Michigan State foul shooting proving to be liability
- Drake Harris still committed to MSU but considering Michigan, others
- Adreian Payne, Branden Dawson fight at hotel, sit out first half of Michigan State win
- Michigan State guards give Tom Izzo reason to worry despite win at Penn State
- Ball screens cause problems for Michigan State
If UM had gone to Happy Valley, played more than half the game without, say, Hardaway and Robinson, and won by 9 points, I guarantee we'd be treated to headlines like "Despite being shorthanded, UM too much for PSU" and "Michigan guts out gritty road win."
And before any of you chime in with "Don't read the Detroit papers," my opinion is that Spartan fans are entitled to expect a little more positive coverage from what are essentially our 'local' papers -- especially those of us who are far away from Michigan and don't get any other coverage of our teams.
To achieve great things, two things are needed; a plan, and not quite enough time. -- Leonard Bernstein
Yep, it is disappointing. Used to read his blog every day. Now, I don't even look.
Damn straight. Happened with my roommate and I on a few occasions.
I have fought with all my college roommates... Like punches thrown fighting....
Although I will say that 90% of the time, alcohol was heavily involved.
Wobby Parker has reported that not only was there a fight between teammates on the basketball team but a ski mask wearing Kirk Cousins attacked a MSU hockey player putting a key in his skull, stapling his mouth shut and shouting Nazi racial slurs.
seriously, news flash- "college roommates have a fight". How about focusing on TOM IZZO's 200th BIG 10 WIN?!
I'd much rather have Izzo sit guys for half, leading to douchebag speculation....fracas...police called....possible rape...., than the MSU beat reporter saying what actually happened, and what our HOF coach thinks about it.
Gosh, its not like the pair came out like a man possessed in a career game (Payne) while the other probably brought the most fire he has all season.
Why would any of that be a story line in an otherwise nothing trip to play a bad team who is without their top player.
Same with me, but instead of alcohol, it was Super Smash Brother/Mario Kart/Super Mario Strikers.
