they picked one athlete of all of the "major" sports
laying in the weeds
Not necessarily. Some guys would've been good at whatever sport they chose. Lebron James is physically gifted. He would've been really good in a lot of different sports. Chamberlain, Bo, Brown, and Jackie Robinson were the same way. Lebron and Robinson just happened to specialize professionally. I agree with those that say Jim Thorpe deserves more love on this argument.
I'm gonna have to disagree with you there. Decathletes are just washouts from other track and field events.
I am gravely disappointed. Again you have made me unleash my dogs of war.
It just seems nuts to me that Chamberlain isn't even in the bracket
The contest is "best-athlete" not the "most accomplished or successful". But who is the guy that if we randomly decided to play a sport....who would most likely be the best all-around athlete.
-Bo was a high school decathlon record holder. Actually won a meet without doing the pole vault. Decided to learn it...did so in 1 day and proceeded to break the state record.
-Bo was also an elite NCAA Sprinter, having qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in his 1st 2 years of college. He was a 6.18 sprinter in the 60 yard dash, which is ~ to the fastest footballers of today in Trindon Holliday, Jacoby Ford, Chris Johnson and Marquise Goodwin...the difference is Bo outweighed them all by 40-60 pounds as he played at 225-230 pounds. He did this without training for track.
-Bo actually ran 4.12 in the 40 at the 1986 NFL Combine at the SuperDome...the fastest time ever recorded.
-He could have been an Olympic Gold Medalist in the 100m dash IF he'd concentrated on Track & Field.
-Saw him in the Celebrity Footlocker Slam Dunk Contests in the late 1980s/90s and his vertical was crazy.
-Howie Long said that Bo was a man amongst boys in the NFL.
-I'm an Alabama fan and I thought he was going to score everytime he got the ball in the Iron Bowl games
-Made the 1989 All-Star Game in MLB and then the 1990 NFL Pro Bowl without attending camp as he was still playing baseball.
-You have to be elite to play sports professionally. Super-elite to be an All-Star.......Incomparable to be an All-Star in 2 sports professional at the same time.
IMO.....Bo Jackson was the best, most gifted athlete of all-time.

i only care about spartans --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqsAJQc-NCY
Yeah, not only was Bo a great football player he could actually hit major league pitching which some claim might be the hardest thing to do in sport.
Yeah how many other good MLB hitters were AA level football players..... Bo....Gibby..... who else.?
Exactly. The decathlon is for the guys that aren't good at the paid sports.
Give me flack for this but if not Thorpe then I'll go with Babe Zaharias.
Bo could hit a curveball, - BO
I guess we have to include Dion.
Bo Jackson is the greatest athlete alive for one simple reason...

No Jim Thorpe makes the whole thing a joke.
Hell, the presence of half those people makes the whole thing a joke.
Chamberlain and Thorpe should have been in a bracket but the question is, who would you take out of the tourney so that they could be in it? Earnhardt, Hawk, Allen or Silva?
Tony hawk deserves to be in the list. The shit he can and could did and make look easy is something almost nobody can do. If he were born later in the skating craze he would be doing shit that would blow your mind.
This country was built by people who worked hard then went home and had just a few too many every night. Then went back to work.
Secretariat would destroy them all.
Get off my lawn.
Chamberlain would be a few pedestals below Thorpe. Heck, he couldn't even dominate his own position in his sport because of some guy named Russell.

Who? Oh, you mean the only guy who was able to get into the HOF who never made a tackle in his life? Got it.
yeah, something like that. Guy was a player though. I remember him vs. Rison. That was fun. Also, what the hell was the deal, didn't he play football during the braves playoff run and helicopter the the braves game one night after a football game? That was weird. Look, the guy had his flaws, but face it, anybody who could lock down an NFL 1 receiver at 1 p.m. on a sunday after noon, and face a 98 MPH fast ball on a sunday night isn't a bad athlete.
Bo. because he can do this shit!
Bo Jackson goes 99 yards and takes out a full quarter of game clock in the greatest football video game of all time, Tecmo Super Bowl for the NES.

A man's gotta eat!
I'd take Lebron. He could be an all star at all 5 positions and be an all pro NFL player at multiple positions. Probably would be the greatest WR or TE to ever play the game, he would be unstoppable.
Meh. I didn't care for what he represented: the 'all eyes on me' type of athlete. Jack of all trades, master at none. If anything, he is a perfect example of the reckless spending in pro sports; he made a fortune being a part time player, and not a very good one at that. Kudos to his agent.
