Appling has been named captain according to the Freep. Has Byrd lost his captain status as he should?
Some people are good practice players and others are gamers. Think maxwell and md's refusal to bench him all season.

Keeping the sunshiners in check since 2000.
No, but it is hard to be a Captain if you are not in the playing group. You can't really tell anybody what to do, or not to do on the court and you are not even playing.
Exactly. He needs to do other things to make up for his confidence issues, rather than being an automatic negative/liability for the few minutes he sees the floor.
hoke- to alter or manipulate so as to give a deceptively or superficially improved quality or value.
did you hear about the buddhist that when asked by the hot dog vendor what he wanted, he replied "make me one with everything"
It's hard to be a captain if in a time-out huddle of a tight important road game you are more interested in the beat of the opposing team's pep band than to the coach's strategy for winning.
I agree with this and another earlier post about not paying attention. If you watch his body language on the bench and in huddles, he clearly looks disinterested. He's always looks like he's half paying attention, or just sitting their (literally) biting his fingernails.
To me, he doesn't seem like someone who's there even rooting his team on from the bench.
Worst captain nomination ever...
...Needs to have a permanent seat on the bench.

Mods, please delete if you think it crosses a line but some posters on an IU hoops board are talking about Byrd and one alleges that he has been trying to contact Butler.
Also has a very interesting quote attributed to Izzo that probably shouldn't be posted here...
I doubt Izzo would ever belittle a kid like that. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised to see him transfer at the end of the year. He just is not a B1G caliber player at this point.
Izzo is a tough love dude. Wouldn't surprise me.
It's up to Byrd to decide whether or not he's going to be more than an average D-2 player.
"Tonight, we show the world what this program is made of!" -- Brian Ellerbe on Mar 4, 2000, the night of scUM's 51-point loss to MSU.
Not sure Butler's a fit, though. I'd be surprised if he ends up there.
Anyone. Anyplace. Anytime.
Indiana State or Ball State might be a better fit. Butler is pretty damn good now.
Yep. And they're only going to get better as they get better players.
Butler moving to the A10 was huge.
This is the biggest disappointment of this whole season. He's a captain, and needs to act like it. Even if you're not playing, it doesn't mean you can't help the team.
He wasn't even paying the slightest attention and was just dancing around. Really, really a shame.
Dominating Press Conferences Since 2007
In the pregame interview last night, Izzo said it was actually Byrd who came to him and suggested that Appling take his captaincy because he felt bad that he wasn't contributing and felt maybe he had to work on his game too much to be a leader. Izzo told Byrd, that he is a good leader and there are more ways to lead than just in game performance. But Izzo said that got him thinking and he decided to name Appling a captain sinc he's a leader on the floor already.
Pretty humble of Byrd to do that, but it makes you think he's totally defeated mentally too.
That was weird, you'd think that he would get in ear shot next to the coach at every t.o., so that he can reinforce what the coach has to say at practice and in the lockerroom. You're not playing son, you need to get the aura of leadership from somewhere, bouncing around and looking for the next Lennay Kukua in the oppositions gym isn't going to get you there.
Izzo says Byrd is about 90% healthy and he is not giving up on him. Izzo realizes the fans are not that patient.
Wayne on the IU board is full of bull.

Tough love is in effect here|We won't accept you as you are|Instead, we will show you a vision of what you could be and help you achieve it
If Byrd is this in over his head at 90%, then it's probably not going to work out for him at the high D1 level.
Hopefully something clicks though.
Watch him transfer to Butler and average 16 a game.
