Supposedly chant "how's your grandma" to an NC State player who's grandma had just died. http://www.yardbarker.com/all_sports/articles/msn/nc_state_tyler_lewis_grandmother_just_died_so_duke_fans_chant_hows_your_grandma/12867799 .
Well, that's not very nice.
Pretty hard to hear in the video and make out what they are saying, so I'm guessing it was just a handful of students doing this and not necessarily the entire student section?
Pretty shitty thing to say - even if it was just a few of them. Whoever did it needs a fist to the nose.
I would hope that an Izzoner would get shut up and reprimanded quickly for such a transgression. Some people don't know what to do with freedom of speech.
It was just a mistake;
I didn't mean to let them take away my soul.
Am I too old?
Is it too late?
You can clearly hear "How's your grandma" before he shoots his second FT, so I have to believe that's what they were chanting before his first one as well.
Can you imagine if we(Izzone) chanted that at a UM player? We'd get destroyed by the national media, but Duke somehow gets a pass.
IMO, they chant "Past your bedtime" before the first free throw. And "How's your grandma?" Before the second free throw
No the Cameron Crazies are perfect little prep school angels.
SpartanElement and others.
You posters...you know who you are!
His comments come at 2:20:
I'm not sure it really matters, but it if people hand't told me what to listen for I wouldn't have been able to make out either chant.
If they were chanting something about this kids grandma who just died, that's pretty fucked up.
It's on the front page of MSN.
I can't believe this is the first thread on tRCMB about this topic. Oh, wait.......
I don't know anything about "Yardbarker" but it seems a little tabloidy...
Any chance this story is bullshit?
Are we all sure that his grandma actually exists?
On a serious note, that's extremely messed up.
Your search function joke lacks the necessary wit.
The search function is apparently just as dead as his grandmother.
Hey, did you guys know there are other threads started this morning on this topic too?
Whoa, who are you? A Cameron Crazy?
His grandma must be rolling over in her grave knowing she's being compared to tSearch Function.
The izzone used to be badass like that in the late 90s
Unlike the search function, his grandma really did exist.
The reporters learned their lesson with Manti Te'o and will not mention it until a death certificate or obituary is produced for the alleged late grandmother.
That's f'n terrible. Embarrassing. Even more reason to hate Duke, the Cameron Crazies, and Dick Vitale.
Gotta agree.....small blurb in a crap website like 'yardbarker' isn't exactly national news. Duke's kids are spoiled little shits.....always have been, always will be. Classless little turds one and all. Vitale will still blow them undoubtedly: the beat goes on.
Bump. Story actually made it to Yahoo!
From the blog The Dagger: College Basketball Blog: On Thursday night, Duke avenged an early-season loss to N.C. State with a convincing 98-85 home win. But what happened on the court wasn't the story of the night. Midway through the second half, freshman guard Tyler Lewis stepped to … Continue reading →
Except that the "story" Yahoo! is reporting is that there may not actually be much of a story.
Rick Lewis, Tyler's father, said Friday that he heard the grandmother chant. "It was mostly 'Past your bedtime,' but there was an instant when a brief number of students chanted about Tyler's grandmother," Rick Lewis said Friday. "It wasn't the entire student section, I think a few tried to outdo themselves."
On the other hand, contends Laura Keeley, Duke beat writer for the Raleigh News & Observer, plenty of knowledgeable observers in the building heard nothing of the sort: "[T]he Internet never let a fact get in the way of a story, and people have put out a Youtube video that allegedly supports their claim of a mass cheer," she wrote. "It doesn't because that cheer never happened. I actually asked five other sportswriters if they heard the Grandma cheer. None of them did." (She later backed off the absolutism on Twitter, noting that "if a few dumb people referenced Lewis' Grandma, that's so out of line. But it wasn't a mass organized thing at #Duke.")
Yeah, I can't imagine why mainstream national sports media isn't all over this one.
That's what I hear too, quite clearly. And I don't hear any "past your bedtime" chanting mixed in with "how's your grandma" before the second shot. That's a unified chant coming through loud and clear on the tv broadcast.
Here's a link to the NC State roster showing Tyler Lewis is from Statesville, NC:
Here's a link to the Statesville Record & Landmark showing the obituary of one Margie Lewis who died on Feb 1 and lists a grandson Tyler Lewis of Raleigh, NC (home of NCSU):
It would be an amazing coincidence if that isn't Tyler's grandma and the Duke students weren't chanting "how's your grandma" during their game.
