Just filled mine out. Was brutally honest when it came to gameday atmosphere and stadium appearance. Hopefully somebody important reads these things. (probably not)
I said bathrooms, better nachos, better student cheers, and to not eff with the tailgating experience. Didn't they propose a no alcohol rule in last year's survey? And where did this idea of railings come from? Unnecessary.
Oh... And to fix the sound from the new boards.
or take kid to Build-a-Bear
I wrote in 'www.spartantailgate.com' for where I get my MSU information.
I filled out my survey yesterday. Here were my main concerns:
1) Follow Minny's lead and sell alcohol in the stadium;
2) Dont eff with tailgating;
3) Sound on the North side; and
4) Cell phone service.
I straight up told them I wouldn't renew if they ever implemented a no alcohol rule or screwed up the tailgating experience.
Good call on that one. Perhaps some mobile cell towers. Reception has been terrible these past few years. Not such a big deal during the games themselves, but afterwards and just before, it's a nightmare trying to make a call. Plus, with the phone constantly searching for a signal, sometimes that completely kills the battery.
"People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." - Mark Dantonio.
Just filled in mine. I would love to pour over the results one day.
I talked about bricking the exterior, more video board info, better cell coverage. Here were my key ideas regarding game day experience:
Band: I was a student from 2005-2009 and the band played many more songs. I understand some of the songs have been removed because the students swear in chants along with them - I don't care. If you're taking a young one to a game, you should expect to hear 'naughty words' given the intoxication level of fans. Moreover, any piece of song, besides the Alma Matter and the Fight Song, can be made to have swear words. Rather than cut off what our band does, so that we only play the same 2 or 3 pieces of music, having Coach D, Izzo, Merchant, and Anastos get on the video board and tell the students to stop swearing in chants. It will stop them in their tracks.
Moreover, another negative side effect is that hearing the fight song 30 times a game is tiresome. Even as someone that sings the fight song X 2 (plus breakstrain), and alma matter in the shower every day, it gets tiresome. By opening up the band's music books, you can get the crowd involved without having to resort to canned music. This is especially important as the pageantry of bands versus the absence of canned music is one of the big things that separate college football from pro.
Video Boards: The Boards look great. I love the font / graphics package for team names, dates, and EL, MI. However, it is too small to be seen in the North Endzone. I wish there were less advertisements - I understand they pay the bills, but stats are hardly ever up. Moreover, perhaps at media timeouts, Out of Town scores could be shown on one side of the main board, or on one of the smaller boards. There is no reason why both of the smaller video boards need to show the same thing at all times. A little diversity would be welcome.
Finally, the LED ribbon could be used less to promote Auto Owners, and more to get the crowd involved on key defensive plays. Even something as simple as strobbing the light could cause false starts and miscommunication.
Student Section: I love the student section, having been it in for 4 years. However, there are a few things that could be done to make it better Quit having the ushers crowd kids in so much. Not only does it create an uncomfortable situation, but a potentially dangerous (when police and EMTs have to enter the section) situation as well. Less importantly, but better seen, it makes the student section look under capacity all the time. Even if ushers crowd 5% extra, that means there will be 800 empty seats. Let the students spread out, so they look at capacity.
I would also recommend moving the overflow section of the upper deck from the student section. Students by and large do not want to sit there, and that adds to the attendance visual issue problems. If the students were given low donor seats (South Endzone), it would allow the upper deck to be opened up for public purchase.
Students should get pom poms (NOT TOWELS) every game. It creates an intimidating atmosphere, and a great visual aesthetic as perfected by SEC schools and Penn State. Towels, however, do not, and often lead to people whipping the towels at each other. There should be recycle centers (Because we GO GREEN), where students MAY return the poms after each game, or they may keep them.
Alumni Student Section: This has been an idea tossed around by myself, my friends, and on numerous MSU fan websites. I understand that there are a great majority of people who don't want to stand the entire game, or be subjected to nearby fans' standing, chanting, and singing. That being said, rather than catering to the whims of the lowest common denominator, hampering game atmosphere, and home field advantage, there's an alternative that could bolster game atmosphere, MSU branding, and revenue - creating a 'student section' for older fans.
Essentially, it would operate like the normal student section. For a premium over normal tickets, interested fans would be given a section where they can stand without fear of reprisal from other fans, and sing, chant, and do hand motions along with the student section. Included in the premium would be a t-shirt. This would help on numerous fronts. The noise level (a key component of home field advantage) would be increased. This would help a game day atmosphere - the Izzone Alumni game is endlessly entertaining seeing late 20s and 30s 'kids' acting just like they did in college; the same would apply to the Alumni student section idea. It would help MSU branding - as far as I know, no other college in the country has an alumni student section. It would help MSU, and Mark Hollis', appearance to the media and public as the forefront of creative ways to enhance game atmosphere. It would help revenue, as a premium could be charged over otherwise less desirable seats (upper deck, direct end zone, etc.) Finally, and most importantly, there is a demand for it. Perhaps institute it at a trial level, or send out surveys to season ticket holders (or calls, etc.) to determine if, and how many, season ticket holders would be interested in this.
I have said online at MSU fan sites, that if the AD does not operate this, I would be willing to try to run it from a grassroots perspective - however, there is little doubt in my mind that by running it through the AD, with the correct corporate sponsors, it would be a smash hit. Think about it - "The Forever Student section, brought to you by ESPNU - Never Graduate."
More bathrooms, fewer Roushars.
Dominating Press Conferences Since 2007
Finished mine recently. I mentioned 'Dan Roushar' as a reason that I missed games this season, and also said that they needed to finally break ground on the giant Sparty statue to replace the smokestack.
Also mentioned cell phone service and not effing with tailgating.
tRCMB - Visit at your own risk of being disgusted.
Finished mine the other day
-My main concern was making a rule to not allow the rival teams colors in the student section. Oh you bought a ticket and are wearing something other then MSU? Thats nice but you have to leave. I find this appalling when I try and watch the game in the student section and I am surrounded by rival fans. This would be an amazing rule and new touch to homefield advantage. I dont care how rude it seems around the nation, that is our student section and making it hostile and filing it with real students who love MSU is what will bring it back.
- I also told them to turn up the fucking score board so that my ears bled. We have one of the biggest scoreboards in the nation and I want it to be heard around the city. Also more stats and replays please.
-Dont mess with tailgating and have the lots open when people first show up
- Cell phone service
-Having a system for students to see if your id is getting scanned and if youre selling out to rival fans. Make you earn better seats. Even increase the ticket price for real fans and sort out the losers.
- And for everyone else I mentioned the bathrooms

To die in ann arbor is redundant
Obvious push poll is obvious. Without remembering every question, it was obvious they were hoping to get certain results regarding the student section, band vs. canned music, renumbering seats and sections, and adding railings to aisles.
Cue follow up "You asked for it, now we need you to help pay for it..." email.
